Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leading Events of the American Revolution The preparation of this little volume has been attended With much difficulty, because of the disagreement of authori ties whose statements often conflict. Thus, the storming of Stony Point is given by some as July 15, and by others as July 16, 1779. Both dates are correct, as the assault occurred about midnight, but July 15 is preferred. The surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga is variously recorded as having oc curred ou the 16th and on the i7th of October, 1777. Both of these dates also are correct, for the surrender was arranged on the 16th but went into effect the following day. We give the latter as that most commonly received. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Revolution The history of the Revolutionary War may be divided into four well-marked periods. The first period begins in 1761 with the resistance of James Otis to the general search-warrants, and it may be regarded as ending in June, 1774, when the acts for changing the government of Massachusetts were intended to take effect. This period of constitutional discussion culminated in the defiance of Great Britain by the people of Boston when they threw the tea into the harbour; and the acts of April, 1774, by which Parliament replied to the challenge, were virtually a declaration of war against the American colonies, though yet another year elapsed before the first bloodshed at Lexington. The second period opens with June, 1774, when Massachusetts began to nullify the acts of Parliament, and it closes with the Declaration of Independence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Revolution: With a Preliminary View of the Character and Principles of the Colonists, and Their Controversies With Great Britain The first intention of the writer of this book.was to prepare an abstract of some one of the larger histories of the American Revolution, in a more compact form than any which he had met with in his own reading. The object was to present a convenient volume, which should embrace all the principal occurrences, civil, military, and political, in America and Europe, having a direct'infiuence on the principles and progress of the revolutionary contest, at the same time that it should avoid all minor details not positively necessary to the continuity or integrity of the narrative. The military events were to be made less pro minent than is usual; and all circumstantial accounts of battles and manceuvres in the field, beyond leading incidents important for the understanding of the issue, were to be avoided. After examining several of the principal authorities, the design of following any particular author was abandoned, and the present plan adopted, of re-writing and re-arranging the whole, without regard to the order or language of previous histories. These are the claims of the work to originality. Its merits are submitted to the judgment of the public. The writer has diligently compared the received authorities, and exercised his judgment freely in selecting and arranging the essential facts; and he thinks he has brought within the compass of a volume convenient for popular use, a connected narrative of the revolution, em bracing all the principal events - foreign and domestic. Those portions which relate to the foreign negotiations, are more full in proportion, than the other divisions of the sub ject. They will be found, it is believed, correct and valuable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True History of the American Revolution The purpose of this history of the Revolution is to use the original authorities rather more frankly than has been the practice with our historians. They appear to have thought it advisable to omit from their narratives a great deal which, to me, seems essential to a true picture. I cannot feel satisfied with any description of the Revolution which treats the desire for independence as a sudden thought, and not a long growth and development, or which assumes that every detail of the conduct of the British government was absurdly stupid, even from its own point of view, and that the loyalists were few in numbers and their arguments not worth considering. I cannot see any advantage in not describing in their full meaning and force the smuggling, the buying of laws from the governors, and other irregular conduct in the colonies which led England to try to remodel them as soon as the fear of the French in Canada was removed. Nor can I accept a description which fails to reveal the salient details of the great controversy over the rather peculiar methods adopted by General Howe to suppress the rebellion. This controversy was a part of the Revolution. It involved the interesting question of Howe's instructions from the ministry and the methods which the ministry intended to use with the revolted colonists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprehending All the Principal Events Both in the Field and in the Cabinet United States, and the constitutions of the several States, have only given to those chartered rights a new name. The People now speak in their collective majes ty, where a Monarch, in his individual majesty, former ly spoke; and the lips of both utter precisely the same sentiments - se false was the opinion prevalent in the day of our revolution, that our ancestors were rebels. In the prosecution of the present work, it is deem ed proper to state, that the facts have been drawn from what is honestly believed to be the most nuques tionable sources from a painful and accurate examina tion and comparison of the various histories of that important event; from the correspondence of those who were the immediate parties in a struggle rso glorious to our cguntry; from official documents, from the ar chives of our Continental Congress, and those of the different Legislatures and from the orderly books, that may properly be denominated the journals of the army. Much, perhaps, remains to be'known, that may yet be preserved to posterity, if the private cor respondence of those who were the immediate actors in this important drama, has yet survived the dilapi dations of time and of accident but much is irrevoca bly covered by the ashes of the grave. