Book The Importance of Organizational Learning in Change Processes

Download or read book The Importance of Organizational Learning in Change Processes written by Bastian Krawinkel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-12-06 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 1.1, European Business School - International University Schloß Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel, language: English, abstract: During the last decades, the marketplace for organizations developed gradually from a push market into a pull market. In contrast to the environment years before, where demand was high and supply scarce, today’s situation is characterized by an overflow of products whose amount is more than huge enough to satisfy the demand. The resulting customer expectations, as well as the intense international competition, depict an immense challenge for the flexibil-ity of an organization which is operating in this environment. As a consequence of the evolved threats, organizations are forced to adjust quickly and appropriately to new circum-stances in order to remain competitive (Alas, 2007; Appelbaum, St.Pierre, & Glavas, 1998, p. 43). Recently the perception of the term organization changed towards the definition given by the new system theory which was mainly proposed by Luhmann (2000). While previous defini-tions focused on an organization as being the sum of its single parts, the new system theory perceives it as the manifestation of the communication between its members. In this context, Simon (2007) points out that, as any other system, an organization primarily aims at securing its survival. As an organization is constituted by the communication between its members it has to remain competitive in order to keep the ability to pay its employees without whom communication would not take place. Only if this fundamental need is secured, the focus can shift to concerns going beyond the prior goal of staying alive (pp. 32-33). Thus, as already mentioned earlier, it is crucial for an organization to adapt appropriately to changing circum-stances. When doing so newly retrieved information has to be evaluated among the members and subsequently transformed into action. This processing of information can as well be referred to as organizational learning. In the following this term paper aims at investigating the main elements of the process of organizational learning and identifies characteristics of diverging outcomes of the processing of information. Furthermore, it is analyzed what fundamental circumstances have to be fulfilled for the procedure of organizational learning to result in sustainable organizational change.

Book Current Practices in Workplace and Organizational Learning

Download or read book Current Practices in Workplace and Organizational Learning written by Bente Elkjaer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central assumption that guides this book is that research and practice about learning at the workplace has recently lost its critical edge. This book explores what has happened to workplace learning and organizational learning and studies what has replaced it. In addition, the book discusses to what extend there are reasons to revitalize it. Today, themes such as ‘innovation’, ‘co-creation’ and ‘knowledge sharing’ seem to have become preferred and referred to as theoretical fields as well as fields of practice. In several chapters of this book it is argued that the critical power of learning could be regained by starting a new discussion of how these new fields of practice can be substantiated by topics such as learning arrangements, learning mechanisms, and learning strategies. Hence, the aim of this book is to both advance and recapture our knowledge of learning in today’s increasingly complex world of work and organizing. The contributions in this work do so by revisiting classic research on workplace and organizational learning and discussing how insights from this body of literature evokes new meaning. It sets the stage for new agendas and rethinks current practices that are entangled in activities such as innovation, co-creation, knowledge sharing or other currently widespread fields of practice.

Book Organizational Learning Capability

Download or read book Organizational Learning Capability written by Arthur K. Yeung and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational learning matters now more than ever. In today's hypercompetitive business environment, successful executives must be able to discover opportunities, face problems, and pursue innovative ideas, then turn those ideas into action throughout an organization. Based on both empirical research and practice experience, this book gives managers the tools to do just that. Organizational learning capability is the capacity to generate and generalize ideas with impact. Managers generate new ideas in four basic ways: experimentation, in which organizations learn by trying many new products and processes; continuous improvement, in which they learn by constantly improving what they have done before and mastering each step in a process before moving on to other processes; knowledge acquisition, in which they learn by encouraging individuals and teams to acquire new knowledge continuously; and benchmarking, in which they learn by studying how other groups do things and trying to adapt their techniques. Each learning types leads to different performance consequences. Managers must also be able to generalize information through technology, movement of people, incentives, and learning processes. By both generating and generalizing ideas with impact, managers have a blueprint for making learning happen. Learning may not be sustained, however, unless it is congruent with the larger business context--the organization's strategy and culture and the industry's characteristics. Unfortunately, just as organizations develop learning capabilities, they also suffer from certain learning disabilities. This book outlines common disabilities and the means to overcome them. The authors assist practicing managers by providing several examples of successful and unsuccessful organizations and describing the ways in which they have helped organizations improve learning capability in their consulting practices. Based on detailed case studies, a review of past literature, and data gleaned from a worldwide survey of companies,Organizational Learning Capability is an accessible and useful guide for managers competing in the information economy. This book turns abstract ideas into practice, offers tools that managers can use, and presents a simple yet profound road map for making learning a reality.

Book Organizational learning processes in international strategic alliances

Download or read book Organizational learning processes in international strategic alliances written by Thomas Weitlaner and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2001-08-03 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: In recent years, we have witnessed a surge of alliances among major corporations throughout the whole world; hardly a day goes by without announcements in the business press of new linkages, partnerships, or alliances. They increasingly involve partners from different parts of the world, are cross-cultural, and don ́t seem to have a limit. My curiosity for this phenomenon was captured by the course Collaborative Strategies in International Business , which I frequented at the Aarhus School of Business, Denmark in 1995. One of the articles, that made up the course literature was Gary Hamel ́s Competition for Competence and Interpartner Learning within International Strategic Alliance (1991). In this influential paper he investigated which role International Strategic Alliances might play in effecting a partial redistribution of skills amongst partners. Furthermore, he found several determinants that influenced the success of interpartner learning. This study was the point of departure for my work. I just wanted to dig deeper into this topic and find answers to the following questions: What are the motives behind the increasing number of alliance formation? What role does the increasingly popular Resource-Based View of the firm play? How do Organizational Learning processes take shape? Which factors influence the success of learning processes in Strategic Alliances? What are then the managerial implications for the management of collaborative ventures? In the following chapters I try to find some answers to these questions. To this aim my paper will be organized in the following way: In Chapter 2 I will try to explain what a Strategic Alliance is and put forward some definitions. We will see, that this term comprises quite a lot of different forms of interfirm cooperation, from the classical form of Joint Venture to Joint Product Development arrangements. Furthermore, I will discuss some special features of the modern forms of collaboration: They are increasingly formed between direct rivals and also across national boundaries. Chapter 3 will give an overview of the drivers, that are responsible for the steadily increasing number of alliances. Globalization will be subdivided into four aspects, that have considerable influence on firms and their manager s ways of thinking and acting. The main point of this chapter will be that Strategic Alliances are one way of coping with the challenges that are posed by the [...]

Book Evolutionary Learning in Strategy Project Systems

Download or read book Evolutionary Learning in Strategy Project Systems written by Antonio Calabrese and published by Project Management Institute. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT DOES A SUCCESSFUL KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT PRACTITIONER DO?Evolutionary Learning in Strategy-Project Systems explores the gap between the theory and practice of knowledge management in organizations and analyzes how learning happens and how knowledge is created. The authors take a practitioner-driven approach, one that unites organizational strategy with the learning of organizational lessons—the kind of knowledge management that enhances project performance and ultimately business success.Through a survey of the literature and an analysis of original case-study research, Evolutionary Learning in Strategy-Project Systems develops a model of learning capability that proceeds exactly as its title implies, not as a line, but as a cycle—from codifying individual knowledge and putting it into practice within a context that values social relationships and networks. The conclusions offered in this book build on the rethinking of project management literature in today’s world—creating a strategy-project learning model that not only improves current knowledge capabilities, but also develops new ones.
