Book Making Higher Education Christian

Download or read book Making Higher Education Christian written by Joel A. Carpenter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes stock of an important but often hidden aspect of American Protestant evangelicalism: its efforts in higher education. The many liberal arts colleges, graduate theological seminaries, and Bible colleges nationwide that serve evangelical traditions and movements have remained nearly invisible to the academic establishment until recently. The essays presented here reflect a maturing community of scholarship focused on the unfinished business of developing a thoroughly Christian approach to contemporary higher education. They offer new theoretical perspectives on the aims and bases of educating, candid assessments of shortcomings in evangelical scholarship, and concrete suggestion for effective approaches to contemporary problems.

Book Anglo Latin Literature 600 899

Download or read book Anglo Latin Literature 600 899 written by Michael Lapidge and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latin literature of Anglo-Saxon England remains poorly understood. No bibliography of the subject exists. No comprehensive and authoritative history of Anglo-Latin literature has ever been written. It is only in recent years, largely through the essays collected in the present volumes, that the outline and intrinsic interest of the field have been clarified. Indeed, until a comprehensive history of the period is written, these collected essays offer the only reliable guide to the subject. The essays in the first volume are concerned with the earliest period of literary activity in England. Following a general essay which surveys the field as a whole, the essays range from the arrival of Theodore and Hadrian, through Aldhelm and Bede, to Aediluulf.

Book Schools and Schooling in Late Medieval Germany

Download or read book Schools and Schooling in Late Medieval Germany written by David Sheffler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have traditionally studied late medieval education backward – through the eyes of religious and political reformers critical of that which preceded them. This has led to significant distortions. Histories written from this perspective, tend to overemphasize the novelty of early modern educational reforms at the expense of evident continuities, and focus on conflict between ecclesiastical and lay authorities rather than cooperation. This book focuses instead, on the medieval experience of education through a detailed reconstruction of the educational landscape of late medieval Regensburg. The resulting picture provides new insights into the relationship between civic authorities and ecclesiastical institutions, the role of education in social and economic mobility, and the connections between local communities and broader European educational structures.

Book Women Readers and the Ideology of Gender in Old French Verse Romance

Download or read book Women Readers and the Ideology of Gender in Old French Verse Romance written by Roberta L. Krueger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-17 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study challenges the view that all courtly literature promoted the social status of women. Unlike previous books which focused on knights, it starts from the perspective of the woman reader/listener. Using reader-response theory, feminist criticism and recent historical studies, it suggests that romances taught gender roles, often inviting readers to criticise and resist them.

Book Ordering Chaos

Download or read book Ordering Chaos written by Bridget K. Balint and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From c. 1100 until c. 1170, Latin prosimetrical texts characterized by dialogue, allegory, and philosophical speculation enjoyed a notable popularity within the cultural ambit of the French cathedral schools. Inspired by Boethiusa (TM) "Consolation of Philosophy," the prosimetrum writers applied his literary techniques to the ethical and anthropological concerns of their own era, producing texts of great artistry in the process. This book investigates the rise of the Boethian impulse in Latin, the innovations of the twelfth-century writers, the difficulties that arose when they attempted to recapture the certainty that characterized the "Consolation," and the survival of aspects of this literary mode in later Latin and vernacular literature.

Book excerpt: The period covered is marked by several turning-points, such as the spread of iron technology, the introduction of innovative irrigation systems and the development of new forms of urbanization. In China, India and the Mediterranean, in Central America and in parts of South America, the so-called 'Classical cultures' rose. For the first time, science attempted to develop independently of myth and religion, as a new method to explain nature and human destiny. But this period also witnessed the rise of universal religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and, in the seventh century, Islam.

Book De temporum ratione

Download or read book De temporum ratione written by Nadja Germann and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the scientific interests and rationality which find expression in the quadrivial sources of the 9th to 11th centuries, arguing on this basis for the existence of a 'discovery of nature' already prior to the 12th century. It focuses on the theme of 'time', exemplified by Abbo of Fleury's Computus, as well as Hermann of Reichenau's Epistola de quantitate mensis lunaris, Abbreviatio compoti and Prognostica. The systematic and historical background of the study is established through analysis of Alcuin's De vera philosophia, Bede's De temporum ratione and the computistic-astronomical anthologies which were the predominant genre during this period. The volume is complemented by fourteen illustrations and an appendix including Hermann's heretofore unedited texts, the Abbreviatio compoti and Prognostica.
