Book Ps Athenagoras De Resurrectione

Download or read book Ps Athenagoras De Resurrectione written by Nikolai Kiel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authorship of De Resurrectione traditionally ascribed to the apologist Athenagoras, and its dating are controversial to this day. Nikolai Kiel proves in this study that the resurrection treatise is pseudonymous. By positioning the text within the intellectual-historical context of early resurrection debates, its origin can be dated to the first half of the 3rd century. The discourse horizon of the discussed tractate has been determined more precisely by means of a reconstruction of the constituent opposing position. Through his interpretative survey of De Resurrectione, the author has advanced the study of apologetic literature from the early patristic Era.

Download or read book Athenagorae qui fertur De resurrectione mortuorum written by M. Marcovich and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph comprises a new critical edition of Ps.-Athenagoras De Resurrectione Mortuorum, a complete edition of Arethas’ Scholia on the treatise, and (in the Appendix) a critical edition of the extant fragments of De Resurrectione attributed to Justin Martyr. Athenagoras was a Christian apologist, who flourished in the second half of the second century CE (ca. 180). Traditionally two extant Greek works have been attributed to him: a Plea on Behalf of the Christians, probably addressed to the Roman emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, and the On the Resurrection of the Dead. The attribution of the latter treatise to Athenagoras has been a matter of dispute. In his Introduction, the editor sides with those scholars denying Athenagoras’ authorship, but ascribes its date to the end of the second century. This important edition by one of the most esteemed scholars in the field complements Prof. Marcovich’s edition of Athenagoras Legatio pro Christianis (Berlin, 1989).

Book excerpt: 'Deification' refers to the transformation of believers into the likeness of God. Of course, Christian monotheism goes against any literal 'god making' of believers. Rather, the NT speaks of a transformation of mind, a metamorphosis of character, a redefinition of selfhood, and an imitation of God. Most of these passages are tantalizingly brief, and none spells out the concept in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the apologies Request for Christians and Treatise on the Resurrection, Athenagoras draws abundantly both from the thoughts of the Greek philosophers-Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics-as well as from the reflections of Philo of Alexandria, John the Evangelist and Paul the Apostle. God creates, orders and maintains everything through his Logos. The Logos of God is described as the Platonic idea (ἰδέα) by which people are formed, and also the Aristotelian energy (ἐνεργεία), namely, the working power that creates humanity for eternal participation in God's happiness. The Athenian Philosopher confirms that the Logos manifests his presence in the world through spiritual beings. Ultimately, the main task of all human beings is to partake in the order given by the divine Logos.

Download or read book Athenagoras written by David Rankin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athenagoras of Athens was a Christian thinker of the second century who engaged with contemporary philosophical thought in the matters of the divine, and the relationship of that divine to the material world. While clearly a Christian apologist, Athenagoras presents doctrines of God, of the Holy Trinity, and of other theological matters which clearly evidence an engagement with Greek philosophical thought which goes beyond the merely linguistic and embraces the notion of God as true being. Athenagoras is a Church Father who has not been given great attention in twentieth-century and early twenty-first-century scholarship. This book explores Athenagoras' undeniable place in the development of Christian thought on the divine, on the Trinity, on the human person, and on the resurrection. His work provides an important link between the mid-second-century and the work of Justin and that of the third-century Christian theologians of the East.

Book Premodern Faith in a Postmodern Culture

Download or read book Premodern Faith in a Postmodern Culture written by Peter Drilling and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2006 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Premodern Faith in a Postmodern Culture, Peter Drilling presents a how-to guide to assist believers in seeing how the process of coming to faith in the triune God of the Christian tradition is not only reasonable and authentic in its original development, but also continues to be relevant in light of modern and postmodern challenges. This work implements Bernard Lonergan's method to highlight the consistency of the Christian faith and includes various directions believers can take, both theoretical and practical, to apply faith in the Trinity.

Download or read book Athenagoras written by Leslie William Barnard and published by Editions Beauchesne. This book was released on 1972 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athenagoras, the late-second-century apologist, was almost unknown in Christian antiquity and has not attracted much attention from modern scholars. This study examines systematically what is known of his life, his works, his background in Greek philosophy and in the Biblical and Christian tradition. His doctrines of God, of the Logos-Son, the Holy Spirit and the Trinity are discussed as is his doctrine of Creation and of man. His knowlege of the Church and liturgy is shown to be more extensive than has beensometimes thought. Finally his strong emphasis on the Christian life and his witness to the moral goodness found among Christians from all classes of society are shown to be convincing proofs of the difference Christianity has made by its coming into the Graeco-Roman world. The author argues that the value of Athenagoras' work lies in his sensitivity to the intellectual currents of his time which he sought to adapt to the service of the Christian faith.

Book Kissing Christians

Download or read book Kissing Christians written by Michael Philip Penn and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first five centuries of the common era, the kiss was a distinctive and near-ubiquitous marker of Christianity. Although Christians did not invent the kiss—Jewish and pagan literature is filled with references to kisses between lovers, family members, and individuals in relationships of power and subordination—Christians kissed one another in highly specific settings and in ways that set them off from the non-Christian population. Christians kissed each other during prayer, Eucharist, baptism, and ordination and in connection with greeting, funerals, monastic vows, and martyrdom. As Michael Philip Penn shows in Kissing Christians, this ritual kiss played a key role in defining group membership and strengthening the social bond between the communal body and its individual members. Kissing Christians presents the first comprehensive study of the ritual kiss and how controversies surrounding it became part of larger debates regarding the internal structure of Christian communities and their relations with outsiders. Penn traces how Christian writers exalted those who kissed only fellow Christians, proclaimed that Jews did not have a kiss, prohibited exchanging the kiss with potential heretics, privileged the confessor's kiss, prohibited Christian men and women from kissing each other, and forbade laity from kissing clergy. Kissing Christians also investigates connections between kissing and group cohesion, kissing practices and purity concerns, and how Christian leaders used the motif of the kiss of Judas to examine theological notions of loyalty, unity, forgiveness, hierarchy, and subversion. Exploring connections between bodies, power, and performance, Kissing Christians bridges the gap between cultural and liturgical approaches to antiquity. It breaks significant new ground in its application of literary and sociological theory to liturgical history and will have a profound impact on these fields.
