Book excerpt: Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Download or read book First Principles of Moral Science written by T. R. Birks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Moral Science: A Course of Lectures Delivered in the University of Cambridge This small volume contains the substance of a first course of Lectures, delivered in October and November 1872, in partial fulfilment of the honourable trust a few months earlier confided to me, after the lamented death of Professor Maurice. The subjects formally assigned to the Knigktbridge Professor are Moral Philosophy, Casuistry, and Moral Theology. The first and third of these scarcely need any exposition of their meaning. The second was viewed by Dr Whewell as an historical term, now superseded by the more general and comprehensive phrase, Moral Philosophy. On the other hand Professor Maurice, while ho looks on the solution of cases of conscience as impossible, applies the name of Casuistry to that subjective side of Moral Science, which enforces the claims of the personal "I," the individual conscience. This subject, though highly important in itself, does not seem to me, whether in history or by etymology, to answer to the name. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Moral Science: Delivered Before the Lowell Institute, Boston Philosophy investigates causes, unities, and ends. Of these it is the last two that are chiefly considered in the following lectures. Happy, it has been said, is he who knows the causes of things. But in a world where there are so many apparent discrepancies both natural and moral, he must be more happy who knows the arrangement of things into systems, and sees how all these systems go to make up one greater system and to promote a common end. An investigation of causes respects the past; of unities and ends, the present and the future. Oi these the latter are more intimste to as, and he who can trace the principle of unity by which nature is harmonized with herself, and man with nature.
