Book excerpt: Originally published to great acclaim in 1976, The American Monument has become one of the most sought-after photography publications of the 20th century. Long out of print, this second edition is once again available again for all to enjoy and own. Published in the same oversized format as the first editionwith exquisite duotone reproductions of the original 213 photographsthe album of post-bound single sheets can easily be disassembled for display. Considered by many, including Friedlander himself, to be one of his most important books, The American Monument has influenced generations of photographers, curators and art historians. The second edition includes the original essay by Eakins Press founder Leslie George Katz along with a new essay by eminent past NYCs Museum of Modern Arts photography curator and Friedlander scholar Peter Galassi, which illuminates the history and continued significance of this iconic artist and this early publication. The deeply influential American curator of photography at MoMA during the 1960s-70s, John Szarkowski (19272007), stated: I am still astonished and heartened by the deep affection of those pictures, by the photographers tolerant equanimity in the face of the facts, by the generosity of spirit, the freedom from pomposity and rhetoric. One might call this work an act of high artistic patriotism, an achievement that might help us reclaim that word from ideologues and expediters. Lee Friedlander is the recipient of three Guggenheim Fellowships as well as a MacArthur Fellowship. He has published more than 50 monographs since 1969, and exhibited extensively around the world for the past five decades, including a major retrospective at the MoMA, NY, in 2005.

Book excerpt: With a career spanning seven decades, renowned American photographer Lee Friedlander has produced an unrivaled photographic output documenting seemingly every aspect of the American "social landscape" (a term Friedlander coined), with a specific focus on creating books. "Books are my medium," Friedlander has been quoted as saying. Friedlander First Fifty provides an inside look at Friedlander's first fifty books, featuring extensive commentary directly from Friedlander on his own work. The book contains photographs from each of the first fifty books, as well as descriptions, publication information, and most notably, interviews with Friedlander and his wife, Maria, conducted by Friedlander's grandson, Giancarlo, and daughter, Anna, who together co-published the book. The result is the most personal and candid look at Friedlander's life and career to date, as told to his own family. Published over a fifty year period, from 1969-2018, the first fifty books describe the entirety of subject matter -- from jazz musicians to factory workers to monuments to television screens -- and genres -- from self-portraits to street photographs to nudes to landscapes -- Friedlander has explored. Containing the largest collection of Friedlander's own quotes ever published, Friedlander First Fifty offers a behind-the-scenes look at the photographer's diverse oeuvre that contextualizes and brings new life to the work, for everyone from the casual art appreciator to the most ardent Friedlander fan.

Book Chain Link

Download or read book Chain Link written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee Friedlander is celebrated for his ability to weave disparate elements from ordinary life into uncanny images of great formal complexity and visual wit. And few things have attracted his attention--or been more unpredictable in their effect--than the humble chain link fence. Erected to delineate space, form protective barriers and bring order to chaos, the fences in Friedlander's pictures catch filaments of light, throw disconcerting shadows and visually interrupt scenes without fully occluding them. Sometimes the steel mesh seems as delicate as lace; at others it appears as tough as snakeskin. In this book's 97 pictures, drawn from over four decades of work, it recurs as versatile, utilitarian and ubiquitous--not unlike the photographer himself.

Download or read book American Geography written by Sandra S. Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from the vast photography collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, American Geography charts a visual history of land use in the United States From the earliest photographic records of human habitation to the latest aerial and digital pictures, from almost uninhabited desert and isolated mountainous territories to suburban sprawl and densely populated cities, this compilation offers an increasingly nuanced perspective on the American landscape. Divided by region, these photographs address ways in which different histories and traditions of land use have given rise to different cultural transitions: from the Midwestern prairies and agricultural traditions of the South, to the riverine systems in the Northeast, and the environmental challenges and riches of the far West. American Geography also looks at the evidence of older habitation from the adobe dwellings and ancient cultures of the Southwest to the Midwestern mounds, many of them prehistoric. SFMOMA's last photography exhibition to consider land use, Crossing the Frontier (1996), examined only the American West. At the time, this focus offered a different way to think about landscape, and a useful way to reconsider pictures of the region. American Geography expands upon the groundwork laid by Crossing the Frontier, providing a complex, thought-provoking survey. Photographers include: Carleton E. Watkins, Barbara Bosworth, Lee Friedlander, Stephen Shore, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Mitch Epstein, An-My Lê, William Eggleston, Alec Soth, Mishka Henner, Trevor Paglen, Victoria Sambunaris, Emmet Gowin, Robert Adams, Terry Evans, Dorothea Lange and Mark Ruwedel, among others.

