THE HERESIES CONDEMNED IN THIS EPISTLE. THE DOCTRINES OF GRACE TURNED TO LICENTIOUSNESS--THE REGAL AUTHORITY OF THE REDEEMER DENIED. The first part of this verse, relating to the character of the heretics denounced by the Apostle, having been discussed in the preceding Lecture, we now come to consider the peculiar nature of the heresies which they are represented as maintaining. It is stated that these "ungodly men turned the grace of our God into lasciviousness; and denied the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ." There is reason to suppose that this description refers to one and the same system, although it appears, at first sight, to involve two distinct and separate charges; but, in order that we may have it in our power to bring out the substance of the statement more fully, it will be necessary to examine both points in detail. I. In reference to the first part of the statement, the heretics in question are charged with the guilt of "turning the grace of God into lasciviousness." By "the grace of God," considered literally, is meant the inherent goodness of God; but this goodness, as displayed towards sinners who have lost all title to the exercise of it, resolves itself into mercy, or free unmerited favour. While the grace of God is shown in the arrangemements of providence--in the merciful provision which he makes for the temporal wants and external welfare of man--the grand exhibition of it is that which is found in the gospel, wherein he has provided for their spiritual exigencies, as lost and helpless sinners. Hence that revelation of mercy is designated, by way of eminence, "the gospel of the grace of God." It is sometimes called the grace of God itself, as containing the great and crowning manifestation of...

Book Once Saved Always Saved

Download or read book Once Saved Always Saved written by David Pawson and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority Evangelical view is that once someone has accepted Christ as Saviour they are guaranteed salvation. But is it safe to assume that once we are saved, we are saved for always? David Pawson investigates this through biblical evidence, historical figures such as Augustine, Luther and Wesley, and evangelical assumptions about grace and justification, divine sovereignty and human responsibility. He asks whether something more than being born again is required so that our inheritance is not lost. This book helps us decide whether ‘once saved, always saved’ is real assurance or a misleading assumption. The answer will have profound effects on the way we live and disciple others.

Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Book A Theology of James Peter and Jude

Download or read book A Theology of James Peter and Jude written by Peter H. Davids and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Peter Davids offers a comprehensive study of the General or Catholic Epistles of James, 1-2 Peter, and Jude, which are often insufficiently covered in more general New Testament introductions, theologies, and surveys. Before discussing a theology of each of the four letters, Davids first deals with their common aspects—their shared background in the Greco-Roman world and a similar Christology, view of the source of sin, and eschatology—thus justifying their being treated together. In the chapters that follow, Davids embarks upon a theological reading of each letter informed by its social-rhetorical understanding—what they meant in the context of their original cultural settings—including: a survey of recent scholarship, a discussion of relevant introductory issues, a thematic commentary, a treatment of important theological themes, and a discussion of the place of the letter in the biblical canon and its contribution to New Testament theology. The Biblical Theology of the New Testament (BTNT) series provides upper college and seminary-level textbooks for students of New Testament theology, interpretation, and exegesis. Pastors and discerning theology readers alike will also benefit from this series. Written at the highest level of academic excellence by recognized experts in the field, the BTNT series not only offers a comprehensive exploration of the theology of every book of the New Testament, including introductory issues and major themes, but also shows how each book relates to the broad picture of New Testament theology.
