Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a graduate student residence at Oxford University in the early 1990s, Kevin, an Irish Montrealer, meets Leon, a London Jew from a Communist family, and Alex, a Soviet defector’s son brought up in Toronto. When Alex begins to tutor a charming yet troubled upper-class English undergraduate, the dynamics in their conflicted three-way friendship culminate in Kevin and Leon playing a prank on Alex. The act’s disastrous outcome binds the three young men together emotionally even as it dispatches them on separate courses through the 1990s. Ranging from a precisely and ironically evoked Oxford, which parodies that of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited, to post-Referendum Montreal, war-ravaged former Yugoslavia, London, Moscow, Poland and Berlin, The World of After depicts the 1990s as an interlude of freedom and confused but enriching self-discovery between the rigidity of the Cold War and the stark divisions of the post-September 11, 2001 world. Kevin struggles to find love, recover a friendship he has betrayed and chart a world he no longer understands as Leon dodges his past and Alex descends into a criminal culture that leads to a confrontation with his own values.

Download or read book The Turbulent Tide written by Ruth Wildes Schuler and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-09-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Turbulent Tide centers around the story of Katrina, who is orphaned at eight years old, and is taken to live with an aunt and uncle that she has never met. She finds that her aunt and cousins do not want her, and she flees into the surrounding woods where she meets a young peasant boy who befriends her. He explains though that they can never be friends. However, a bond is formed that lasts through the years. The novel shows the contrast of the luxurious life style of the aristocracy and the hard laboring existence of the peasants. As Katrina matures, three men fall in love with her -- the peasant boy of her childhood, a handsome wealthy young aristocrat, and a monk. She is torn between these men of very different backgrounds. The First World War erupts and both the peasant and aristocrat go off to war, but when the revolution explodes, the two men join on opposite sides of the fight. Katie is force to flee across the Soviet Union to escape the dreaded Cheka who is exterminating the aristocracy. She contracts typhus and her life is saved by the young monk. Eventually she is betrayed by a loved one and ends up behind the prison walls of the secret police, but is eventually rescued by a loved one. Woven around the fictional characters are the stories of the Russian Royal family, their deaths and their secret burial, and also the assassination of the dreaded monk, Rasputin, and the digging up of his remains and the secret hiding them where they would never to be found. There is the story of the wild orphans who ran across the landscape, pilfering and committing violence of those in their way, the hooligans that walked on stilts and dressed themselves in glittering paint to frighten and rob the helpless in the streets. All the characters in the book had their lives turned up side down by the turbulent tide that swept across Russia. Some did not survive it, but others eventually picked up their lives once the previous barriers of class, wealth, and the differences in religion and political beliefs were swept away, allowing the characters to be free to claim their chance for survival and love.

Book The Five Acts of Diego Leon

Download or read book The Five Acts of Diego Leon written by Alex Espinoza and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed author Alex Espinoza, whose writing Lisa See has called “fresh, magical, beautiful, and evocative,” returns with a captivating, unforgettable novel set in Hollywood’s Golden Age, as a gifted and determined young man leaves Mexico—and everything he’s ever known—to follow his dreams. Growing up in a rural village at the height of the Mexican Revolution, Diego León has many first loves: singing, dancing, and hearing the stories of his ancestors, the P’urhépecha. But when tragedy strikes, young Diego is sent to the city to live with his aristocratic grandparents, who insist he forget his roots and groom him to take over the family business. Under pressure to enter a profession—and a life—he cares nothing for, and haunted by the violence once again erupting all around him, Diego flees his war-torn country to forge his own destiny. Diego arrives in Hollywood in 1927, when silent films are giving way to talkies, Prohibition is in full swing, and “Latin lover” types are sought out even as they are looked down upon. Working his way up in the movie business with talent and ingenuity, Diego soon figures out that getting one’s face on the silver screen has as much to do with what goes on behind the camera as what goes on in front of it. But the closer Diego comes to stardom, the more he finds that the past is not so easily escaped, as he is drawn again and again to the painful legacy of history and the wounds of his homeland. A sweeping, sensual novel of love, ambition, and identity, The Five Acts of Diego León bears all the marks of a classic Hollywood story: romance, betrayal, glamour, and an underdog hero to root for till the end. “An elegant, startling vision of a Mexican in America, The Five Acts of Diego León proclaims the ascendance of a unique new talent, Alex Espinoza—a Chicano in America certain to surpass the fame of his novel’s silent Hollywood hero. Espinoza takes our literature from a mute, black-and-white era to a national stage with full-spectrum color, in high-tech surround sound.”—Dagoberto Gilb, author of Before the End, After the Beginning

Book Greek Epigram from the Hellenistic to the Early Byzantine Era

Download or read book Greek Epigram from the Hellenistic to the Early Byzantine Era written by Maria Kanellou and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek epigram is a remarkable poetic form. The briefest of all ancient Greek genres, it is also the most resilient: for almost a thousand years it attracted some of the finest Greek poetic talents as well as exerting a profound influence on Latin literature, and it continues to inspire and influence modern translations and imitations. After a long period of neglect, research on epigram has surged during recent decades, and this volume draws on the fruits of that renewed scholarly engagement. It is concerned not with the work of individual authors or anthologies, but with the complexities of epigram as a genre, and provides a selection of in-depth treatments of key aspects of Greek literary epigram of the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Byzantine periods. Individual chapters offer insights into a variety of topics, from the dynamic interactions between poets and their predecessors and contemporaries, and the relationship between epigram and its sociopolitical, cultural, and literary background from the third century BCE up until the sixth century CE, to its interaction with its origins, inscribed epigram more generally, other literary genres, the visual arts, and Latin poetry, as well as the process of editing and compilation that generated the collections that survived into the modern world. Through the medium of individual studies the volume as a whole seeks to offer a sense of this vibrant and dynamic poetic form and its world, which will be of value to scholars and students of Greek epigram and classical literature more broadly.

Book Philitas of Cos

Download or read book Philitas of Cos written by Konstantinos Spanoudakis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an edition of the poetical and grammatical fragments of Philitas of Cos, the early-Hellenistic scholar and poet who served as an exemplary model for the great Alexandrian poets. His output includes frivolous Hermes and Demeter which both had fundamental impact on later metapoetic imagery, and the Ataktoi Glossai, a glossary interpreting mainly Homeric idiom in pre-Aristarchean fashion. The body of the book consists of an Introduction discussing life, literary affiliations and metre; an edition of testimonies and fragments along with a commentary elucidating matters of language and influence on the scholar-poets, Propertius and Longus. The study of Philitas is brought up to date with new testimonies and new neglected sources for the fragments. Recent papyrological findings, verse inscriptions, lexicographic sources and inscriptions from Cos are taken into consideration. Passages dubiously ascribed to Philitas are discussed. The book closes with three Appendices and comprehensive Indexes.
