Book Law and Social Order in the United States

Download or read book Law and Social Order in the United States written by James Willard Hurst and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one who has long pioneered in enlarging the study of American legal history, this book defines and explores a relatively new field—the social history of law in the United States. Professor Hurst begins by setting forth some of the potential subject areas for this field, pointing up a wide range of possibilities. He proceeds to outline the development of the characteristic powers, capabilities, and limitations of the major legal agencies whose work furnishes the core of legal history. Next he offers examples from the history of law viewed in relation to other social institutions and to broadly shared values in society, treating first law, science, and technology, and then law's efforts to shape, serve, and adapt to the market and the big business corporations. In "Retrospect," his brief concluding chapter, he summarizes his views on the role and function of legal history. A major synthetic achievement, this book should be of compelling interest to social historians, historians of law, political scientists, and others concerned with the legal dimensions of social history.

Book The Corporation and the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The Corporation and the Twentieth Century written by Richard N. Langlois and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive reframing of the economic, institutional, and intellectual history of the managerial era The twentieth century was the managerial century in the United States. An organizational transformation, from entrepreneurial to managerial capitalism, brought forth what became a dominant narrative: that administrative coordination by trained professional managers is essential to the efficient running of organizations both public and private. And yet if managerialism was the apotheosis of administrative efficiency, why did both its practice and the accompanying narrative lie in ruins by the end of the century? In The Corporation and the Twentieth Century, Richard Langlois offers an alternative version: a comprehensive and nuanced reframing and reassessment of the economic, institutional, and intellectual history of the managerial era. Langlois argues that managerialism rose to prominence not because of its inherent superiority but because of its contingent value in a young and rapidly developing American economy. The structures of managerialism solidified their dominance only because the century’s great catastrophes of war, depression, and war again superseded markets, scrambled relative prices, and weakened market-supporting institutions. By the end of the twentieth century, Langlois writes, these market-supporting institutions had reemerged to shift advantage toward entrepreneurial and market-driven modes of organization. This magisterial new account of the rise and fall of managerialism holds significant implications for contemporary debates about industrial and antitrust policies and the role of the corporation in the twenty-first century.

Book Closed End Funds Exchange Traded Funds and Hedge Funds

Download or read book Closed End Funds Exchange Traded Funds and Hedge Funds written by Seth Anderson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Closed-End Funds, Exchange-Traded Funds, and Hedge Funds: Origins, Functions, and Literature is a concise and valuable book that will be of interest to individual investors, financial professionals, and academic researchers, alike. It provides a brief history and institutional discussion of these investment companies and also presents a summary of the research on these funds. Investment practitioners will find the book useful as a reference and as a quick refresher on the current state of knowledge regarding each fund type. Equally important, it provides academic researchers with an accurate institutional framework within which to cast their theoretical models, and a point of departure for expanding the empirical analysis for improving our understanding of these funds. All-in-all, this is a very valuable book; I highly recommend it." (John J. Jackson, Professor of Economics, Auburn University) "Professors Anderson, Born, and Schnusenberg provide a valuable service in this monograph. The practical significance of closed-end funds, exchange-traded funds, and hedge funds has increased dramatically in recent years, but all too many academics and investors know little about them. This text presents a carefully-focused and understandable description of these investment vehicles, highlighting the big, unresolved questions, while also including careful and fair accounts of the state of the literature. Nothing extraneous clutters the presentation, but, more importantly, nothing necessary is left out. Highly recommended." (T. Randolph Beard, Professor of Economics and Public Policy, Auburn University) "This book is both useful as a reference book and as an additive, educational overview of ETFs and hedge funds, as well as CEFs. In today’s tumultuous markets, much reference is made to these subjects without a clear understanding of the vehicles, their structure and their history. This is a very timely publication and should be viewed as an important read. The book contains definitive explanations and also includes an excellent summary of past works in this area. Readable, informative and highly useful as a reference source." (Kathleen A. Wayner, President and CEO, Bowling Portfolio Management)

Book American Economic History

Download or read book American Economic History written by James S. Olson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering figures, events, policies, and organizations, this comprehensive reference tool enhances readers' appreciation of the role economics has played in U.S. history since 1776. A study of the U.S. economy is important to understanding U.S. politics, society, and culture. To make that study easier, this dictionary offers concise essays on more than 1,200 economics-related topics. Entries cover a broad array of pivotal information on historical events, legislation, economic terms, labor unions, inventions, interest groups, elections, court cases, economic policies and philosophies, economic institutions, and global processes. Economics-focused biographies and company profiles are featured as sidebars, and the work also includes both a chronology of major events in U.S. economic history and a selective bibliography. Encompassing U.S. history since 1776 with an emphasis on recent decades, entries range from topics related to the early economic formation of the republic to those that explore economic aspects of information technology in the 21st century. The work is written to be clearly understood by upper-level high school students, but offers sufficient depth to appeal to undergraduates. In addition, the general public will be attracted by informative discussions of everything from clean energy to what keeps interest rates low.
