Book excerpt: To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the International School Leadership Development Network (ISLDN), this book is a compilation of the work conducted by network scholars. This volume is the first comprehensive overview of the studies conducted by ISLDN members engaged in examining how social justice leaders and leaders of high-needs schools address the social conditions, learning experiences, and performance of their students. Other international school leadership research consortia have emerged in the 21st century; however, the ISLDN is the second longest operating project, after the International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP). Since its creation in 2010, ISLDN scholars have delivered papers at a variety of international conferences and shared findings in research publications, including books and special issues of journals. Until now, ISLDN research findings have been disseminated separately for the project’s two strands: (a) social justice leadership and (b) leadership in underperforming high-needs schools. Therefore, the purpose of the book is to document the history and evolution of the ISLDN and to provide descriptions and reflections of the project’s research findings, methodologies, and collaborative processes across the two strands. This volume captures studies of school leaders from 19 countries representing six continents - Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania, Europe, North America, and South America. The authors examine important external and internal contextual factors influencing schools in different cultural settings and provide insights about the values and practices of social justice leaders working in high-needs school settings. Numerous practical strategies are provided for school leaders working in schools with similar conditions. The concluding chapter by the co-editors synthesizes the structural factors, personal beliefs and values, and contextualized change management strategies that shape school leaders’ actions aimed at ensuring the best learning outcomes for their students. Besides capturing the range of findings emerging from various ISLDN studies conducted over the past decade, several chapters critically examine the project’s current contributions to the field. Authors suggest broadening the dissemination of our findings to increase the visibility of the project, expanding the research methods beyond qualitative interviews, incorporating studies from non-Anglophone countries, and augmenting the scope of our analyses and research focus. These researchers’ journeys also reveal the obstacles to and benefits of engaging in these types of international collaborative research ventures.

Book excerpt: Researchers have been increasingly interested in the phenomenon of social networks in education, a research area that provides more opportunities to study the relationships among individuals or organizations in our educational system. The goal of this dissertation was to understand the effect of various social networks on outcomes by investigating various relationships in the educational system. To achieve the goal, three distinct, but related, essays comprised this dissertation. In the first essay, I examined the effects of interschool networks on student achievement. By using the data collected from the High Impact Leadership (HIL) program and employing the hierarchical linear model (HLM) method, I investigated how different interschool relationships, indicated by various interschool network measures, were associated with student mathematics and reading achievement, and the growth of student mathematics and reading achievement. Key findings included (a) schools that reported to have a stronger relationship with other schools had better, and more growth in, mathematics achievement; (b) schools with reciprocal relationships had better, and more growth in, mathematics and reading achievement; and (c) schools connected to more influential schools in the network had better, and more growth in, mathematics and reading achievement. In the second essay, I inquired into the relationship between teacher-to-teacher relationships and student achievement. By using the meta-analysis method, I specifically focused on (a) the relationship between teacher's individual relationship with other teachers and student mathematics and reading achievement; (b) the relationship between teacher-to-teacher relationship at the organization level (i.e., school or grade team) and student mathematics and reading achievement; and (c) how three frequently used theoretical frameworks in studying teacher-to-teacher relationships--teacher network, teacher collaboration and professional learning community (PLC), at either individual or organizational level--were related to student mathematics and reading achievement. Key findings included (a) teachers' individual relationships were not related to student achievement; (b) the relationships in schools or grade teams were significantly positively related to student mathematics and reading achievement; and (c) at the organizational level, different theoretical frameworks were not related to the level of student achievement, but did result in different levels of heterogeneity (i.e., heterogeneity was low for PLCs and teacher networks and was high for teach collaborations). In the third essay, I conducted a meta-analysis study on the relationship between (a) principals' network position in school-wide networks, measured by principals' degree centrality, and (b) school leadership, trust and innovation climate. I found that principals' network position had a strong positive relationship with leadership climate and a moderate relationship with trust and innovation climate, with low to moderate level of heterogeneity. The findings in the three essays have implications for policy, practice, and research. From the perspectives of policy and practice, generally speaking social networks in education are associated with better outcomes, and should be promoted in the educational system. Social networks appear to be an important vehicle to improve outcomes in the context of the bifurcated educational system. Directions for future research were also discussed.

Book excerpt: On January 31, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus to be a global health emergency. Within months, schools across the nation began to suspend in-person instruction and transition to a fully remote means of delivery (Ballotopedia, 2020). This transition created an immediate crisis for educational leaders as they were instantly forced to determine how to deliver educational services in an entirely remote setting (Fernandez & Shaw, 2020; Kuhfeld et al., 2020). The purpose of this phenomenological study is to investigate how the priorities and actions of superintendents were influenced by established social networks and existing organizational culture during the rapid transition to remote instruction in the context of the COVID-19 health crisis using Daly's (2010) Social Network Theory as the conceptual frame. "Social network research suggests that informal webs of relationships are often the chief determinants of how well and quickly change efforts take hold, diffuse, and sustain." (Daly, 2010, p.2). Key findings showed that every superintendent consulted and included various internal and external social networks in the planning and decision-making during the transition to remote learning during the COVID-19 crisis. Superintendents also perceived the involvement of these network groups to facilitate rather than impede the development, communication and implementation of the resulting remote learning plans. Lastly, superintendents were able to identify key strengths, challenges and opportunities that were realized during the early stages of the crisis and how they may inform practice into the future.Several conclusions were identified from the findings. Superintendents believed it was necessary to include internal and external network groups when making decisions regarding the transition to remote learning. This provided various perspectives to strengthen outcomes and distribute responsibilities that facilitated the number of tasks necessary to be performed. Superintendents perceived that the inclusion of internal and external groups facilitated the transition to remote learning and sustained relationships throughout the crisis through consistent and frequent communication between the participating stakeholder groups. Superintendents identified key strengths of the remote learning plans to be derived from prior planning in technology, curriculum, and relationship building. Challenges during the delivery of remote learning were related to inconsistencies and inequities in the availability of technology for students, the technological competence of faculty delivering instruction and the platforms and communication methods used to interact with students. Finally, opportunities realized from the transition to remote learning included an increase in technological aptitude among faculty and a deeper understanding for the inequities that exist among students and the impact of these disparities on their educational performance. This study contributes to the literature on crisis leadership and the role of social networks in facilitating decision-making and the organizational response during disruptive change. The focus on the interrelationship between organizational structure and culture and how leadership beliefs and actions are influenced by existing social networks in education is understudied. This research will provide insight into how organizations can use Social Network Theory to promote relationships and to improve outcomes during times of disruptive change.