Book excerpt: "In this collection of photographs we see the world of industrial work refracted through the Friedlander lens. Over a period of 16 years he did his own work amongst American workers in locations as diverse as factories, offices, telemarketing centers, and corporate offices. Some of his work gathered here was commissioned by curators, some by corporate CEOs, but all the images re-align the world of work for the rest of us, showing us relationships between objects, people, and places that would escape a less idiosyncratic observer."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: "The Nude lies at the centre of Western art. From the beginning of photography it has attracted photographers, many of whom have imitated the forms and postures portrayed by painters. There are a few moments when a photographer has abandoned derivative styles and allowed the viewer to see the body in completely new manner. This occured in America in the work of Edward Weston and in Britain in the work of Bill Brandt. It now occurs in the photographs of Lee Friedlander. ver the last fifteen years, Friedlander has been working with a number of models to create his own way of seeing and photographing the female nude. Little of this work has ever appeared. The photographs are both highly intimate and coolly detached. The frequently surprising perspectives are balanced by the mundane backdrops of ordinary life, the real domestic interiors of the models. his book is published on the occasion of an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and confirms Friedlander's stature as one of the greatest photographers of his generation. He appears to have taken a primary theme of Western art and re-invented it."

Book American Photography

Download or read book American Photography written by Vicki Goldberg and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful and informative photographic history includes images from 1900 to 1999. Many are often seen (bullet piercing the apple, splashing crown of milk, Sophia Loren looking askance at Jayne Mansfield's plunging decollete, and Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother); but most are probably unknown, because the photos were selected not only for their visual and cognitive qualities but also for their importance to the history and development of photographic technique and usage. The century is divided into thirds for explanation's sake, and there is at least one photograph for every year. While this is a picture book, the accompanying text provides informative introductions to the uses and abuses of perhaps the century's most important medium. The book is companion to the PBS series. Oversize: 12.5x9.5". Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: "American Exposures sheds light on photographs, from Arthur Mole's propagandistic 'living photographs' of American icons and symbols to the exploration of contemporary subcultural communities by the Korean-born photographer and performance artist Nikki Lee, and asserts that the depiction of community is a central component to photography. Louis Kaplan deploys a number of critical concepts and theories developed by Jean-Luc Nancy in The Inoperative Community, as well as other philosophers, and applies them to the field of photography studies. With an original approach to photography from Edward Steichen's Family of Man exhibition to Pedro Meyer and the rise of the digital image, Kaplan points to a new way to think about the intimate relationship among photography, American life, and the artistic imagination." -- Back cover.

Book American Prospects 2023

Download or read book American Prospects 2023 written by Joel Sternfeld and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive edition of Joel Sternfeld's seminal American Prospects, featuring new photographs, and a revised format and cover First published in 1987 to critical acclaim, the seminal American Prospects has been likened to Walker Evans' American Photographs and Robert Frank's The Americans in both its ability to visually summarize the zeitgeist of a decade and to influence the course of photography following its publication. This definitive edition of American Prospects contains 12 new pictures, most of which have neither been published nor exhibited. Freed from the size constraints of previous editions, Sternfeld includes portraits and portraits in the landscape that elucidate the human condition in America. The result is a more complex and rounded view of American society that strongly anticipates Sternfeld's Stranger Passing series (1985-2000) and links the two bodies of work. A major figure in the photography world, Joel Sternfeld was born in New York City in 1944. He has received numerous awards, including two Guggenheim fellowships, a Prix de Rome and the Citibank Photography Award. Sternfeld's books published by Steidl include American Prospects (2003), Sweet Earth (2006), Oxbow Archive (2008), First Pictures (2012) and Landscape as Longing (2016) with Frank Gohlke.
