Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify leadership strategies employed by school principals that encourage teachers in collaborative decision making. This study provides an overview of literature on administrative styles and collaborative decision making among staff and recognizing that the expertise of teachers promotes shared governance and decision making as teacher input becomes valuable in creating a collegial environment. By completing an interview protocol with principals, several conclusions regarding principal leadership styles, teacher empowerment, and collaborative decision making surfaced as a result of the study. The findings in this study showed a significant correlation between leadership styles implemented by principals and teacher involvement in collaborative decision making. This study presents descriptive findings about collaborative decision making from the perspective of principals who encourage teacher participation in the decision making process regarding school wide issues. This research also noted that all principals studied used several strategies to involve teachers, in varying degrees, to implement shared governance structures and processes to enhance teacher empowerment. The research and results of this study supports the notion of the leadership style of a school administrator having a direct impact on the degree of teacher participation in decision making.

Theoretical framework was grouped on the types of leadership and the academic performance; the study used survey design assessing the impact of leadership style on academic performance in secondary schools in Arusha City Council. It involved seventy (70) respondents in selected secondary schools in Arusha City. Empirical data was collected using questionnaires and SPSS was used as a tool to analyze data. The findings indicated that, there is significance relationship between leadership style and the academic performance. The findings further indicated that, the types of leadership style used in selected secondary used in secondary school was participative and encourage relationship among the teachers, The study discovered that teachers are involved in decision making. There was positive impact of participatory leadership style of school heads that dominates the area on the academic performance in selected secondary Arusha City Council. In the light of this study it is recommended that the authorities are responsible for making educational policies and design to provide training and development programmes to head of schools to serve as reference policy decision on leadership.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of various district and site level conditions that influence the frequency of teacher data-driven decision-making behaviors. This study is motivated by four research questions: 1) Among various kinds of data available to teachers and principals in making data-driven decisions: a. What is the relative level of availability of that data? b. What is the relative frequency of use of that data? 2) When considering conditions that potentially influence use of evidence at schools, including district office supports, principal leadership behaviors, principal leadership styles, prior training, and attitudes towards data use: a. To what extent do teachers experience these conditions? b. To what extent do principals experience these conditions? 3) To what extent do teachers engage in processes for interpreting evidence at schools? 4) Is there a relationship between types of evidence used by teachers and conditions influencing use of evidence, and the extent to which teachers engage in processes for interpreting evidence at schools? This study integrates a wide range of qualitative research regarding the role of the district office and principals in implementing key supports and conditions for data-driven decision-making, which are then explored through a principal and teacher survey administered to nine principals and 104 teachers from 11 schools. The findings from the research revealed that teachers varied in their use of data, as they reported that academic data was both more available and more widely used than non-academic data such as suspension, attendance, or surveys of teachers or parents. In addition, teachers and principals reported varied conditions supporting data-driven decision-making, with principal leadership behaviors reported to occur frequently, as compared with district office supports. Teachers also self-reported very high levels of data-driven decision-making behaviors. Ultimately, this research supported principal leadership behaviors as being the most positively associated with teacher data-driven decision-making behaviors, with district supports having a weak, but positive relationship to teacher behaviors as well. I conclude with recommendations for district and site leaders seeking to improve data-driven decision-making practices in their own organizations.
