Book Women Superintendents in the Rural Midwest

Download or read book Women Superintendents in the Rural Midwest written by Anne R. Strothman and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women represent the majority of teachers in U. S. public schools; yet, only 26.7% of superintendents leading districts are women (Tienken, 2021, p.19). Although women have made gains in leading schools in larger districts, the same trend is not evident in smaller, rural school systems, which describe the majority of school districts in the United States (AASA: The School Superintendents Association, 2017). Scholars commonly attribute this disparity to gender bias prevalent in rural cultures (Agostine-Wilson, 2017; Quinlan, 2013; Keller, 2014). To help address gender inequalities in educational leadership, schools, districts, and educational leaders must develop an awareness of specific structural and sociocultural challenges to the superintendency faced by women in rural contexts and take proactive steps to understand and mitigate those challenges. This study focused on the narratives and lived experiences of 12 women superintendents in rural school districts. The purpose of this research was to explore, through the critical lens of intersectional feminist theory, the potential challenges to the public school district superintendency that women face in the rural Midwest. Critical narrative inquiry helped explore the challenges that women face when aspiring to the superintendency in the rural Midwest. Using intersectional feminist theory as outlined by Crenshaw (1989) and Hankivsky (2014) assisted with analyzing the stories of rural women superintendents' discussing obstacles that they encountered when reaching for positions of power in rural communities. This study also explored the effects that COVID-19 had on these women's experiences as rural superintendents, an important aspect of their experience since the pandemic has disproportionally affected women in the United States (AAUW, 2020; Donovan and Labonte, 2020; Hilferty et al., 2021; Karageorge, 2020). By exploring and exposing challenges to the superintendency of rural Midwestern school districts faced by women, this study can help those interested in pursuing careers as rural school district leaders to learn about those obstacles and thus prepare themselves better to overcome them. The findings can potentially help aspiring women educational leaders devise strategies to overcome those challenges, such as using allies, mentors, and networks, as well as means to address gender bias. Additionally, this study can help policymakers and professional organizations develop courses of action to assist aspirants and districts with overcoming or dismantling those obstacles. This study's findings offer insights to rural school district leadership and boards of education to help them advance gender equity in their districts, ensuring that they have the best leadership possible. This study's findings can also serve as a springboard for more research on overcoming specific challenges to the superintendency, help graduate programs to incorporate curricula that would assist rural districts with these barriers, and provide suggestions to prospective superintendents of all genders for navigating rural contexts while serving as educational leaders. This study also provided an avenue for rural women superintendents to celebrate their surmounting these challenges. Finally, this study aims to promote gender equity in rural K-12 systems to support women serving in district-level leadership roles with providing leadership models for all students, especially those who identify as female.

Book Superintendent principal Perception of Effective Leadership Behaviors practices in Small Rural School Districts in Wisconsin

Download or read book Superintendent principal Perception of Effective Leadership Behaviors practices in Small Rural School Districts in Wisconsin written by John C. Lehnen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People who serve in the dual role of superintendent and principal are very unique, typically serving as the lone leader in the smallest of rural school districts. Research on rural school district leadership tends to be lacking when compared to suburban or urban school leadership. The literature review highlights the demands and challenges of rural school district leadership in history to the most recent studies done on superintendents, principals and superintendent/principals. Although superintendent/principals may be small in number, they are no less important than large district superintendents. The purpose of this study was to provide an analysis of the perceptions of superintendent/principals on how they fulfill their dual role responsibilities with effective leadership behaviors/practices as one administrator in a small rural school district in the state of Wisconsin. The theoretical framework details the behaviors/practices that fulfill the areas of responsibility of superintendents and principals from two separate meta-analysis research studies. Additionally, the framework included support for the meta-analysis research on superintendent leadership responsibilities and practices from another major study done in a rural context. The researcher employed descriptive quantitative research methods using survey research aligned to the theoretical framework. Forty-nine superintendent/principals out of 53 possible participants in the state of Wisconsin answered a 115 item survey on behaviors/practices that reflected their actual behaviors/practices in their school district. Overall, the findings show, despite the numerous challenges of small rural district leadership, superintendent/principals perceived themselves positively, more completely meeting their superintendent and principal responsibilities with effective behaviors/practices than not. The researcher also analyzed the data for significant differences in superintendent/principal’s scores on behaviors/practices to compare/contrast with the research presented in the review of literature or theoretical framework. The most interesting conclusion was the importance of “Defined Autonomy” and what it means to a superintendent/principal for overall success in leading a small rural school district. This research study provided several implications for the future. Despite the challenges of the dual role, superintendent/principals must stay focused on effective behaviors/practices that meet their responsibilities, connect to their communities and parents, and develop trusting relationships with all constituents.

