Book Tocqueville s Discovery of America

Download or read book Tocqueville s Discovery of America written by Leo Damrosch and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2010-04-07 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexis de Tocqueville is more quoted than read; commentators across the political spectrum invoke him as an oracle who defined America and its democracy for all times. But in fact his masterpiece, Democracy in America, was the product of a young man's open-minded experience of America at a time of rapid change. In Tocqueville's Discovery of America, the prizewinning biographer Leo Damrosch retraces Tocqueville's nine-month journey through the young nation in 1831–1832, illuminating how his enduring ideas were born of imaginative interchange with America and Americans, and painting a vivid picture of Jacksonian America. Damrosch shows that Tocqueville found much to admire in the dynamism of American society and in its egalitarian ideals. But he was offended by the ethos of grasping materialism and was convinced that the institution of slavery was bound to give rise to a tragic civil war. Drawing on documents and letters that have never before appeared in English, as well as on a wide range of scholarship, Tocqueville's Discovery of America brings the man, his ideas, and his world to startling life.

Book SACRIFICIAL SERVANT LEADER

Download or read book SACRIFICIAL SERVANT LEADER written by PIOUS JOSEPH PAUL YANZUH and published by ACTS MINISTRIES INTERNATIONAL. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses how these lay persons are inspired to lead, serve, and nurture congregations. Using the model which Jesus taught on servant leadership – “the son of man came to serve and not to be served” (Matt 20:28; Mk 10:45), an exploration is conducted on the concept of servant leadership, the characteristics and behaviors of sacrificial servant leaders, and the environmental factors that motivate sacrificial servant leaders to be effective in the Church. The purpose of this book is to encourage and motivate leaders to be sacrificial servant leaders and to enhance an effective church ministry. In this contemporary era and more than ever before, there is a need for sacrificial servant leadership and team-work to cope with the needs of the congregation. However, I approach sacrificial Servant leadership as the process of serving followers towards growth through sacrificial and selfless stewardship based on the example of Jesus Christ viewed within the Christian faith. In essence, the concepts of “sacrificial”, “selflessness”, and “stewardship” are foundational and define the larger facets of sacrificial servant leadership.

Book From My Old Kentucky Home to the White House The Political Journey of Catherine Conner

Download or read book From My Old Kentucky Home to the White House The Political Journey of Catherine Conner written by Catherine Conner and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively memoir recounts the story of a determined woman who led a remarkable life in the highest circles of power in both state and national politics. Catherine Conner spent her formative years on a farm named "Solitude," located outside of Bardstown. Her father, who taught her early to ride and swim, told the young woman, "I can't teach you how to be a lady, but I can teach you how to behave like a gentleman." She was weaned on a secret "early breakfast" of bourbon and milk toddies that her father brought to her every morning. Though she enjoyed privilege, Conner also witnessed the harsher sides of rural life. Those experiences markedly shaped the personality of a woman who would become the youngest National Democratic Committeewoman and would subsequently serve in FDR's inner circle. Conner began her political career in Kentucky under the tutelage of J. Dan Talbott of Bardstown, heading the successful effort to have Federal Hill, better known as "My Old Kentucky Home," preserved as a state park, which has now become one of the most popular in Kentucky. When local leaders proved only mildly supportive of the project, Conner devised a campaign in 1921 that raised $45,000 by having schoolchildren all over the state drop their pennies into a cardboard replica of the famous home. She acted as a special assistant to Harry Hopkins for five years, helping set up departments to carry out New Deal programs and lobbying. She befriended many of the shapers of the 20th Century, including Senator Sam Rayburn, A.B. "Happy" Chandler, and Senator Harry Byrd of Virginia. Throughout her life, Conner witnessed remarkable events. She saw the Hindenburg crash, met Amelia Earhart, and had Cary Grant show her how to gut a Thanksgiving turkey.

Book From West to East and Back Again

Download or read book From West to East and Back Again written by Peter Roberts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the great Western novelists of the twentieth century, the German writer Hermann Hesse is arguably one of the most important for educationists. Paying particular attention to Hesse’s last novel, The Glass Bead Game, and its immediate predecessor, The Journey to the East, this book suggests that Hesse was a man of the West who turned to the idea of ‘the East’ in seeking to understand himself and his society. From these later texts a rich, complex theory of educational transformation emerges. From West to East and Back Again examines the role of dialogue and uncertainty in the transformative process, considers utopian and ritualistic elements in Hesse’s work, and explores the notion of education serving as a bridge between life and death. Hesse’s novels address philosophical themes and questions of enduring significance, and this book will appeal to all who share an interest in human striving and growth.
