El esquema que sigue esta obra se inicia con el estudio del desarrollo de las relaciones internacionales como disciplina científica, como medio de descubrir su sentido y alcance en el contexto actual de las ciencias sociales. Labor que se complementa con el estudio crítico de las principales concepciones teóricas de las relaciones internacionales, desde el realismo político hasta la investigación sobre la paz y las futuras alternativas al mundo actual. Con ello se clarifica el panorama de las distintas opciones y se sientan las bases para el desarrollo de la propia concepción del autor, que es objeto de exposición en el resto de la obra.
