Book Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Learning Disabilities written by Marta L. Marchisan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can an image of an angel in a mirror be a sign that God chose me to have cancer for a reason? A Mirrored Image is a courageous story about a thirty-nine year old woman who was preparing for her seventeenth year of teaching when suddenly she was facing the biggest challenge of her life. From diagnosis to recovery and knowledge of finding myself, this book is a look at a candid account of a battle with a devastating illness of rectal cancer and a sense of the person I became. It celebrates life and the triumph of a determined, courageous, and spiritual woman. As the mental healing was beginning so did the chemotherapy. With faith and positive thinking, I tell about my struggle and outline the processes I used to deal with surgery and treatments. I used many facets other than medical to survive and begin my celebration of life. My hope is for all newly diagnosed cancer patients to find the faith, strength, courage, and hope to fight cancer with a positive attitude and win. I also hope that people still battling cancer finds the inspiration and guidance to enrich their outlook of this disease and their life.

Book excerpt: Throughout the world youth-related problems are becoming more and more acute. The number of children being diagnosed with behavior disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, and Tourette syndrome is multiplying. Youth violence, alcohol and drug abuse, teenage promiscuity, and teen suicides have become commonplace. Learning disabilities and illiteracy are increasing at an alarming rate.Who or what is to blame for these problems? Are some of these problems truly the result of biochemical imbalances or neurological disorders 'in the brain? Are some caused by foods containing artificial colors and flavors? Should we blame vaccines? Heredity The TV? Peer pressure? The authors deliver ample evidence to demonstrate that these popularly proposed causes play no more than a minuscule role - if any - in the creation of these problems. Backed by in-depth research, they offer a very logical explanation for their origin as well as their alarming increase. The book reveals the true causes of ADHD and other youth-related problems. Parents, who know the true cause or causes of such problems, can prevent them from occurring. Parents who are already in dire need of finding help for their children will find that the book also explains what they can do to overcome ADHD and other emotional and behavioral problems - all without the use of drugs.Jan Strydom, a doctor in education, had been involved in consultation and research of learning and behavior problems over a period of 25 years. He also holds a M.A. in philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the state of the art concerning how learning disabilities (LD) are defined; how students with LD and their families are affected; and how LD can be addressed by interdisciplinary teams of health and education professionals. The emphasis is on dispelling the myth that children with LD are not at serious risk for adverse educational and health outcomes because LD are "mild." Major sections of the paper address the following topics: (1) defining LD (inclusions, exclusions, and subtypes); (2) the role of the health care community (assessment and diagnosis, the importance of diagnosis, medication, and the need for health professionals to collaborate with educators); (3) the role of the education community (early intervention, school-based interventions, medication, the gifted student with learning disabilities, secondary and postsecondary education, and the need to collaborate with health professionals); and (4) the role of parents (the importance of understanding treatment and the emotional impact of LD). Appendices list LD myths and misconceptions and causes of school failure. A glossary is provided. Overviews of the Learning Disabilities Association and the National Health and Education Consortium are also included. (Contains 23 references.) (DB)

Book Learning disabilities screening and evaluation guide for low and middle income countries

Download or read book Learning disabilities screening and evaluation guide for low and middle income countries written by Anne M. Hayes and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning disabilities are among the most common disabilities experienced in childhood and adulthood. Although identifying learning disabilities in a school setting is a complex process, it is particularly challenging in low- and middle-income countries that lack the appropriate resources, tools, and supports. This guide provides an introduction to learning disabilities and describes the processes and practices that are necessary for the identification process. It also describes a phased approach that countries can use to assess their current screening and evaluation services, as well as determine the steps needed to develop, strengthen, and build systems that support students with learning disabilities. This guide also provides intervention recommendations that teachers and school administrators can implement at each phase of system development. Although this guide primarily addresses learning disabilities, the practices, processes, and systems described may be also used to improve the identification of other disabilities commonly encountered in schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is important to reaffirm the reality of the learning disabilities (LD) phenomenon as a condition that imposes genuine constraints on a student's ability to function, and not as some chimerical entity defined by an ever-changing political situation. Perceptual, memory, attention, linguistic, social, cognitive and neuropsychological factors are an integral part of LD. By mapping out in great detail and with much new data the acquired knowledge on learning disabilities, both empirical and theoretical, this book unravels many mysteries. This book is a landmark in learning disabilities studies, and it lays down solid foundations for future research and practical intervention in the field.

Book Specific Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Specific Learning Disabilities written by Yitzchak Frank and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a concise but comprehensive review of Specific Learning Disabilities, with a special attention to the biology of these diverse conditions. The reader will get a review of most aspects of SLD, including the different clinical syndromes (mostly dyslexia and dyscalculia), the clinical manifestations and the therapeutic approaches. It is unique in the proportion of its content dedicated to the biological aspects of SLD. It attempts to assemble and present the biological knowledge which has been accumulated on these conditions. This knowledge includes the neurological anatomy of dyslexia and dyscalculia, demonstrated with the help of modern neuro-imaging studies, and the physiology and the genetics of these conditions, again demonstrated by recently available technologies. These new technologies produced major discoveries related to SLD including the importance of phonological processing in reading, the presence of "number center ̈in the brain, and the rain networks involved in reading. We recognize that many dyslexic subjects have a deficit in aspects of language processing, specifically phonological processing; that dyscalculia can be the result of a number of distinct cognitive impairments, and that the basic underlying deficit in many cases of SLD may be a genetic variation. The same new biological investigative techniques can, like never before, measure the outcome of therapeutic techniques and learning methods. Such measurements will, in the future, be the "gold standard ̈in assessing the efficacy of different methods of classroom teaching in regular and different learners. Last, unlike many other publications on SLD, this book discusses the relatively unrecognized emotional aspects of SLD, and the sometime devastating effects that these conditions have on the life of affected subjects and their families, in and out of the classroom.
