Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 2 of 4 When we speak of truth as one of his perfections, we as sume, that the communications which have been made by him to men accord with the nature of things, and are genuine ex pressions of his views and intentions. Falsehood consists in designed misrepresentation of the subject of discourse, and in creating expectations which we do not mean to realize, in affirming that that is which is not, and that we will do what we have resolved not to do. There are different ways in which God has made declarations to us; by our senses, by reason, and by revelation. On each of these we shall bestow some observations and with respect to the last, in which we are so deeply concerned, I shall consider the doctrines which it proposes to our faith, the promises which awaken our hopes, the threatenings which are addressed to our fears, and shew that these, as well as the invitations, entreaties, and expostu lations with which the Scriptures abound, are characterised by veracity and sincerity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 2 of 2 Predictions of the Messiah prior to the Appearance of Christ - Their Import - Evidence that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah. Ive have seen that Jesus Christ is the Surety and Mediator of the New Covenant; and, in speaking of him in these characters, it was impossible to avoid references to the mysterious constitution of his person. This, however, is a subject so important, as to be entitled to distinct consideration, both be cause it is the foundation upon which the whole scheme of redemption de pends, and because some men of corrupt minds have, in all ages, and in various forms, exerted themselves to overthrow it. But, before we enter upon it, it will be proper to attend to the notices which were given of the Saviour to the church prior to his manifestation in the flesh, and then to show that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Encyloaedia of Theology, Vol. 2 The Christian religion, which forms the confession of the Church and the subject of theology, is given to the Church and to theology in the revelation of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus appears in the midst of His own people as the Sent of God, as the Messiah or Christ, by whom a new religious life is to be founded among men. As soon as He made known among those around by word and deed the fulness of the divine life which dwelt within Him, His personality began to exercise a mighty influence upon those of His contemporaries who recognised in Him the Sent of God, and who, believing in Him, and in the spirit which they had received from Him, had become His followers. Like every other founder of a religion, Christ is also the founder of a Church. He Himself and His first disciples form the primitive Christian Church. After the death of Jesus, commissioned by their Master and urged on by their own zeal, the first disciples, and soon also others as well, won to be labourers together with Christ, spread the knowledge of Christ among ever-widening circles. Download or read book Lectures on Christian Theology Classic Reprint written by George Christian Knapp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Christian Theology This was a state of things which Spener de plored. Others before him, especially pious lay men, had noticed these evils, but had withdrawn, like the mystics of a former period, and sought in private contemplation that satisfaction of their spiritual wants which they could not obtain from the learned jargon of the pulpit; or if, like An dreas and Arndt, they had lifted up a voice of rem onstrance against the prevailing disorders, it had been drowned in the noise of angry pole mics. But the reputation and influence of Spener were too great to allow his remonstrances to pass unnoticed. Without aiming at the name, he performed the work of a reformer. In the unpretending form of a preface to an edition of Arndt's Sermons, he published in 1675 his Pia Desidert'a, in which he urged the necessity of amending the prevailing mode of instruction and preaching. It was his great object to divert attention from the symbols, and direct it to the scriptures. He wished every student to derive his system for himself directly from the Bible; and to feel and enjoy the truths thus learned, rather than contend about them; and especially he wished the teachers in the universities, and the preachers in the desk, abandoning for ever their foolish questions and subtle dialectics, to labour to promote the solid instruction and the true piety of those committed to their charge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures in Divinity, Vol. 2 With this impression of the importance Of the subject, I proceed to analyse the Opinions concerning the Person of Christ. I do not propose to follow the order Of time, because there is some difficulty in ascertaining the dates of particular opinions, because the order in which they arose is not always very material, and because the frequent revival'of 'old opinions in new systems would render a chronology of them full of repetitions. Neither do I propose to fatigue your attention with the useless uninteresting detail of all the extravagant conceits broached by particular men, or of the minute shades of difference among those who agreed in their general system. I Shall furnish you with the information that is'of - real importance, by bringing forward the three great systems upon this subject. Their features are strong ly marked and clearly discriminated, and they ap pear to comprehend all the variety Of which the subject admits, because the several opinions which have at some times been exploded and at other times revived, are always reducible to one or other Of these three systems.
