Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of God at WorkCharles Finney’s ministry led to some of the most amazing revivals that have ever occurred in the United States or England. In Holy Spirit Revivals, Finney recalls those events, revealing the secrets that led to the mass conversions of lost souls in his meetings throughout upstate New York, as well as in Boston, Philadelphia, and London. Finney was unafraid of offending delicate ears by addressing the problem of sin head-on, and his dedication to prayer, his understanding of Scripture, and his radical reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit are a great template for believers today. This treasured account of one of the greatest Christian preachers in history is an outstanding resource for anyone interested in seeing a revival of faith in the church.

Charles Finney—who shook up nineteenth-century America with his preaching, earned the title Father of Modern Revivalism, and became the forerunner of revivalists like Dwight L. Moody and Billy Graham—knew a thing or two about revival. And he claimed it began not in the emotion of the masses but in the repentance of the individual. This new journal edition of a spiritual classic invites readers to record their reflections, thoughts, and prayers in response to Finney’s fiery words on how to experience revival. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a Presbyterian preacher in the 1800's this book is revered by some and considered heresy by others. The arguments given in Finney's various lectures will cause many to consider their own positions and seek to justify what they believe. Finney deals with many different subjects going from moral law, government, love, depravity and other diverse but important subjects. Regardless of what your own position on these subjects are, this work is a good masterpiece of religious thought but the ideas and reasons for Finney's arguments may leave theologians wondering if such thinking is something we should be keeping around.

Download or read book The Backslider in Heart written by Charles Finney and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Classic book - The Backslider in Heart -- introduces and orients the reader to critical biblical/theological thinking from a biblical perspective. Finney's presentation is written with a clarity that fosters biblical thought and facilitates Bible comprehension. You won't be disappointed. While staunch Calvinists believed in the perseverance of the saints, Finney believed that a Christian could "backslide," or turn back from the Christian life and revert to a life of sin. In this address, Finney clarifies his theology of backsliding, first explaining what it is not, then what it is. He describes what a backslidden life might look like, and what consequences living in sin bring upon the sinner. Finney is consistently one of the best Bible scholars and this one is at the top of his writing. He's bold in his writings but solid in Scripture. "It's impossible to measure the influence of Finney over God's church. His works remain in print and are widely read, which shouldn't surprise us. He is considered one of the most outstanding pastoral, evangelistic writers on practical and devotional themes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Submit yourselves therefore to God."--James 4:7 WHAT CONSTITUTES TRUE SUBMISSION? 1. If any of you are deceived in regard to your hopes, and have built on a false foundation, the fundamental error in your case was your embracing what you thought was the gospel plan of salvation from selfish motives. Your selfish hearts were unbroken. This is the source of your delusion, if you are deceived. If your selfishness was subdued, you are not deceived in your hope. If it was not, all your religion is vain, and your hope is vain. 2. If any of you are deceived, and have a false hope, you are in the utmost danger of reviving your old hope, whenever you are awakened to consider your condition. It is a very common thing for such professors, after a season of anxiety and self-examination, to settle down again on the old foundation. The reason is, their habits of mind have become fixed in that channel, and therefore, by the laws of mind it is difficult to break into a new course. It is indispensable, therefore, if you ever mean to get right, that you should see clearly that you have hitherto been wholly wrong, so that you need not multiply any more the kind of efforts that have deceived you heretofore. 3. The great mass of professors of religion have, I fear, fallen entirely short of conceiving rightly of the nature of true religion, and it is high time that the subject were thoroughly investigated, and that the Lord's prayer in its true spirit and import should be deeply pondered by the Church, and the inquiry should be raised, what is implied in the sincere offering of this prayer to God. Unless these fundamental inquiries are started and pressed, until the Church come to an intelligent understanding of them, false hopes will continue to be cherished, and thousands of professing Christians will go down to hell.
