Book Ceremonial Entries Municipal Liberties and the Negotiation of Power in Valois France 1328 1589

Download or read book Ceremonial Entries Municipal Liberties and the Negotiation of Power in Valois France 1328 1589 written by Neil Murphy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a fresh examination of the French ceremonial entry, Neil Murphy considers the role these events played in the negotiation between urban elites and the Valois monarchy for rights and liberties. Moving away from the customary focus on the pageantry, this book focuses on how urban governments used these ceremonies to offer the ruler (or his representatives) petitions regarding their rights, liberties and customs. Drawing on extensive research, he shows that ceremonial entries lay at the heart of how the state functioned in later medieval and Renaissance France.

Download or read book Fran ois Blondel written by Anthony Gerbino and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First director of the Académie royale d’architecture, François Blondel established a lasting model for architectural education that helped transform a still largely medieval profession into the one we recognize today. Most well known for his 1676 urban plan of Paris, Blondel is also celebrated as a mathematician, scientist, and scholar. Few figures are more representative of the close affinity between architecture and the "new science" of the seventeenth century. The first full-length study in English to appear on this polymath, this book adds to the scholarship on early modern architectural history and particularly on French classicism under Louis XIV and his minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert. It studies early modern science and technology, Baroque court culture, and the development of the discipline of architecture.

Book Ruling the Waves

Download or read book Ruling the Waves written by Harald Kleinschmidt and published by Bibliotheca Humanistica & Refo. This book was released on 2008 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work Kleinschmidt is tracing the political implications of the transformation of the European world picture in the age of Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519). It is relevant for Renaissance political and cultural history. At closer inspection Maximilian turns out to have been a crucial though much underestimated figure in the context of the changes of the world picture during his time. Not only was he continuously and persistently involved in activities through which these changes were provoked. He also issued and authorized the most comprehensive sources relevant to the impact that the changes of the world picture had on politics and international relations. This work describes the exploration travels around the world, ordered by Maximilian, among which were the Portuguese expeditions to Ethiopia and India. The study proceeds chronologically in three parts, describing first (A) in brief the aspects of the emerging structure of territorial rule, concepts of universalism attached to the Roman Empire and the world picture during the Middle Ages, followed by part B which examines the changes of the world picture and Maximilian`s role (the Portuguese and Spanish Expeditions) in it. The last section (C) surveys the emerging of the new world order, the transformation of the Roman Empire as an institution of universal rule and the consolidation of territorial politics during the first half of the sixteenth century. (Bibliotheca Humanistica & Reformatorica, Vol. LXIII). 29 black and white illustrations.
