S’ils ont tenu à souligner que la réconciliation, la justice et la paix sont des dons de Dieu, qu’elles s’enracinent dans les cœurs et exigent une conversion permanente, ils ont rappelé vigoureusement que le continent a besoin de chrétiens qui prennent à bras-le-corps l’éducation et la formation, et développer les commissions Justice et Paix. « L’avenir de l’Afrique, écrit Paulin Poucouta, passe par la consolidation d’un homme africain nouveau. Il a besoin de chrétiens prophétiquement libres par rapport aux puissances d’argent et aux intrigues politiques et religieuses, libres aussi des tribalismes, du régionalisme et des nationalismes ambiants. Dans des sociétés longtemps marquées par la pensée unique des monodanspartismes, il convient de rappeler l’importance de la pensée dans la transformation de la société ». C’est pourquoi les Églises doivent susciter des espaces non seulement d’apprentissage, mais aussi de prise de parole et de recherche. Ce livre nous restitue les leçons du second synode tenu à Rome en 2009. Aboutissement d’un travail collectif regroupant des chercheurs originaires de différents pays d’Afrique, il est publié sous la direction d’Henri Derroitte et de François Yumba.

Si les orientations générales données à ce second synode stigmatisent d'un certain ordre économique imposé aux pays africains, l'accent est mis également sur la responsabilité des Africains eux-mêmes dans la conduite de leurs propres affaires. Lorsque est dénoncé, comme un scandale qui sème la mort, le trafic des armes, lorsque sont pointées les tensions sociales qui bloquent le progrès, en donnant naissance à des troubles politiques et à des conflits armés, on ne peut que mieux vérifier l'importance et l'urgence de la recherche de la paix. Parmi les éléments fondamentaux de l'enseignement social de l'Eglise, sont rappelées particulièrement des valeurs comme le sens du bien commun, la bonne gouvernance et l'option préférentielle pour les pauvres. En situant ainsi le social et le politique au coeur même des orientations du Synode, ce dernier veut mobiliser les chrétiens à s'engager plus activement dans la transformation de leurs sociétés. Joseph-Marie Ndi-Okalla, African Representative de l'Association internationale des missiologues catholiques, est directeur des Études au grand séminaire de Yaoundé et enseignant à l'Université catholique d'Afrique centrale (Cameroun). Il est directeur de cet ouvrage.
