The idea that you can work hard and achieve your dreams of going to college, getting a good job, and raising a family is the cornerstone of American society. Unfortunately, the economic and social consequences of having a criminal record in today's society can stand in the way of your dreams and negatively impact your life forever. A conviction or an arrest for a criminal or disorderly persons offense means that you have a criminal history record that is publicly available for everyone to see. Contrary to popular belief, dismissed or dropped charges or a not guilty verdict by a judge or jury does not mean that you automatically escape the ostracism associated with having a criminal record. You beat the case but not the rep. Unfortunately, anyone who sees your criminal record will unfairly view your innocence with skepticism. The simple solution is to expunge your criminal record and restore your reputation. Otherwise, your criminal record could haunt you for the rest of your life. "America is the land of the second chance - and when the gates of the prison open, the path ahead should lead to a better life." - George W. Bush "People do make mistakes and I think they should be punished. But they should be forgiven and given the opportunity for a second chance. We are human beings." - David Millar "I think my thing is I grew up in the ghetto, and I was able to get a second chance. That's what I'm trying to tell kids." - Master P "There's nothing as exciting as a comeback - seeing someone with dreams, watching them fail, and then getting a second chance." - Rachel Griffith

Book Protecting New Jersey s Environment

Download or read book Protecting New Jersey s Environment written by Thomas Belton and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contaminants in fish. Ocean dumping. Biological diversity/integrity and endangered species. Pinelands and forest preservation. Wetlands protection. Watersheds and headwaters. In Protecting New Jersey's Environment these concerns translate into real human interest stories about people and their surroundings not only in the state-a critical site for the growth of environmentalism-but all around the country as well. And you can add even more to the list-ozone depletion, nuclear power, toxic waste, sprawl, racial inequity, brownfields remediation versus environmental justice concerns. Through a series of gripping accounts organized by geographic area, Thomas Belton considers key environmental issues in New Jersey and champions the ways common citizens have sought justice when faced with unseen health threats. Often, as people search for remedies in their neighborhoods, the challenges they face result in what Belton calls bare-knuckles environmental protection, replete with back-room political deals, infighting, criminals, and hapless victims. With people as its focus, Protecting New Jersey's Environment explores the science underpinning environmental issues and the public policy infighting that goes undocumented behind the scenes and beneath the controversies. Belton demonstrates the ways that scientists, regulators, lobbyists, and politicians interact and offers the public a go-to guide on how to seek environmental protection in practical ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Older--and often economically depressed--industrial cities generally have a number of well located but abandoned industrial sites. Too frequently these sites are heavily polluted by the residue of toxic wastes dumped when old factories were still in use. These "brownfield" sites must be cleaned up under existing law before they can be redeveloped. And yet the question of who will bear the cost of this cleanup frequently stymies efforts to return these sites to productive use. A complicated net of federal, state and local regulations can involve several generations of owners in potential liability for the cleanup, frequently resulting only in extended litigation, not often in the cleanup of the site. In this book, Elizabeth Glass Geltman surveys the laws on both the federal and state level with regard to the cleanup of brownfield sites. The author makes valuable suggestions for reforming these laws that will help encourage land reuse and the accompanying redevelopment of the industrial base of many American cities both large and small. Elizabeth Glass Geltman is Professor of Law, George Washington University Law School and is the author of many books on environmental law, including Modern Environmental Law: Policy and Practice.