Book The Superintendent as Instructional Leader

Download or read book The Superintendent as Instructional Leader written by David Eugene Smith (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the role of the rural school district superintendent as instructional leader. Specifically, the study focused on rural superintendents who were known as effective instructional leaders and explored their understandings of and motivations for their instructional leadership work, how they fulfilled this work, and how this work was affected by recent federal and state policy initiatives. The study addressed these questions: (a) what are rural school district superintendents' understandings of their role and responsibilities as instructional leader?; (b) what are rural school district superintendents' perspectives on the various facets of instructional leadership?; (c) what do rural school district superintendents actually do to fulfill their roles as instructional leaders?; (d) what are rural school district superintendents' perspectives on their preparation for instructional leadership and their need for continuous professional development?; and (e) how has recent federal and state legislation affected the work of the rural school superintendent as instructional leader? Data were collected through open-ended, phenomenologically oriented interviews with four rural school district superintendents in northeast Washington State. Analysis of the qualitative data resulted in the unearthing of seven major themes: (a) setting direction, (b) supporting the instructional growth of the district, (c) the superintendents' direct involvement with the classroom, (d) acquiring resources for the instructional program, (e) the superintendents' work developing principal instructional leadership, (f) the self-development of the district instructional leader, and (g) challenges faced by rural school district instructional leaders. Each theme also discussed the impact of the rural district context on that theme. Four conclusions were drawn from the study: (a) rural school district superintendents communicate a focus on improved teaching and learning by being heavily engaged in the classrooms observing teaching; (b) rural school district superintendents engage with other rural districts to provide aligned and collaborative professional development; (c) superintendents rely heavily on one another to lead instructionally; and (d) the remote context provides rural school district superintendents with additional and unique challenges to instructional leadership. My hope is that this study will inform effective rural superintendent instructional leadership and lead to discussions regarding policy and research to support superintendents facing rural contextual leadership challenges.

Book An Examination of the Leadership Practices of Effective Rural Superintendents

Download or read book An Examination of the Leadership Practices of Effective Rural Superintendents written by Mark Forner and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examined the leadership practices of rural superintendents who have led their districts to significant improvement in student academic achievement. The overall research goal was to examine how Waters' and Marzano's six correlates of effective superintendent leadership practice have been applied by school leaders who have successfully pursued academic reform in their rural school districts. A multiple case study approach was used to examine the work practices of seven superintendents leading rural school districts in Michigan where student academic performance was on the rise. A criterion-based selection methodology was used to identify the superintendent subjects and their districts. A total of twenty-seven interviews were conducted with the seven school leaders and with board trustees, teachers and principals from each district. Qualitative coding techniques were used to develop common leadership priorities, practices and philosophies for the purposes of cross-case analysis. This cross-case analysis produced three common leadership priorities, six common leadership philosophies and a total of 57 commonly-cited leadership practices. The three common leadership priorities were: (a) All students can and will achieve academic success, (b) A high quality teacher in each classroom, and (c) Creating resources. The six common leadership philosophies were: (a) Transparency, (b) Proximity, (c) Autonomy, (d) Constructive Confrontation, (e) Making Hard Choices, and (f) Celebration. The findings of this study were consistent with Waters' and Marzano's six correlates of effective leadership practice. The leadership practices exhibited by rural superintendents and cited in this study closely mirrored five of the six correlates. Additionally seven new findings from this study extend beyond Waters and Marzano and add to the literature base.

Book Good to Great

Download or read book Good to Great written by JoAnn A. Sternke and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research question guiding this study was: How are the traits and behaviors of school superintendents in highly successful K-12 Wisconsin public school settings similar to or different from the traits and behaviors exhibited by the successful CEOs identified in the research of Collins in Good to Great (2001)? ... The research design was a qualitative case study employing the data collection method of interview. Research findings were: 1. The study confirmed that superintendents who served as research participants possessed the common leadership traits of personal humility and professional will found in Level 5 Leaders identified by Collins. 2. Additionally, this study confirmed that the leadership behaviors of successful CEOs identified by Collins were exhibited by research participants. Superintendents studies exhibited the behaviors of First Who ... Then What, Confronting the Brutal Facts, the Hedgehog Concept, and Creating a Culture of Discipline. 3. Research participants also exhibited two distinguishing leadership behaviors not identified by Collins. Study participants recognized the importance of and made a commitment to building quality relationships. This finding confirmed the findings of Gray (2005) who researched Collins work in an educational setting. A unique leadership behavior emerged from this study: a strong community mindedness. Superintendents believed in serving their communities and involving the community in developing a shared vision for student achievement.

