Download or read book Aldosterone Mineralocorticoid Receptor written by Brian Harvey and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an open access dissemination of the EU COST Action ADMIRE in Aldosterone/Mineralocorticoid Receptor (MR) physiology and pathophysiology. Aldosterone is the major hormone regulating blood pressure. Alterations in blood levels of aldosterone and genetic mutations in the MR receptor are major causes of hypertension and comorbidities. Many of the drugs in clinical use, and in development for treating hypertension, target aldosterone and MR actions in the kidney and cardiovascular system. The ADMIRE book assembles review chapters from 16 European ADMIRE laboratories providing the latest insights into mechanisms of aldosterone synthesis/secretion, aldosterone/MR physiology and signaling, and the pathophysiological roles of aldosterone/MR activation.
Download or read book The Pathophysiology and Pharmacotherapy of Myocardial Infarction written by Nabil El-Sherif and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pathophysiology and Pharmacotherapy of Myocardial Infarction deals with the advances in the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of acute myocardial infarction and related complications. This book covers two major consequences—cardiac muscle dysfunction and cardiac electrical dysfunction. This text begins by reviewing the controversy surrounding the pathogenetic mechanisms of atheroma formation and its potential reversibility, including the status of coronary risk factors and benefits of primary prevention. The pathophysiologic mechanisms of pump failure and the current approach to its management are then deliberated, followed by a discussion on the rational use of vasodilators in post-infarction heart failure and pharmacotherapy of cardiogenic shock. The rationale for the interest in the role of coronary vasospasm and thrombolytic therapy for acute myocardial infarction is also covered. This publication concludes by reviewing the approaches for the management of post-infarction ventricular tachyarrhythmias and concept of secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death. This compilation is valuable to medical students, primary care physicians, and cardiovascular specialists.

Download or read book Hyperuricemic Syndromes written by Claudio Ronco and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uric acid disorders are involved in both nephrological and hematological diseases. One of these crystal-associated diseases which has been known since antiquity is gout. More recently, tumor Lysis syndromes have been identified which affect patients with cancer, especially in the phase of cellular destruction after chemotherapy. The detection of these hyperuricemic syndromes, together with the improved understanding of urate handling by the kidney, have spurred new interest in the pathophysiology of hyperuricemic states, their clinical consequences and management. Moreover, the recent development of a recombinant form of urate oxidase transforming uric acid into allantoin (Rasburicase) has caused new interest in the pathophysiology of hyperuricemia and the potential applications of this new drug. The multidisciplinary approach of this book offers new insights into the metabolic syndromes in question by uniting authors from the fields of biochemistry, pharmacology, rheumatology, onco-hematology, and nephrology. The result is a compendium of the present knowledge in the field, which will also be very useful as a reference tool for professionals and students who want to expand their knowledge on this topic.

Download or read book Historical Aspects of Pediatric Surgery written by P. P. Rickham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first sight it may appear strange that a volume of Progress in Pediatric Surgery should be devoted to the history of our specialty. One assumes that progress is concerned primarily with recent developments whilst history deals with matters of the past. However, in the past there has also been considerable progress in the development of our understand ing of paediatric surgical problems, otherwise we would not have pro gressed to our present achievements. The editors, therefore, do not apologize for compiling this volume but, on the contrary, feel that the publication of this volume is most timely. Modern paediatric surgery has now been practised for three genera tions. The handful of pioneers who were the founders of our specialty worked mainly before the last world war. A few dozen of the inter mediary generation started work immediately after the war, while the new generation who are now dominating our specialty must be counted in thousands. Two factors have radically altered paediatric surgery as practised by the intermediary and the present generation of surgeons.
