Download or read book Opening Closed Guard the Origins of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil written by robert drysdale and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-26 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the origins of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Is it merely a by-product--a rebel offspring--of Judo? What was the nature and content of the art that Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Count Koma", and other Japanese were teaching in the Amazon? Was it Judo? Jiu-Jitsu? His own personal fight-tested style, built on a foundation of Judo and informed by his dozens and dozens of matches around the world? What was the bridge between the art he learned at the Kodokan and the Brazilian style that claims him as its godfather: a style now practiced by millions worldwide (and growing bigger every day)? Should Maeda even be at the center of this story? And what role did Carlos and Hélio Gracie play in all of this? Did they "invent" BJJ? Would BJJ exist without them? And, if so, what--if anything--did they create? And why does this history matter to the average BJJ practitioner today? Any history possesses its official narrative with its own favorite characters and events. But true history is seldom simple, and more oft than not the real story is far richer than the popular version that is widely repeated and handed down. The history of BJJ and MMA in Brazil doesn't escape this paradigm. The recent renaissance in research in regards to the history of martial arts in Brazil led to the author's curiosity, which in turn led to the documentary Closed-Guard: The Origins of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, which in turn led to this book. This manuscript started as an account of the author's recollections of the film's production, and quickly grew into much more. Opening Closed Guard: The Story Behind the Film contains conclusions, analysis, and historical interpretations, as well as the story behind the documentary itself and the many challenges it faced along the way. It contains interviews, research articles pertaining to the history of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, as well as the author's own take on the current state of BJJ and MMA. Finally, it is the story of the author rediscovering his love for Jiu-Jitsu in a completely new and unexpected way. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in the US from a Brazilian mother and American father, and having spent his life between these two countries, Robert Drysdale remains the only American competitor to have ever won both the IBJJF and ADCC World Championships, the two most prestigious tournaments in all of Jiu-Jitsu. Furthermore, he has also cultivated a career in MMA, both as a fighter and as a coach. The author also holds a Bachelor's Degree in History, as well as a long-held passion for this discipline. He lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. He is also the co-founder of the international team Zenith Jiu-Jitsu, and is the father of two girls.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the world’s most popular UFC fighter, Georges “Rush” St. Pierre, comes a startlingly honest portrait of a fighter’s journey, highlighting the lessons that propelled his rise from bullying victim to internationally celebrated athlete and champion. There’s more to winning battles than fists and feet For world-renowned professional fighter Georges St-Pierre, the greatest asset is not physical strength or athleticism—it’s a sense of purpose. From his beginnings as a small, mercilessly bullied child first discovering karate to his years as a struggling garbage collector who spent all his free time in the gym, his hard-fought rise in the sport of mixed martial arts, and his long, painful recovery from a career-threatening injury, Georges never lost sight of his ambition to become the greatest martial artist of all time. In The Way of the Fight, Georges for the first time reveals what propelled him not only to become a champion but to embrace obstacles as opportunities to build character. The Way of the Fight is an inspirational look into the mindset of a master. To Georges, all life is competition, and there’s no more perfect metaphor for competition than the life of a fighter. He explains the value of discipline, risk and even fear, with the wisdom of one who knows that nothing is assured—his next fight could always be his last. Drawing inspiration from fighting legends, Eastern philosophy and a trusted inner circle, The Way of the Fight is a powerful, life-changing guide to living with purpose and finding the way to accomplish your loftiest goals.

Download or read book Principle of Aiki and Its Application in Aikido and Aikijujutsu written by Alun James Harris and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aiki, the unbalancing element of the martial arts of Aikido and Aikijujutsu, is the least understood aspect of these arts. Generally, descriptions of Aiki vary from the mystical to vague concepts like blending with the attacker's energy. This book gives a meaningful and practical bio-mechanical definition of Aiki. This description of Aiki clearly differentiates it from the unbalancing methods used in the associated martial arts of Judo, Jujutsu and Wrestling. Using this definition, Aiki can be applied in three fundamental forms. For each form, a detailed description of how Aiki is applied is given and is supplemented with demonstrations, so that the reader can experience the unbalancing effect of Aiki. Examples are described in detail, showing how each form of Aiki is applied in the techniques of Aikido and Aikijujutsu. The explanation of Aiki given here unifies the arts of Aikido and Aikijujutsu. Throughout the book, the ideas discussed are supported with illustrated diagrams. The Principle of Aiki described in this book has been used to analyse the unbalancing element of Aikido and Aikijujutsu techniques recorded on Youtube by well known Aikido and Aikijujutsu Sensei. This supporting material is available on the author's website aiki.simdif.com.
Download or read book The MMA Encyclopedia written by Jonathan Snowden and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ' "Did you see the big fight this weekend'" The question used to be about boxing matches, when the giants of the fight world were Mike Tyson and Roy Jones. Now fans are leaving the sweet science in droves for the combat sport of the future: mixed martial arts (MMA). MMA has drawn millions on cable and network television, as well as out-performed professional wrestling and boxing on pay-per-view. Fans are attracted to the sport, but unlike boxing (where strategy and technique are limited to using both your left and right hands), an MMA fight can be surprisingly complicated. The MMA Encyclopedia puts the fighters, the facts, and the fundamentals of the world's fastest growing sport at your fingertips as the definitive reference guide to mixed martial arts. The encyclopedia will break the MMA language barrier for those who don't know a wristlock from a wristwatch, while at the same time offering perspective and analysis that will entertain the hardcore fan who already has the basics down pat. With three appendices that detail the results of every MMA'fight in history, this the ultimate reference book for the ultimate sport.

When our environment fails to challenge our depths, we are tasked to create one which does. Practitioners across the globe continue to use Jiu Jitsu as a tool for personal development. For many, the Jiu Jitsu academy is the one place in which we purposefully practice virtuous action. "On Jiu Jitsu" seeks to codify the mechanisms by which Jiu Jitsu shapes the individual, as the character traits required to achieve mastery in sport are the same which our highest humanity requires. It is the hope of the author that the articulation of these benefits will ensure the reader's continued practice of self-mastery through this sacred medium.
