Book From Plantation to Paradise

Download or read book From Plantation to Paradise written by David M. Powers and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1764 the first printing press was established in the French Caribbean colonies, launching the official documentation of operas and plays performed there, and marking the inauguration of the first theatre in the colonies. A rigorous study of pre–French Revolution performance practices in Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), Powers’s book examines the elaborate system of social casting in these colonies; the environments in which nonwhite artists emerged; and both negative and positive contributions of the Catholic Church and the military to operas and concerts produced in the colonies. The author also explores the level of participation of nonwhites in these productions, as well as theatre architecture, décor, repertoire, seating arrangements, and types of audiences. The status of nonwhite artists in colonial society; the range of operas in which they performed; their accomplishments, praise, criticism; and the use of créole texts and white actors/singers à visage noirs (with blackened faces) present a clear picture of French operatic culture in these colonies. Approaching the French Revolution, the study concludes with an examination of the ways in which colonial opera was affected by slave uprisings, the French Revolution, the emergence of “patriotic theatres,” and their role in fostering support for the king, as well as the impact on subsequent operas produced in the colonies and in the United States.

Book Public Theatre and the Enslaved People of Colonial Saint Domingue

Download or read book Public Theatre and the Enslaved People of Colonial Saint Domingue written by Julia Prest and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-13 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) was home to one of the richest public theatre traditions of the colonial-era Caribbean. This book examines the relationship between public theatre and the enslaved people of Saint-Domingue—something that is generally given short shrift owing to a perceived lack of documentation. Here, a range of materials and methodologies are used to explore pressing questions including the ‘mitigated spectatorship’ of the enslaved, portrayals of enslaved people in French and Creole repertoire, the contributions of enslaved people to theatre-making, and shifting attitudes during the revolutionary era. The book demonstrates that slavery was no mere backdrop to this portion of theatre history but an integral part of its story. It also helps recover the hidden experiences of some of the enslaved individuals who became entangled in that story.

Book Les Veuves cr oles com die

Download or read book Les Veuves cr oles com die written by Julia Prest and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Les Veuves créoles is the first play known to have been composed in Martinique. This three-act prose comedy was published anonymously in Paris in 1768 and was performed at least twice in the capital of Caribbean theatre, Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) during the colonial period. Set in colonial Martinique in the port town of Saint-Pierre, Les Veuves créoles represents an early example of créole francophone drama. Three créole widows are courted by the grasping and dishonest Fatincourt who, after six years on the island, is keen to marry in order to repay his debts and return to France. The two older widows run successful businesses – a fact that, for Fatincourt, renders them eligible despite their advanced years. The third widow is younger but is portrayed as foolish for believing herself superior to other créoles thanks to a short visit she has made to France. The older widows eventually unite in order to thwart Fatincourt, and it is metropolitan France that emerges as the principal source of wrong-doing in this lively play. Contemporary reviewers in the Parisian press were uncertain how to respond to the play’s créole slant, but acknowledged its comic and theatrical merits. It is hoped that both elements will be of interest today. p.p1 {margin: 3.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify; font: 12.0px 'Adobe Garamond Pro'}

Book French Visual Culture and the Making of Medieval Theater

Download or read book French Visual Culture and the Making of Medieval Theater written by Laura Weigert and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revives what was unique, strange and exciting about the variety of performances that took place in the realms of the French kings and Burgundian dukes. Laura Weigert brings together a wealth of visual artifacts and practices to explore this tradition of late medieval performance located not in 'theaters' but in churches, courts, and city streets and squares. By stressing the theatricality rather than the realism of fifteenth-century visual culture and the spectacular rather than the devotional nature of its effects, she offers a new way of thinking about late medieval representation and spectatorship. She shows how images that ostensibly document medieval performance instead revise its characteristic features to conform to a playgoing experience that was associated with classical antiquity. This retrospective vision of the late medieval performance tradition contributed to its demise in sixteenth-century France and promoted assumptions about medieval theater that continue to inform the contemporary disciplines of art and theater history.
