Laissant de côté les concepts de noblesse on d’aristocratie, il adopte celui d’élites, emprunté à la sociologie, et braque ainsi le projecteur sur tous ceux qui d’une manière ou d’une autre exercent, dans leur champ, un pouvoir social lié à l’excellence, que ce soit celle de la naissance et du sang, on celle de la capacité, dans une activité quelconque, à se distinguer et à en tirer prestige, richesse ou honneur, celle du savoir enfin. Il prend donc en compte les élites du royaume autant que celle du village, les ecclésiastiques comme les laïcs. Reprenant l’idée de circulation des élites, il recherche les processus qui ont permis aux élites de survivre aux crises et de continuer d’asseoir leur domination quand le changement est si fort qu’il affecte l’ensemble de la société. L’enquête a été conduite sur la longue durée, depuis la fin du monde antique jusqu’au XI e siecle, et dans diverses régions (Espagne, France, Allemagne, Italie). Elle s’est attachée à des moments particuliers de mutation, à des types de crises, à des groupes d’élites en difficulté, à des familles qui ont connu une ascension rapide avant de s’effacer lentement... Les crises ont exacerbé la compétition sociale, elles ont aussi accéleré la mobilité et le renouvellement des élites. Indubitablement, les élites out survécu aux crises en tant que groupes dominants, mais assurément, dans la durée, elles ne se composaient ni des mêmes groupes, ni des mêmes familles.

Book excerpt: How elite Roman families used genealogy, architecture, and the urban fabric to appropriate the city’s saints for their own Domesticating Saints in Medieval and Early Modern Rome explores the creative efforts of some of Rome’s most prominent noble families to weave themselves into Rome’s Christian past. Maya Maskarinec shows how, from late antiquity to early modernity, elite Roman families used genealogy, architecture, and the urban fabric to appropriate the city’s saints for their own, eventually claiming them as ancestors. Over the course of the Middle Ages, there developed a pronounced sense that churches and their saints belonged to specific regions, neighborhoods, and even families. These associations, coupled with a resurgent interest in Rome’s Christian antiquity as well as in noble lineages, enabled Roman families to “domesticate” the city’s saints and dominate the urban landscape and its politics into the early modern era. These families cultivated saintly genealogies and saintly topologies (exploiting, for example, the increasingly prolific identification of churches as the former residences of early Christian and late antique saints), cementing presumed connections between place, descent, and moral worth. Drawing from sources spanning the fourth to the late sixteenth century, Maskarinec brings into conversation saints’ lives, documentary evidence, family genealogies, monumental and domestic architecture, and medieval and early modern guidebooks, sources not often studied together. Bridging the divide between secular and sacred histories of Rome, Domesticating Saints in Medieval and Early Modern Rome repositions these materials within a new story, of how Romans made the city’s classical and Christian past their own and thereby empowered and immortalized their families.

This was a new form of rural monasticism, which suited the needs and aspirations of a Christian elite eager to express its power and prestige in religious terms. Contrary to earlier studies, which viewed Columbanus and his disciples primarily as religious innovators, this book focuses on the political, economic, and familial implications of monastic patronage and on the benefits elite patrons stood to reap. While founding families were in a privileged position to court royal favour, monastic patronage also exposed them to violent reprisals from competing factions. Columbanian monasteries were not serene havens of contemplation, but rather active foci of power and wealth, and quickly became integral elements of early medieval statecraft.
