Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 3 There are two ways indeed, in which the hostility of the Jews, and the divine judgments consequent upon it, might be considered as somewhat more closely connected with the benefit to the Gentiles - First, the effect of their hostility and persecution was to produce the more rapid and exten sive diffusion of the Gospel among the Gentiles. By it the disciples and the teachers of Christianity were driven from Jerusalem and Judea, to scatter the seed of the word of the Lord among the surrounding peoples, and in the in stances quoted from the Acts it appears, that the very refusal of the Jews was the occasion of turning to the Gentiles. - And Secondly, it is possible that in some instances, the judicial retribution sent on the Jews, being a fulfilment of prophecy, might contribute to the conviction, and so to the further bringing in, of the Gentiles. This, however, would only be in a very limited extent indeed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1 To a mind such as that of my late revered father, the epistle TO the romans could not fail to present peculiar attractions; and to the study of it he devoted a large measure of time and attention. Of such study these Lectures are a result. They were delivered to the people of his charge - most if not all of them twice - during the course of his ministry. It was his design to publish them, and they were in part prepared for the press. This is the main ground for their finding a place in this Series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 2 By spiritual death I mean the entire loss in the soul of those principles of holiness which fitted man originally for fellowship with God as his chief joy, his happiness, his life. It is death to all those spiritual sensibilities of holy love which constituted the blessedness of the paradisaical life while man remained in his innocence, and a consequent total incapacity for the functions and enjoyments of that life. By temporal death I mean, of course, the dissolution, by whatever means effected, of the soul and the body, and the corruption of the latter in the grave, its return to the dust from which it was taken. By death eternal, I understand what is called in Scripture "the second death," the everlasting misery of the future state. A few remarks will be necessary on each of these. I. Against the idea of spiritual death being included in the curse, two objections have been urged - (1.) It has been alleged that spiritual death is nothing more than sin, and that this is therefore to make sin its own penalty; and by supposing God to inflict it makes Him its author. But here there is a double mistake. Is there no difference between falling into sin, and being left, in consequence, to a permanently depraved state of soul, a state of alienation from God and of incapacity for enjoying Him? The only question is: - Whether, in consequence of the original transgression, the nature of man was left in this state? That it was, we formerly endeavoured at great length to prove, from Scripture and from facts. Now, if this was a consequence, what else could it be than a penal and judicial consequence? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle of Paul, the Apostle to the Romans You occasionally meet in the New Tes tament, with an express reference to a certain body of writings, which are desi nated by the term of Scriptures. E now apply this term to the whole Bible. But, in those days, it was restricted to that collection of pieces which makes up the Old Testament. For the new was only in the process of its formation, and was not yet completed; and it was not till some time after the evangelists wrote their nar ratives, and the apostles their communi cations, that they were athered into one volume, or made to stan in equal and co. Ordinate rank with the inspired books of the former dispensation. So that all which is said of the Scrip tures in the New Testament, must be re garded as the testimony of its authors to the value and importance of those writings which compose the Old Testament. And it would therefore appear from Paul's epistle to Timothy, that they are able to make us wise unto salvation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures, Explanatory and Practical: On the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans The Epistle, which it is the object of the fol lowing Lectures to explain, may be regarded as forming, in some respects, the most important part of the Sacred Writings. For though all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and we are bound to acknowledge the same divine autho rity in every portion of the sacred volume; yet it by no means derogates, either from the perfection of the Scriptures, or from the honour of that Spirit under whose immediate influence they were writ ten, to ascribe to some parts a superior excellence and importance, and to conceive of others as hav ing only a subordinate use. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prolegomena to St. Paul's Epistles to the Romans and the Ephesians I propose this term to lecture on the Epistle to the Romans, in itself an enormous subject. To deal properly with it would need not merely a longer term than this, but many terms. Even however in this unusually short term I hope that by rigorous selection of topics we may be able to get some substantial hold of the Epistle; and, owing to the peculiar position which it holds among St Paul's Epistles, even a very imperfect study of it will yield more instruction than a somewhat less imperfect study of, I believe we may say, any other single Epistle of st Paul would have done. In this case, perhaps more than usual, the benefit to be derived from attending lectures must be pro portional to the time and care spent upon the subject by members of the class in private work. The utmost that a lecturer can do is to supply suggestions which can be verified and followed up at home. Book The Epistle to the Romans

