Book Lenin s Final Fight

Book excerpt: As capitalism in the twenty-first century enters its deepest economic and social crisis since the decades spanning the first and second imperialist world wars, programmatic and strategic matters in dispute in the communist workers movement in the early 1920s once again weigh heavily in prospects for the working class worldwide to advance along its historic line of march toward the conquest of power.—From the introductionIn 1922 and 1923, V.I. Lenin, central leader of the world’s first socialist revolution, waged what was to be his last political battle. At stake was whether that revolution would remain on the proletarian course that had brought workers and peasants in the former tsarist empire to power in October 1917—and laid the foundations for a truly worldwide revolutionary movement of toilers organizing to emulate the Bolsheviks’ example.‘Who will win?’ Lenin asked in March 1922. Could the workers and peasants, emerging from years of war, devastation, and famine, continue to hold off the hostile capitalist world surrounding the Soviet republic? Above all, could they under those conditions prevail at home against rising bourgeois layers and their self-serving allies within the state and Communist Party apparatus? Lenin’s Final Fight brings together, for the first time, the reports, articles, and letters through which Lenin waged this political battle. Many were suppressed for decades, and some have never before appeared in English. “A new and informative introduction written by Jack Barnes and Steve Clark. Recommended for large academic collections ... .” —Library Journal online review of the Spanish edition La última lucha de Lenin “Told with his own documents and writings, Lenin’s Final Fight is a fascinating read.”—Midwest Book ReviewIntroduction by Jack Barnes and Steve Clark, chronology, notes, index.

Book Letters on Tactics

Download or read book Letters on Tactics written by Vladimir I. Lenin and published by . This book was released on 2002-05-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of letters by Lenin, originally published in 1917, in which he outlines the principal arguments which were especially essential for the "practical tasks" of the working-class movement. These letters came about after a series of meetings between Bolshevik and Menshevik delegations at various consulates and conferences led to an open split between the two groups; who concluded that they must "openly"discuss their differences - particularly on the unification of the Russian Social Democratic Social Party. Lenins letters in this volume were a response to this call, and carried heavy weight in the central committee meeting of the party in Petrograd, April of 1917.

Book Lenin and Trotsky What they really stood for

Download or read book Lenin and Trotsky What they really stood for written by Alan Woods and published by Wellred Books. This book was released on with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas of Lenin and Trotsky are without doubt the most distorted and slandered ideas in history. For more than 100 years, they have been subjected to an onslaught from the apologists of capitalism, who have attempted to present their ideas – Bolshevism – as both totalitarian and utopian. An entire industry was developed in an attempt to equate the crimes of Stalinism with the regime of workers' democracy that existed under Lenin and Trotsky. It is now more than fifty years since the publication of the first edition of this work. It was written as a reply to Monty Johnstone, who was a leading theoretician of the Communist Party of Great Britain. Johnstone had published a reappraisal of Leon Trotsky in the Young Communist League's journal Cogito at the end of 1968. Alan Woods and Ted Grant used the opportunity to write a detailed reply explaining the real relationship between the ideas of Lenin and Trotsky. This was no academic exercise. It was written as an appeal to the ranks of the Communist Party and the Young Communist League to rediscover the truth about Trotsky and return to the original revolutionary programme of Lenin. Also included in this new edition is Monty Johnstone's original Cogito article, as well as further material on Lenin's struggle with Stalin in the last month of his political life. The foreword is written by Trotsky's grandson, Vsievolod Volkov.

Book excerpt: Man has worshiped books from time immemorial - "the greatest wonders of all the wonders created by mankind" - to use Gorky's true words. Lenin said that books were a tremendous force. The catalogue of Lenin's private library in the Kremlin lists more than 8,400 titles. And these undoubtedly represent but a small fraction of the total number of books and other publications that interested Lenin in the course of his life. Lenin's writings include many documents of the greatest interest relating to books - articles, letters, critical reviews, surveys of books, speeches, notes, directives, etc. About 900 books, magazines and newspapers with Lenin's marks on them have been collected in the Institute of Marxism-Leninism. These all contain his profound thoughts on the social character of books and the part they play in the life of society, his comments on individual writers, judgments on particular books, advice to book publishers, suggestions on the work of libraries, and so on. A rich memoir literature has been written about Lenin. Many of his contemporaries have told us of the way Lenin worked with books, what and how he read, what he thought of works of fiction and political and scientific books. Lenin's own words and the reminiscences of him published in this collection will help the reader to get a better idea of Lenin as author of outstanding works of Marxist thought, research worker, editor, critic and reader. The materials are grouped under two headings: "Lenin on Books" and "Books in Lenin's Life." Each part is prefaced by a short introductory commentary containing a brief outline of the contents and any necessary explanations.

