Download or read book The Guardians in Action written by William H. F. Altman and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you’ve ever wondered why Plato staged Timaeus as a kind of sequel to Republic, or who its unnamed missing fourth might be; or why he joined Critias to Timaeus, and whether or not that strange dialogue is unfinished; or what we should make of the written critique of writing in Phaedrus, and of that dialogue’s apparent lack of unity; or what is the purpose of the long discussion of the One in the second half of Parmenides, and how it relates to the objections made to the Theory of Forms in its first half; or if the revisionists or unitarians are right about Philebus, and why its Socrates seems less charming than usual, or whether or not Cratylus takes place after Euthyphro, and whether its far-fetched etymologies accomplish any serious philosophical purpose; or why the philosopher Socrates describes in the central digression of Theaetetus is so different from Socrates himself; then you will enjoy reading the continuation of William H. F. Altman’s Plato the Teacher: The Crisis of the Republic (Lexington; 2012), where he considers the pedagogical connections behind “the post-Republic dialogues” from Timaeus to Theaetetus in the context of “the Reading Order of Plato’s dialogues.”

Book Platonic Patterns

    Book Details:
  • Author : Holger Thesleff
  • Publisher : Parmenides Publishing
  • Release : 2009-04-07
  • ISBN : 1930972598
  • Pages : 537 pages

Download or read book Platonic Patterns written by Holger Thesleff and published by Parmenides Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04-07 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Platonic Patterns is a reprint collection of many of Holger Thesleff's studies in Plato-spanning from 1967 to 2003. It includes three books, four articles and a new introduction by the author, which sets the general outline of his interpretation of Plato. Whereas much of the scholarship on Plato has tended to operate within the frame of one language and/or a single school of thought, Thesleff constructively combines several discoveries and theories (philosophical, philological and historical) of various scholars with his own research, focusing on how Plato can be understood in his own context. The work represents small but significant breakthroughs in research on Plato from an internationally inclusive standpoint. Having previously been published mainly in Finland by scholarly societies, availability outside the Nordic countries has, up until now, been minimal.Thesleff employs his singular expertise of Greek language and literature to make innovative contributions to the study and interpretation of Plato. He thematically stresses the significance of the less overt elements found in Plato's dialogues, such as Plato's use of humor and his linguistic expression, while taking into account the chronology and/or the intended audience.

Book The Rational Enterprise

Download or read book The Rational Enterprise written by Rosemary Desjardins and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Desjardins' conclusion, that the Theaetetus really does point to a particular theory of knowledge, certainly will be controversial, since for many people the idea that the Theaetetus fails to define knowledge is the cornerstone of their interpretation of Plato's later philosophical thought. But whatever one thinks about the conclusion, it must be agreed that the manner in which it is defended is intrinsically important. Desjardins starts from the unassailable premise that the dialogues are internally unified, and that everything in the dialogues is there for a reason. Her method, then, is to show how some of the features of the dialogue that are usually not taken very seriously actually are very important. Of course, she is not the only scholar taking this sort of tack, but what she makes of the various elements of the Theaetetus is a most impressive construction.

Book Plato and the Good

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rosemary Desjardins
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2003-12-01
  • ISBN : 9047412362
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Plato and the Good written by Rosemary Desjardins and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an original interpretation of Plato’s enigmatic statements about the idea of the Good. Desjardins starts by reconciling two notoriously difficult and different accounts of the dialectical method found in the Philebus and The Republic. She then shows how they are connected to the four forms of god-given mania in the Phaedrus. Desjardins links god-given mania and the dialectical method to the concept of piety in the Euthyphro and to Plato’s defense of Socrates’ piety in the Apology. Desjardins’ interpretation of the idea of the Good that is presented by Plato in words (logoi) and through dramatic action (erga) is compelling and will inspire everyone interested in Plato’s dialogues and the idea of the Good.