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle to the Romans: With Notes Critical and Practical As it has been the province of the Church to decide upon what books are to be accounted Holy Scripture, and what books are not, we must first glance over the testimony of the Church to the place of this Epistle in the Canon. Tracing the citations or references upwards, we find that Eusebius, born at the conclusion of the reign of Gallienus, writes: "The Epistles of Paul are fourteen, all well known and beyond doubt" (E. H. iii. c. 3); and a little further on he mentions that "the same Apostle in the addresses at the close of the Epistle to the Romans, has, among others, made mention also of Hermes," &c. Origen wrote a commentary on this Epistle, "which is preserved entire only in a loose Latin translation of Rufinus." Of the three great writers flourishing at the close of the second century -Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, and Tertullian - I find that, in an index of quotations I have now before me, Irenaeus quotes this Epistle alone above 70 times, Clement of Alexandria 114 times, and Tertullian 142 (and this in an index to only a part of his works). This Epistle is also cited in the letter of the Churches of Lyons and Vienna, in the words (quoting from the letter as given in Eusebius), "These coming in close conflict endured every species of reproach and torture. Esteeming what was deemed great but little, they hastened to Christ, showing in reality that the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us." It is included amongst the Pauline Epistles in the Canon of Muratori (about A.D. 170). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1: A Practical Exposition; (Chapters I-VIII) The method of exposition in this volume is the same as that pursued in its predecessor on the Epistle to the Ephesians. After a general introduction, each section of the Revised Version is taken, or in some cases two sections are taken together, and prefaced by an analysis or paraphrase, as seems most useful, and followed by further explanation of the main ideas or phrases which each section contains. Download or read book A Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans Classic Reprint written by Robert Verrell Foster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans This Commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Romans was written at the request of the Board of Publication whose imprint it bears. It was the desire of the board, as expressed by Dr. W. J. Darby, that I should base my work on the King James version of the epistle, and that it should little exceed a hundred thousand words, being only a handy commentary intended chiefly for those readers who, in all Churches, will ever be the majority. And yet it is hoped that the volume may not be without value to many ministers of the gospel, who may not often have opportunity to study those works which deal at greater length with questions of critical detail. Not only, however, was the previous intellectual prepara tion on the part of the reader for commentary study to be taken into consideration, but his purse as well; for if the book had been much larger it would also have cost much more, and hence while it might have done a greater good to the few, it would have done less to the many. Download or read book Commentary on St Paul s Epistle to the Romans Classic Reprint written by F. Godet and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-23 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans Coleridge calls the Epistle to the Romans the profoundest book in existence. Chrysostom had it read to him twice a week. Luther, in his famous preface, says This Epistle is the chief book of the New Testa ment, the purest gospel. It deserves not only to be known word for word by every Christian, but to be the subject of his meditation day by day, the daily bread of his soul. The more time one Spends on it, the more precious it becomes and the better it appears. Melanchthon, in order to make it perfectly his own, copied it twice with his own hand. It is the book which he expounded most frequently in his lectures. The Reforma tion was undoubtedly the work of the Epistle to the Romans, as well as of that to the Galatians; and the probability is that every great Spiritual revival in the church will be connected as effect and cause with a deeper understanding of this book. This observation unquestionably applies to the various religious awakenings which have successively marked the course of our century. The exposition of such a book is capable of boundless progress. In studying the Epistle to the Romans we feel ourselves at every word face to face with the unfathomable. Our experience is somewhat analogous to what we feel when contemplating the great masterpieces of mediaeval archi tecture, such, for example, as the Cathedral of Milan. We do not know which to admire most, the majesty of the whole or the finish of the details, and every look makes the discovery of some new perfection. And yet the excellence of the book with which we are about to be occupied should by no means discourage the expositor; it is much rather fitted to stimulate him. What book of the New Testament, says Meyer, in his preface to the fifth edition of his commentary, less entitles the expositor to spare his pains than this, the greatest and richest of all the apostolic works? Only it must not be imagined that to master its meaning nothing more is needed than the philological analysis of the text, or even the theological study of the contents. The true understanding of this masterpiece of the apostolic mind is reserved for those who approach it with the heart de scribed by Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount, the heart hungering and thirsting after righteousness. For what is the Epistle to the Romans 2 The offer of the righteousness of God to the man who finds himself stripped by the law of his own righteousness (i. To understand such a book we must yield ourselves to the current of the intention under which it was dic tated. Book To the Jew First or to the Jew at Last

Download or read book To the Jew First or to the Jew at Last written by Antoine XJ Fritz and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many missions to the Jewish people, such as Jews for Jesus, use Romans 1:16 as a proof text to encourage the evangelisation of the Jewish people as a priority: 'to the Jew first, and then to the Greek' (Jewish Missional Priority). Is this interpretation of the text legitimate? After considering when this priority first appeared, the author exposes and evaluates the arguments commonly used to promote it. His thorough exegesis of Romans 1:16-17 ultimately resolves the question. He takes the opportunity to explore some possible eschatological implications developed from Romans 9-11 and the parables of Jesus. Will the first also be the last?
