Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Institution of the Sabbath Nor, to this do we consider it a valid answer to say The Church has departed from Christ's intention in other things; and therefore in this also may have been guilty of such a departure. For, those other departures began to take place hundreds of years after the Church had been left to meet, and move through, the corrupting in uence of the philosophies, and superstitions of the heathen world; and, as those departures grew wider and wider, they were marked with more and more of Christ's displeasure, and of a withdrawment of his favor, till, at last, they brought on his visible body the most direful of all plagues; whilst, on the contrary, the change in the day of the Sabbath took place almost under the very eye of Christ; was, in a short time, full and complete and has, from first to last, been marked by the almost visi ble smiles of the Saviour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Lectures on the Sabbath: Delivered by Request of the Society for the Better Observance of the Sabbath, in the Town Hall, Woolwich, in the Months of March and April, 1852 N ow, if we take these two periods together - the period before the giving of the law, -and the period that 1s measured by the New Testament dispensation, along with Old Testament times, which lie between them, we find a principle which, touching on either side the Sabbatic law, as embodied in the fourth com mandment, enables us to span the whole of time - the example of God in the original institution reaching onwards to the giving Of that law on Mount Sinai, and then the example of Christ at the introduction Of the New Testament dispensation for the change of the day, I say we find thus a principle, spanning the whole of time, and setting forth the Sabbath, like God's bow in the clouds, spanning the heavens, a blessed symbol Of God's gracious covenant in Christ with men, Of that blessed rest which is to be found in the once crucified, but now risen and glorified Redeemer, and which shall last till the Sabbath of a glorified church, and Of a glorified world shall dawn, and which proclaims each week, as it returns, God's Offer of that covenant Where fore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? And your labour for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear, and come unto me, hear, and your soul shall live and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies Of David. Isaiah lv. 2, 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath Institution: Traced and Defended in Its History and Changes Some regard the Sabbath as an Institution, as an appointment of God for-the religious improve ment Of the race - making a clear distinction be tween the appointment or Institution, and the time devoted to its Observance. Others regard the Sabbath as a particular day - as identical with a given day or measurement of time, and so they seem at least to contend for time-keeping rather than for an Institution proper. The latter keep the seventh day of the week, reckoning from the Jewish Sabbath, and after the manner of the Jews in beginning and ending their days with the ap pearance of the stars while the former appropri ate to the Institution the first day of the week, reckoning from the resurrection of Christ, and after the usual manner of mankind in the matter of beginning and ending the days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Upon the Origin, Perpetuity, Change, and Proper Observance, of the Sabbath But when did God institute the Holy Sabbath Those who are in the habit of reading and under standing the Scriptures according to the common rules of interpretation, will doubtless marvel that such a question should ever be asked. For can any thing, they will demand, be more explicit, than the passage just quoted? Surely there is no thing ambiguous, either in the words themselves, or in their connexion with the preceding narrative. The plain account is, that when God had finished the great work of creation, he rested from it on the very next, or seventh day and that then he blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it. Yes, we reply, this, according to common understanding, is just what the sacred penman asserts; nor do we believe that one man in a million, would think of putting any other construction upon the passage. Indeed, no one, so far as we know, ever denied this to be the most natural meaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath The following Argument in defence of the Sabbath was called forth by the discussions of the late Church, Ministry, and Sabbath Conven tion, so termed, in this city. A wish has been repeatedly expressed that it should be written out for publication. This has been done - but amid a pressure of other duties which has subjected the author to frequent interruptions, much couse quent delay, and some serious disadvantages in its accomplishment. In writing it out, som trains of thought have been introduced which were not presented in the Convention, and some, which were then merely hinted at, have been carried out. The Argument differs from the ordinary discussions of the subject, in that its strength is mainly expended on two points, which. As the means of uniting us in fellowship with God, and of recalling to our minds his creating power and redeeming love - as the symbol of that peace ful blessedness which awaits the faithful in the land of uninterrupted purity and rest-there is no appointment of Providence, and, no ordinance of religion, which point more directly to the present dignity of man, and his future destination to glory.