Book Successful Long Term Rural Superintendents

Download or read book Successful Long Term Rural Superintendents written by Gregory Macaluso and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the results of a study of three long-term rural superintendents and their districts. The districts were selected due to the academic successes of their students as indicated by high school graduation rate, percent of students receiving advanced designation diplomas, and percentage of graduates planning to attend college. Through a series of interviews with various stakeholders, data was collected to determine the characteristics of the communities and the superintendents. Four themes regarding longevity emerged from the study: leadership characteristics alone are not a sufficient predictor of longevity and success for a rural school superintendent; the superintendents had a focus on high expectations for student achievement in their rural schools; each superintendent developed and mentored a cohesive administrative team; and each leader built strong relationships while establishing trust among the school community.

Book Superintendent Leadership

Download or read book Superintendent Leadership written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of these comparative case studies was to understand how superintendents in urban districts use reform strategies to leverage systemic change to improve student achievement. The study focused on four effective superintendents of Broad Prize for Urban Education winning school districts. It examined leadership traits, core beliefs, behaviors and actions, leadership qualities, and identified commonalities and differences amongst these nationally recognized superintendents. The research questions provided a focus for evaluating the superintendent's selection of reform strategies, the district context in which they were implemented, and the influence of the superintendents' background and experience. The researcher gathered evidence by conducting individual interviews with each superintendent and members of his or her cabinet and by reviewing selected artifacts related to the districts demographics, professional development practices, reform initiatives, and student performance data. The researcher reviewed the data, seeking common themes, while watching for disproving evidence. The central themes related to the leadership profiles of these effective superintendents were: (a) longevity and breadth of service; (b) providing focused professional development; (c) building leadership capacity; (d) utilizing data driven results/monitoring data; (e) differentiating resources; (f) building relationships; (g) hiring the "right" people; (h) building strong board relations; and (i) launching only a few highly focused and impacted initiatives. These findings were consistent across all four superintendents. The findings and conclusions from this study generated recommendations for practice and policy making and recommendations for future research in support of leading and improving schools for increased student achievement. The recommendations are presented as they relate to specific areas of responsibility: school and district administrators, school board members, and policymakers and superintendent preparation programs. Recommendations from this study include: having a strategic plan that is aligned with district goals and actions and supported by stakeholders, hiring "the right leadership team," differentiating resources based on need, hiring a highly qualified superintendent, and providing mentors and coaches to aspiring administrators and superintendents. Recommendations for future research include: conducting additional case studies on the actions of other urban superintendents, possibly including a discrepancy analysis to determine if struggling districts are implementing the successful strategies identified in these four Broad Prize winning districts; examining effective superintendents who took a nontraditional path to the superintendency; and a study of superintendents of large urban districts who are home grown and brought up through the system.

Book Practices that Constitute Successful School Superintendent Leadership Perceptions from Established Rural School Superintendents

Download or read book Practices that Constitute Successful School Superintendent Leadership Perceptions from Established Rural School Superintendents written by David Brian Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine which leadership practices are the most crucial in helping school superintendents be successful as school leaders. This is a qualitative study in which six rural Missouri superintendents were interviewed to determine the answers to the following research questions: (a) What leadership practices are perceived by established school superintendents to be crucial to successful school leadership? and (b) What do established superintendents perceive are the leadership practices that warrant the most attention from the school superintendent? A review of the literature identified nine commonly used research practices: vision, communication, visibility, inspiring followers, shared leadership and collaboration, professional growth, ethical behavior, political awareness, and building relationships. The qualitative interviews focused on the impressions, the perceptions, and the experiences of the superintendents as answers were sought concerning which leadership practices were considered the most crucial. Once the interviews were completed and the data were analyzed, the findings provided evidence to support recommendations for superintendents concerning communication, having an ethical focus, being effective managers, and utilizing combinations of leadership practices.