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New York During the Revolutionary War, and of the Leading Events in the Other Colonies at That Period, Vol. 1 This history of the early phases Of the dispute and of the conduct of the war, in New York, and of its leading events in the other colonies, depicts the origin of the difficulties in that province, the measures adopted, the events which happened, the men who took part in them, and the results which fol lowed, on both sides; and as they were seen, and known, and noted, by an educated gentleman Of the highest social and official position, who personally knew the subject thoroughly, and has not hesitated to describe it fully, and without regard, to the fear, or favor, of either Side. The Honorable Thomas Jones, Of Fort Neck, Queens County, Long Island, a graduate of Yale College, Recorder of the City, and one of the Judges of the Supreme Court of the Province of New York, is the author. It was written, as appears from allusions in the text, between the years 1783 and 1788, during that dark period between the close Of the Revolutionary war and the establishment of the existing form of government of the United States in 1789, which is so little known and understood at this day. A period when the wisest and the best Of.the men who carried through the American Revolution almost despaired of the existence of the colonies which they had contributed to make independent states and which existence was only rendered possible by the slow and extremely unwilling adoption Of the Federal Consti tution framed by the Convention of 1787, an adoption, as John Quincy Adams expressed it, extorted by the grinding necessities Of a reluctant nation. Download or read book The Beginnings of the American Revolution Vol 1 written by Ellen Chase and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of the American Revolution, Vol. 1: Based on Contemporary Letters, Diaries and Other Documents N studying the beginnings of the American Revolu tion, the remark made by John Adams that there was a revolution in men's minds that preceded the years of battle, and that the result of the war but set its seal on a severance of interests already accomplished is more and more clearly pressed home. The successive incidents that bred discord between the mother country and the Colonies are singularly rich in detail and color. Time would fail to tell the story of the period between the Peace of Paris and April 19th in full. There were clashings with stamp masters, bickerings along the water front, tumults, and tea parties up and down the land. The priceless manuscript volumes in the State Archives and the zeal of the Massachusetts Historical Society in bringing to light numerous journals and letters of the day have given unusual facilities for following these years in their relationship to Boston. If the happenings elsewhere are passed by briefly here, they are none the less memorable. The main purpose of the narrative has been to make the Outline of events in this neighborhood live once more in all their wealth of humor and picturesqueness as they were known by the actors. The interest, however, is more than local, more than contemporary, for the elements here shown at Odds are capable Of cropping out again. Taken seriously, the story Of this book may well have a practical side, considered in relation to our newly-acquired Colonial possessions. We at home hear vaguely Of these outlying parts being settled by some Of ourselves; but the conditions into which the Colonists go are but little understood and less noted. Yet, carrying our name and traditions and pluck, we must believe that their day's work will tell as the years go by. With this view, hav ing collected a force of more than 3000 men, he cross ed the river in several places, and moved towards the posts occupied by Moultrie. Download or read book The American Revolution Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by George Otto Trevelyan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Revolution, Vol. 1 The author of this volume is aware that an expectation exists, among those who have read "The Early History of Charles James Fox," that he would carry on the account of that statesman's life from the point at which he dropped it eighteen years ago. When the consideration of the project was seriously approached, it became evident that the difficulties of writing a political biography, as distinguished from a political history, were in this case insuperable. The story of Fox, between 1774 and 1782, is inextricably interwoven with the story of the American Revolution. That immense event filled his mind, and consumed his activities; while every circumstance about him worth relating may find a natural place in the course of the narrative which bears upon it. During that part of the great drama which was enacted within the walls of Parliament, Fox was never off the stage; and, when there, he played a conspicuous, and (as time went on) confessedly the leading, part.
