Book The Revelation of St John Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of St. John In answering the call for a third edition of these Lectures the author has thought it desirable to make a change in the mode of their publication. In former editions the Lectures were followed by several Appendices, treating of such important subjects as the Authorship of the Apocalypse, its Relation to the Fourth Gospel, its Date, and its Unity. These topics appeal to a narrower circle of readers than the Lectures themselves; while, at the same time, the growing rather than diminishing interest in the subjects discussed, together with the progress of inquiry, render it necessary that they should be treated anew, and the treatment brought down to the present hour. The author therefore now separates the Appendices from the Lectures; and, after having reconsidered them in the light of the most recent literature on the subject, he hopes to publish them in a volume of Discussions similar, at least in part, to that which was spoken of in the Preface to the first edition of this work. This volume will be prepared with as little delay as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instructions on the Revelation of St. John the Divine: Being an Attempt to Make This Book More Intelligible to the Ordinary Reader and So to Encourage the Study of It Some time ago I was much struck by a suggestion made by Professor Milligan, in his valuable Lectures on the Apocalypse, to the effect that the Revelation of St. John might be regarded as an extended account of Our Lord's discourses on the four last things. I had long felt that the book was misunderstood, that it was one for all time, and that its glorious revelation could not be satisfied by any theory which limited it to mere history, to the dynasties of the world, or to the de lineations of papacy. Book The Revelation of John Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revelation of John Classic Reprint written by Arthur Samuel Peake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of John HE present volume owes its origin to an accident. The Hartley Lecture for 1919 should have been delivered by the Rev. A. T. Guttery. In consequence of his acceptance of an important Government mission to America, and the burden imposed by the Presidency of the National Free Church Council, he felt that it would be better to postpone his lecture. Accordingly I was invited to take his place and Dr. Guttery is to deliver the lecture in 1920. This request was made to me late in October, 1918. I was very heavily overburdened at the time, but felt it my duty to accept the call of my Church, especially since Hartley College had for some time been closed. Little could be done at the book before Christmas, but it seemed possible to complete it by the end of March. Illness and the unexpected reopening of Hartley College prevented this; all the more that University work had continuedwithout interruption, and that the Commentary on the Bible I had so long been editing was not finally dismissed till May. The book could not be completed till the end of July, since the new duties involved in the Editorship of the Holbom Review cut deeply into my time. Book The Revelation of S John

Download or read book The Revelation of S John written by Lucius Waterman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of S. John: A Lecture Introductory, to the Study of the Book With an Analysis of the Book and Some Account of Its Number Symbols The history of this Lecture will explain how the author of these pages was persuaded to overcome an almost insuperable diffidence and finally permit them to be printed. Twenty-five years ago a course of Instructions upon the Book of Revelation was given at All Saints' Church, Littleton, New Hampshire. A young newspaper reporter drove himself (from a rather stern sense of duty) to attend the first of the series. After that first venture, although attendance at subsequent instructions was only possible by a peculiar sacrifice, not one in the series was missed. For years the fascinated auditor has begged that the course be expanded into a series of Lectures and printed for general use. When himself rector of a parish, he secured Dr. Waterman for his people, and this Introductory Lecture (which already had been given at S. Paul's Church, Concord, New Hampshire) was delivered. When to the reiterated petition of the former years there was added the request of one hundred of the parish, the weight of desire was sufficient to induce the lecturer to consent to publication. This introduction to the Book of Revelation will be a disappointment to many - because it is only an Introduction. Book The Revelation of St John the Divine

Download or read book The Revelation of St John the Divine written by Michael F. Sadler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of St. John the Divine: With Notes Critical and Practical We must examine the authenticity of the Apocalypse in the same way as we have that of other books of the rest of the New Testament. The authenticity of any book which entitles it to form part of the Sacred Canon depends upon its reception by the Church from the first. With respect to the book of the Revelation we have Justin Martyr (about a.d.140) writing as follows: "And further, there was a certain man with us whose name was John, one of the Apostles of Christ, who prophesied, by a Revelation that was made to him, that those who believed in our Christ should dwell a thousand years in Jerusalem, and that thereafter the general, and, in short, the eternal resurrection and judgment of all men should likewise take place" ("Dialogue with Trypho," sect.81). Now it is very remarkable that this is the only place in which Justin mentions an Apostle by name. Throughout his works which are extant he constantly refers to the Apostles, and the companions of the Apostles, but does not name any one of them; and this is the solitary place in which he refers to an Apostle by name. The ecclesiastical memory of Justin Martyr must have reached to the times of St. John himself. If he was martyred - say in or about 150 - he must have conversed with many middle aged or old men who were contemporary with the Apostle in his later years; so that it was impossible for him to have been mistaken as to the authorship of a work attributed to the Apostle. Then we have Irenaeus, about a.d. 170 or 180, that is, he lived within less than a century after the time to which early writers assign the date of the Apocalypse. I have now before me an index of his quotations from, or references to, Scripture, and from this I gather that he refers to the Apocalypse thirty-one times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of St. John the Divine: An Interpretation IF the Revelation of Saint John has any right to a place in the canon of the New Testament, it is reasonable to presume that its intention was to conform to that general purpose for which all divinely inspired Scripture is said to be given, namely, to be profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be perfect, thor oughly furnished unto all good works.
