This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1 To a mind such as that of my late revered father, the epistle TO the romans could not fail to present peculiar attractions; and to the study of it he devoted a large measure of time and attention. Of such study these Lectures are a result. They were delivered to the people of his charge - most if not all of them twice - during the course of his ministry. It was his design to publish them, and they were in part prepared for the press. This is the main ground for their finding a place in this Series. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans, Vol. 1 IT is possible to conceive the face of our world over spread with a thick and midnight darkness, and without so much as a particle of light to alleviate it, from any one quarter of the firmament around us. In this case, it were of no avail to the people who live in it, that all of them were in possession of sound and perfect eyes. The organ of sight may be entire, and yet nothing be seen from the total absence of external light among the objects on every side of us. Or in other words, to bring about the perception of that which is without, it is not enough that we have the power of vision among men; but, in addition to this, there must be a visibility in the trees, and the houses, and the mountains, and the living creatures, which are now in the ordinary discernment of men. Book Commentary on St Paul s Epistle to the Romans Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1 Sacred criticism, which prepares for the exposition of the books of the Bible, has for its object to elucidate the various questions relating to their origin; and of those questions there are always some which can only be resolved with the help of the exegesis itself. The problem of the composition of the Epistle to the Romans includes several questions of this kind. We could not answer them in this introduction without anticipating the work of exegesis. It will be better, therefore, to defer the final solution of them to the con cluding chapter of the commentary. But there are others the solution of which is perfectly obvious, either from the simple reading of the Epistle, or from certain facts established by church history. It cannot be other than advantageous to the exposition to gather together here the results presented by these two sources, which are fitted to shed light on the origin of our Epistle. It will afford an opportunity at the same time of explaining the different views on the subject which have arisen in the course of ages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Works, Vol. 1 This is something more than the mere didactic affirmation of a speculative or scholastic Theology. It contains within its bosom the rudiments of a most important practical direction to every reader and every inquirer. If I do not see, not because there is a darkness around me, but because there is a blindness upon me adhering in the shape of a personal attribute, it were a matter of great practical account to ascertain if this defect do not stand associated with other defects in my character and mind which are also personal. And when we read of the way in which the moral and intellectual are blended together in the doctrines of the New Testament - how one apostle affirms that he who hateth his brother is in darkness; and another, that he who lacketh certain virtues is blind, and cannot see afar off; and another, that men who did not up to what they knew award the glory and the gratitude to God, had their foolish hearts darkened. Book The Epistle to the Romans

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle to the Romans: With Notes Critical and Practical As it has been the province of the Church to decide upon what books are to be accounted Holy Scripture, and what books are not, we must first glance over the testimony of the Church to the place of this Epistle in the Canon. Tracing the citations or references upwards, we find that Eusebius, born at the conclusion of the reign of Gallienus, writes: "The Epistles of Paul are fourteen, all well known and beyond doubt" (E. H. iii. c. 3); and a little further on he mentions that "the same Apostle in the addresses at the close of the Epistle to the Romans, has, among others, made mention also of Hermes," &c. Origen wrote a commentary on this Epistle, "which is preserved entire only in a loose Latin translation of Rufinus." Of the three great writers flourishing at the close of the second century -Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, and Tertullian - I find that, in an index of quotations I have now before me, Irenaeus quotes this Epistle alone above 70 times, Clement of Alexandria 114 times, and Tertullian 142 (and this in an index to only a part of his works). This Epistle is also cited in the letter of the Churches of Lyons and Vienna, in the words (quoting from the letter as given in Eusebius), "These coming in close conflict endured every species of reproach and torture. Esteeming what was deemed great but little, they hastened to Christ, showing in reality that the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us." It is included amongst the Pauline Epistles in the Canon of Muratori (about A.D. 170). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book An Exposition of the Epistle to the Romans Vol 1 written by Robert Haldane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1: With Remarks on the Commentaries of Dr. Macknight, Profesor Moses Stuart, and Professor Tholuck This epistle has been equally an object of attention to those who admit the authority of Scripture, but follow their own wisdom in form ing their system of religious doctrine. Salvation by grace, and salvation by works, are so incon sistent with each other, that it might well be supposed no attempt would ever be made to bring theui into harmony. Still the attempt has been made. Human wisdom cannot receive the doctrine of the Epistle to the Romans, and men professing Christianity, cannot deny it to be a part of Scripture. What, then, is to be done? A compromise and peace are proclaim ed between the wisdom of man and the revela tion of God. All the ingenuity of Mr Locke, one of thefmost acute metaphysicians that ever appeared, has been exerted to bring Paul into accordance with human science. He and many others have laboured to give a view of this epistle, that may reconcile human merit with divine grace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans: With Notes A glance at the following pages will show that I enter into no competition with those who have sought to provide the students of Scripture with large materials of theological information, or to guide them through a labyrinth of conflicting interpreta tions. These are important objects, and learned and able men in our own country are pursuing them. But mine has been a different and a humbler aim. I have set before myself the case of readerswho re quire rather results than processes of investigation, and have sought not so much to argue and to discuss as to interpret and to teach.