Book Death by Government

Download or read book Death by Government written by R. J. Rummel and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is R. J. Rummel's fourth book in a series devoted to genocide and government mass murder, or what he calls democide. He presents the primary results, in tables and figures, as well as a historical sketch of the major cases of democide, those in which one million or more people were killed by a regime. In Death by Government, Rummel does not aim to describe democide itself, but to determine its nature and scope in order to test the theory that democracies are inherently nonviolent. Rummel discusses genocide in China, Nazi Germany, Japan, Cambodia, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Poland, the Soviet Union, and Pakistan. He also writes about areas of suspected genocide: North Korea, Mexico, and feudal Russia. His results clearly and decisively show that democracies commit less democide than other regimes. The underlying principle is that the less freedom people have, the greater the violence; the more freedom, the less the violence. Thus, as Rummel says, “The problem is power. The solution is democracy. The course of action is to foster freedom.” Death by Government is a compelling look at the horrors that occur in modern societies. It depicts how democide has been very much a part of human history. Among other examples, the book includes the massacre of Europeans during the Thirty Years' War, the relatively unknown genocide of the French Revolution, and the slaughtering of American Indians by colonists in the New World. This riveting account is an essential tool for historians, political scientists, and scholars interested in the study of genocide.

Book V I Lenin on Youth

Download or read book V I Lenin on Youth written by Vladimir Ilich Lenin and published by . This book was released on 2001-05-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lenin always paid great attention to the young generation of workers, peasants and intellectuals and laid emphasis on involving the largest possible number of them in the revolutionary movement, the struggle to build a new socialist society. Back in 1895, when he drew up the program of the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party while in prison, he put forward the demand for universal suffrage for citizens at the age of 21 and over and for prohibition of employment of children under 15. While living in emigration on the eve of the first Russian revolution, Lenin closely followed the development of the students' movement in Tsarist Russia and in the pages of Iskra he stressed its importance for the general struggle of the Russian people against tsarism and called on the students to work out Marxist world outlook and actively assist the Social-Democrats in their illegal work. In August 1903, at the Second Congress of the Party, Lenin moved a resolution on the Social-Democrats' attitude towards students and made a speech on this question. Lenin did not confine himself to the youth movement in Russia only. As leader of the international proletariat, Lenin helped the young Social-Democrats of Switzerland, Sweden and other countries to arrive at a scientific world outlook and correct revolutionary tactics in the struggle against capitalism, passing on to them the experience of the Russian working class and its Party. The present collection includes Lenin's articles, speeches and letters on the youth, as well as those of his works which deal with problems facing the young generation. The various items in this collection are as a rule published in full, excerpts being used only when Lenin's statements on youth form part of his larger works.Lenin's works are distributed under the following heading: The Condition of Children and Young People under Capitalism, The Revolutionary Movement Among the Student Youth in Tsarist Russia, Participation of Young Workers and Peasants in the Revolutionary Struggle and Revolutionary Training of Youth and Participation of Youth in Socialist Construction - Education of the New Man.Vladimir Ilich Lenin (1870-1924) was the founder of the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks), inspirer and leader of Bolshevik Revolution (1917), and the architect, builder, and first head (1917-24) of the Soviet State. He was the founder of the organization known as Comintern (Communist International) and the posthumous source of "Leninism," the doctrine codified and conjoined with Marx's works by Lenin's successors to form Marxism-Leninism, which became the Communist world view. If the Bolshevik Revolution is - as some people have called it - the most significant political event of the 20th century, then Lenin must for good or ill be regarded as the century's most significant political leader. Not only in the scholarly circles of the former Soviet Union but even among many non-Communist scholars, he has been regarded as the greatest revolutionary leader and revolutionary statesman in history, as well as the greatest revolutionary thinker since Marx.
