En effet, certains patients ne supportent pas la base dure résine en raison de la fragilité de la surface d'appui, de la résorption osseuse excessive ou encore de la présence de contre dépouilles. Les implants et la chirurgie préprothétique constituent des solutions efficaces pour améliorer l'équilibre de la prothèse et son intégration. Cependant, il est à noter que certains patients ne sont pas éligibles à la chirurgie implantaire et préprothétique pour des raisons médicales, psychologiques ou financières. Le recours aux bases souples permet d'améliorer le confort et la qualité de vie de ces patients. Bien que les bases souples soient plus confortables et plus performantes sur le plan fonctionnel, leur usage demeure limité dans le temps en raison du durcissement, du décollement et de la colonisation microbienne des matériaux souples. La mise en condition tissulaire est une autre approche qui a été développée pour permettre la restauration tissulaire d'une muqueuse altérée par le port de prothèse inadaptée. Elle permet aussi, grâce à la réfection de la base prothétique, d'obtenir une nouvelle prothèse répondant de façon optimale aux impératifs de sustentation, de stabilisation et de rétention.

Georges Minois paints a vast fresco, starting with the first old man to relate his own story—an Egyptian scribe some 4500 years ago—and ending with the deaths of Elizabeth I and Henry IV in the sixteenth century.
