Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning Curves is a single dad, enemies to lovers, plus-size/curvy romcom with a teacher everyone wished they had in school and a swoon-worthy dad who would do anything for his daughter. To Spencer, women only left pain and destruction in their wake. The only good thing that came from his ex was his daughter Annabelle. And right now, his only focus was making sure she was taken care of and was getting the help she needed with her learning disabilities. Even if that meant moving to a new town and starting over. Ellie spent her childhood being judged and bullied because of her learning disabilities. Joke's on them because she's now the top special education teacher in her area. She's extremely protective of her kids, even if that means going toe-to-toe with their parents. See, Ellie totally had her life together. Well, kind of. Maybe… Okay, really, she's a word-vomiting, curvy, hot mess who hasn't had a date in years with a diva of a dog who's determined to get a second, third, and fourth dinner every day. But that was fine. It was always fine. Until one disastrous parent-teacher conference with her new student's father turned her world upside down. Now she couldn't get the agitating single dad out of her mind no matter how hard she tried.

What would student experience look like if we integrated silence and feeling with empirical analysis? The book follows Molly Beauregard and her students on their intellectual and spiritual journey over the course of a semester in her class, "Consciousness, Creativity, and Identity." Interweaving personal stories, student writing, and Beauregard's responses, along with recommendations for further reading and a research appendix, it makes the case for the transformative power of consciousness-centered education. Written in a warm, engaging voice that reflects Beauregard's teaching style, Tuning the Student Mind provides an accessible, step-by-step template for other educators, while inviting readers more broadly to reconnect with the joy of learning in and beyond the classroom.

When Sophie can't solve a math puzzle, she feels upset and inadequate. "I CAN'T DO IT!" she shouts, expressing the frustration all of us feel when we try and fail. Will she ever be "smart" like her sister? Maybe she isn't smart at all.Luckily Sophie's teacher steps in. What does it mean to be smart? Using current, popular "mindset" techniques, Sophie's class is taught that we get smarter when we exercise our brains, such as when we work harder at solving a puzzle. Struggling to solve a problem doesn't mean "I can't do it!" Sophie and her classmates just can't do it... yet! Readers will cheer when Sophie finally prevails, and at the end of the day, she's confident and optimistic. At home, Sophie uses her new technique to help her dad solve a carpentry puzzle. In this third book about Sophie, Molly Bang again helps children deal with a challenging everyday issue, providing an opening to ask: What do you do when you think, "I can't!"?

Book Preparing for College and University Teaching

Download or read book Preparing for College and University Teaching written by Joanna Gilmore and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a guide for designing professional development programs for graduate students. The teaching competencies framework presented here can serve as the intended curriculum for such programs. The book will also be an excellent resource for evaluating programs, and will be an excellent resource for academics who study graduate students. This book presents the work of the Graduate Teaching Competencies Consortium to identify, organize, and clarify the competencies that graduate students need to teach effectively when they join the professoriate. To achieve this goal, the Consortium developed a framework of 10 teaching competencies organized around three overarching questions:• What do graduate students need to achieve by the end of their graduate education to be successful teacher-scholars?• What do graduate students need to understand about higher education to have successful careers as educators?• What do graduate students need to do to be successful teachers during their graduate student careers?Although much work has been done to identify the competencies of effective teachers in higher education, only a small portion of this work has been conducted with graduate student instructors. This is an important area of research given that graduate students are critical in the higher education academic pipeline. Nationally, graduate students teach between 25% and 50% of courses offered at the undergraduate level. Graduate student teaching is also critical because during early teaching experiences teachers establish a teaching style and set of teaching skills, which will endure as graduate students enter the professoriate. It is important to develop a teaching competency framework that is specific to graduate student instructors as they often have unique needs and roles as teachers. For example, graduate student instructors are in the unique position of becoming experts in their field concurrent with learning to teach. Moreover, as many professional development programs for graduate student instructors evolve based upon factors such as available resources and perceived needs of graduate students, this framework will be a useful aid for thoughtfully designing strategic, evidence-based, comprehensive professional development opportunities and programs.
