Download or read book Colorado Women written by Gail M. Beaton and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorado Women is the first full-length chronicle of the lives, roles, and contributions of women in Colorado from prehistory through the modern day. A national leader in women's rights, Colorado was one of the first states to approve suffrage and the first to elect a woman to its legislature. Nevertheless, only a small fraction of the literature on Colorado history is devoted to women and, of those, most focus on well-known individuals. The experiences of Colorado women differed greatly across economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. Marital status, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation colored their worlds and others' perceptions and expectations of them. Each chapter addresses the everyday lives of women in a certain period, placing them in historical context, and is followed by vignettes on women's organizations and notable individuals of the time. Native American, Hispanic, African American, Asian and Anglo women's stories hail from across the state--from the Eastern Plains to the Front Range to the Western Slope--and in their telling a more complete history of Colorado emerges. Colorado Women makes a significant contribution to the discussion of women's presence in Colorado that will be of interest to historians, students, and the general reader interested in Colorado, women's and western history.

Book The Colorado State Constitution

Download or read book The Colorado State Constitution written by Richard Collins and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In gathering the information needed to write this book, the authors came to appreciate several themes. First, the Colorado Constitution and case law offer a novel and refreshing perspectives on the history of the state. Most major social movements, crises, embarrassments and celebrations ended up in state courts, with a constitutional argument by at least one major participant. The courts' role was often decisive and occasionally miscast in traditional histories. Second, over long stretches of time the Colorado Supreme Court's performance was less than exemplary. The original three-judge court in the 1880s launched the judicial branch very well, and the modern court is professional and conscientious. During many other periods, the court was blatantly partisan and at times, well, just zany. The court's relationship to the legislature vacillated from too little deference, such as the court's pro-business and anti-labor stance during the 1890-1920 period or the court's strange interference with relief for the poor during the Depression, to too much deference, such as the court's blessing after 1905 of numerous taxing and debt schemes pushed by the legislature to subsidize a variety of private industries. The framers' rules for the structure and processes of government, however, have held up and continue to serve. Since the 1850s this beautiful spot of geography has been witness to a turbulent, tumultuous, occasionally violent boom-and-bust style of human society that continues. For residents it has been and is life in high, unpredictable winds"--

Book The Rise of the Centennial State

Download or read book The Rise of the Centennial State written by Eugene H. Berwanger and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid description of Colorado's beginnings This is the first single-volume history of the Colorado territory, encompassing the entire territorial period from the beginning of the Civil War to 1876, when Colorado became a state. The Rise of the Centennial State traces the growth of the territory as new technologies increased mining profits and as new modes of transportation--especially the Union Pacific and Kansas Pacific railroads--opened the territory to eastern markets, bringing waves of settlers to farm, ranch, and establish new communities. Eugene H. Berwanger's history is packed with colorful characters and portraits of sprawling, brawling frontier and mining towns from Denver to Central City. He presents a multifaceted discussion of Colorado's resurgence after the war, with rich discussions of the role of minorities in the territory's development: Indian-white relations (including discussions of now forgotten battles of Beecher's Island and Summit Springs, which destroyed the Indians' hold on the Colorado Plains); the social segregation of blacks in Denver; and Mexican Americans' displeasure at being separated from the Hispano culture of New Mexico. Berwanger also demonstrates the decisive role of Colorado's admission to statehood in swinging the disputed presidential election of 1876 to the Republican candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes.
