Book The Intersection of Material and Poetic Economy

Download or read book The Intersection of Material and Poetic Economy written by Anna Helm and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores the intersection of the material and poetic economies in Soll und Haben and Der Nachsommer. It demonstrates how the main poetical strategies of the two novels, dichotomization (Soll und Haben) and total economization (Der Nachsommer), are defined by economic themes, structures, and forms. The «economopoetics» of the novels, i.e. the multitude of connections between economics and aesthetics, pervades the texts on three different levels: as content, as representational model, and as literary strategy. Although very different in their treatment of topics relating to business and economics, both novels are driven by narratives parsed with economic expression. The diverging patterns of economopoetics support central commentaries on their underlying realist aesthetics. One important finding is that, in spite of money's apparent absence from the core content of some literary texts, economic relations are inherent in the narrative structure of those texts. The book shows that economopoetics is relevant not only to any extant literature which attempts explicitly to thematize business and economics (such as Soll und Haben), but also to that which does not (such as Der Nachsommer). Economic organizing principles are pervasive signatures of the novel's aesthetic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first smile, the first laugh, the first word... These are the eagerly anticipated and treasured moments in a child's early life. From the moment they're born, children are ready to experiment and learn about communicating -- whether with the cries of a hungry infant, the chuckles of a baby playing peek-a-boo, or the emphatic "No!" of an independent toddler. As parents and caregivers, our love for the young children in our lives points the way for us in responding to their needs and wants. But there are many ways that we can turn those responses into opportunities to nurture our children's developing understanding of language, and to start them on the path of becoming successful and lifelong learners. In Born to Learn: Developing a Child's Reading and Writing, the authors share decades of experience as teachers, researchers, and mothers in describing how to turn everyday activities into learning opportunities for babies and young children. From suggestions about language games, to ideas about turning household chores into times for conversation, to advice about books to share, Born to Learn is full of practical, hands-on, and fun ways to encourage speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Each chapter focuses on a particular stage in children's development -- from infancy through the pre-school years -- and highlights ways you can help your child learn and grow, and be ready to meet the challenges and adventure of entering school.

Her cousin Olga is enlisted as an accomplice in clumsy, youthful, romantic escapades. When America enters the conflict, the young men in the Long Island town where the girls live set aside their educations and eagerly enlist to serve the country. While Lenore bemoans the loss of most of her admirers, Olga does all she can to serve on the home front. The patriotism of the men sends them off with the certainty that they will quickly defeat the madman ravaging Europe. They fight tirelessly and eventually succeed in destroying the aggressor. The present study takes a new sequential approach by investigating compliments in context, considering compliment form, as part of a Positive Remark continuum, with the respective Response Strategy uttered in response. Analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively in multi-party conversations of the Santa Barbara Corpus of American English, the sequences suggest a connection between the address and reference terms in the Positive Remarks and the strategies chosen as a response.

Book Raising Boys to Be Good Men

Download or read book Raising Boys to Be Good Men written by Aaron Gouveia and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you are the parent of a boy . . . this is the book you need . . . insightful, enlightened, practical." —Peggy Orenstein, New York Times bestselling author of Boys & Sex From the dad who created the viral tweet supporting his son wearing nail polish, this essential parenting guide shares 36 parenting tips for battling gender norms, bringing down "man up" culture, and helping sons realize their potential. Our boys are in a crisis. Toxic masculinity and tough guy-ism are on display daily from our leaders, and we see anger, dysfunction, violence, and depression in young men who are suffocated by harmful social codes. Our young sons are told to stop throwing like a girl. They hear phrases like “man up” when they cry. They are told “boys will be boys” when they behave badly. The “Girl Power” movement has encouraged women to be whoever and do whatever they want, but that sentiment is not often extended to boys. Just watch the bullying when boys try ballet, paint their fingernails, or play with a doll. But we can treat this problem—and the power lies in the hands of parents. It's not only possible to raise boys who aren't emotionally stifled and shoved into stereotypical gender boxes; it's vital if we want a generation of men who can express their emotions, respect women, and help nurse society back to a halfway healthy place. We can reframe manhood. From Aaron Gouveia, who gained viral fame after tweeting his support for his son’s painted fingernails (and who knows toxic masculinity very well), learn practical and actionable tips such as: Don’t accept different standards for moms and dads Teach boys that “girl” is not an insult and retire phrases like “boys will be boys” Show boys that expressing their emotions and being physical is a good thing Let boys pursue nontraditional interests and hobbies Talk to boys about consent and privilege Model healthy and respectful relationships for boys to emulate Penned with equal parts humor, biting snark, and lived advice, Raising Boys to Be Good Men is the essential parenting guide for raising sons to realize their potential outside the box.
