Book Lectures on Psycho Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Psycho Physiology Classic Reprint written by J. Martin Littlejohn and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Psycho-Physiology We begin today a course in Psychology for the first time in this institution. It marks an important departure in the curriculum of a medical school. In very few medical schools in this country or else where dowe find this subject dealt with. And yet it is a most important branch of knowledge. Its introduction marks the recognition of the unity of man in his tripartite being of body, soul and spirit. If medicine - I use it in the wide sense defined in the beginning-of Physiology - professes to preserve the health and life of man and to cure diseased conditions that threaten to destroy his health and life, then it must recognize that the materia medica of medical science must apply not alone to purely bodily and material elements of life but also to that other and not less important part of the human system: the pychic nature. Recognizing that Osteopathy wishes to be a perfect as well as an exact science, we introduce into our curriculum the study of the mind, mental conditions and operations and mental phenomena because these have an important bearing upon the health and the comfort of life. Modern psychology has been chiefly developed in Great Britain and Germany and the United States. There have been three lines along which psychology has developed. (1) Along the empirical line, based upon so called experience. (2) Speculative, chiefly in Germany, originated by the philosophy of Kant who made reason the central element in psychology. His conception of reason is centralized in the imperative of duty laid down by reason as the basis of all intellectual and moral development. (3) Scientific, this represents the new movement in psycholog-y which received its first and main impetus from the evolution school of philosophy. Book Ontology after Philosophical Psychology

Download or read book Ontology after Philosophical Psychology written by Michela Bella and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ontology after Philosophical Psychology addresses the question of William James’s continuity of consciousness, with a view to its possible actualizations. In particular, Michela Bella critically delineates James's discourse. In the wake of Darwin's theory of evolution at the end of the nineteenth century, James's reflections emerged in the field of physiological psychology, where he developed for the case for a renewed epistemology and a new metaphysical framework to help us understand the most interesting theories and scientific discoveries about the human mind. Bella’s analysis of the theme of continuity makes it possible to appreciate, both historically and theoretically, the importance of James's gradual transition from making observations of experimental psychology on the continuity of thought to developing an epistemological and ontological argument that continuity is a characteristic of experience and reality. This analysis makes it possible both to clarify James's position in relation to his historical context and to highlight the most original results of his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Many major ideas have been borne out [of his theories] and are still relevant today.” —Huffington Post One of famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s most prominent ideas was that of the id, the ego, and the super-ego—the three main factors behind the workings of the human mind. Freud claimed these components of the human psyche controlled all processes of personality, behaviors, and traits in a person. The Id was a person’s most basic and impulsive instincts—the ones that feed into our deepest desires and physical needs. The Super-Ego was the opposite of the id. This component controlled our highest morals and standards, operating through our conscience and making us desire to be our most ideal-selves. The piece in the middle is the Ego. The ego mediates between the id and realities of the world around us, while being supervised (and guilted) by the super-ego. In this new edition of his book, The Ego and the Id, Sigmund Freud delves deeper into the concepts of the human mind and the results of the conflicts and workings between them.
