Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All those who have at any time given clinical demonstrations on disease must have felt the desire to impress more firmly on their hearers the remembrance of what they have seen than is possible in an ordinary lecture. After many attempts to arrive at this in some other way, I have now tried to preserve, in a measure, the impressions of a term’s clinical work in the form of the lectures contained in the following pages. In my descriptions I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to follow the actual course of the lectures. Naturally, not only must this work give up all claim to the actual presentation of the patients, for which the student can only be compensated by personal experience in the hospital, but we must also forego the great help to teaching afforded by the assistant’s little awkwardnesses and blunders, which so often serve to point out to the teacher the right method of instruction. On the other hand, the material can in this way be worked up more concisely, more systematically, and more completely than is generally possible in the hospital. In these lectures I have always kept the diagnostic point of view in the foreground, being convinced of its fundamental importance, not only to our scientific ideas, but also as affecting the advice we shall have to give in our medical practice, and the methods of treatment to be adopted by us. In my opinion, what the student ought to learn in the hospital, besides the examination of patients, is not text-book knowledge, which he can acquire just as well, or better, at home, but how to turn his observations to account, and the careful judgment of any given case. These lectures, then, must not in any way be looked upon as a textbook of alienism. Their aim will be far better attained if they prove of some value as a guide to the clinical investigation of the insane. The examples of disease, which for obvious reasons have been taken from entirely separate years, and some of which have been utilized elsewhere, do not profess in their brief outline to be scientific records. Nevertheless, each individual case is delineated with the greatest possible truth to life, while the diagnostic developments are almost entirely taken directly from notes upon clinical demonstrations. Inquiries as to the further history of the patients were carried on, as far as possible, up to going to press, and, for the most part, were only added after the whole was complete." While recognising the value of the work as a whole, I do not see any reason for altering the Classification of Mental Diseases which I have drawn up in accordance with the teachings of Professor Kraepelin. Book An Outline of Psychiatry in Clinical Lectures

This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a collection of Carl Wenicke’s lectures on neuropsychiatry translated into English for the first time. Beginning with basic concepts about normal brain function, the book moves to clinical topics, dealing first with chronic mental disorders and 'paranoid states', and then to the more complex area of acute mental disorders. Many of the featured topics are still clinically relevant, and matters of contemporary debate. Carl Wernicke is one of the pioneers of neurology and psychiatry; clinicians, researchers and historians will find this of great interest.

The topics discussed include ischaemic heart disease, peptic ulcers, bronchial asthma, renal failure, endocrine disorders and ageing as well as neuropsychiatry. There is also an account of selected aspects of severe subnormality, concentrating on the practical management of the severely handicapped child and adult. Throughout this volume the contributors provide a clinically relevant account of their topics. The volume will continue to hold value as a comprehensive survey of the medical history of mental disorders associated with somatic illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lecture Notes: Psychiatry takes a novel and common sense approach to psychiatry. It is written mainly for medical students and junior doctors, although anyone wanting a concise account of the principles of clinical psychiatry will find the book a useful resource. The book emphasizes how psychiatry is not only a specialty, but an essential part of general medical practice. It starts with a clear description of psychiatric assessment, followed by brief but comprehensive accounts of all the important disorders, their causes and treatment. It provides an up-to-date and evidence-based approach that integrates the three core elements of psychiatry: biology, psychology and sociology. Each chapter ends with summary points for revision, and the book includes a series of multiple-choice questions with answers. “…I found this book useful because of its relative simplicity: I was able to use it to understand the core course content in its simplest terms without getting lost in the enormousness of the speciality.” Barts and The London Pre-publication reviews "…an essential read for medical students and mental health trainees” “…concise, readable…altogether a much better read than the usual dense texts of psychiatry,” "...the chapter on the clinical appraisal of patients is excellent. I will use it in exams as well as in the clinic"

Book Standard Electroencephalography in Clinical Psychiatry

Download or read book Standard Electroencephalography in Clinical Psychiatry written by Nash N. Boutros and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise overview of the possible clinical applications of standard EEG in clinical psychiatry. After a short history, the book describes the physiologic basis of the EEG signal, then reviews the principles of EEG in terms of technical backgrounds and requirements, EEG recording and signal analysis, with plentiful illustrations of the most frequent biological or technical artefacts. Normal EEG patterns and waveforms for easy reference are clearly presented, before the detailed description of abnormal patterns. With the basic information in hand, the reader progresses to an account of the role of EEG in the diagnostic work up in psychiatry, covering nonconvulsive status epilepticus, frontal lobe seizures and non-epileptic seizures. The clinical application of EEG in both childhood and adult disorders follows, including many case vignettes. The effects of psychotropic drugs on EEG are highlighted. The book closes with a discussion of currently available certification venues for Clinical Neurophysiology along with limitations of each venue. It calls for the development of training guidelines and certification processes specific to Psychiatric Electrophysiology. The material is clearly presented throughout, with plenty of figures, tables with summaries of relevant findings, flow diagrams for diagnostic work-up, boxes with learning points, and short lists of key references. We fully expect the book will become the standard teaching source for psychiatry residents and fellows, as well as a useful resource for practising psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. Praise for the book: "This distinguished group of editors has put together chapters that represent an excellent practical handbook on electroencephalography in clinical psychiatry, now a very important topic. I highly recommend it not only to psychiatrists, but also to anyone interested in neuroscience." John R. Hughes, DM (Oxon), MD, PhD, Professor of Neurology, University of Illinois Medical Center, at Chicago, Illinois, USA
