Download or read book Regulation Theory and Sustainable Development written by Corinne Gendron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that current economist theories do not take into account the socially constructed nature of the debate surrounding the environment and environmental policy. It examines whether proposed economic solutions to environmental policy are, in fact, viable in practice. The book demonstrates that social conflicts cause policy compromises, which shape the economic system of a post-industrial ecological society. The author offers an innovative socio-economic theory of environmental politics, which illuminates the transformation dynamics brought about by the ecological crisis. Regulation Theory and Sustainable Development will be of interest to students and scholars of environmental politics, policy and governance.
Download or read book Le Travail social la recherche de nouveaux paradigmes written by Collectif and published by Éditions ies. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The New Spirit of Capitalism written by Luc Boltanski and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New edition of this major work examining the development of neoliberalism In this established classic, sociologists Luc Boltanski and Eve Chiapello get to the heart of contemporary capitalism. Delving deep into the latest management texts informing the thinking of employers, the authors trace the contours of a new spirit of capitalism. They argue that beginning in the mid-1970s, capitalism abandoned the hierarchical Fordist work structure and developed a new network-based form of organization founded on employee initiative and autonomy in the workplace—a putative freedom bought at the cost of material and psychological security. This was a spirit in tune with the libertarian and romantic currents of the period (as epitomized by dressed-down, cool capitalists such as Bill Gates and Ben and Jerry) and, as the authors argue, a more successful, pernicious, and subtle form of exploitation. In this new edition, the authors reflect on the reception of the book and the debates it has stimulated.

This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Geography History and Social Sciences written by Georges B. Benko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges Benko «Societies are much messier than our theories of them» Michael Mann The Sources of Social Power 1 Towards a unified social theory Why are there communication problems between the different disciplines of the social sciences? And why should there be so much misunderstanding? Most probably because the encounter of several disciplines is in fact the encounter of several different histories, and therefore of several different cultures, each interpreting the other according to the code dictated by its own culture. Inevitably geographers view other disciplines through their own cultural filter, and even a benevolent view remains 'ethnocentric'. It was in order to avoid such ethnocentricity that Femand Braudel called for more unity among the social sciences in 1958 : «l wish the social sciences . . . would stop discussing their respective differences so much . . . and instead look for common ground . . . on which to reach their first agreement. Personally I would call these ways : quantification, spatial awareness and 'longue duree'». In its place at the center of the social sciences, geography reduces all social reality to its spatial dimensions. Unfortunately, as a discipline, it considers itself all too often to be in a world of its own. There is a need in France for a figure like Vidal de la Blanche who could refocus attention away from issues of time and space, towards space and social reality. Geographic research will only take a step forward once it learns to address the problems facing all the sciences.
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of the Sociology of Work in Europe written by Paul Stewart and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the key conceptual features of the development of the Sociology of Work (SoW) in Europe since 1945, using eleven country case studies. An original contribution to our understanding of the trajectory of the SoW, the chapters map the current state of the theoretical background of the sub-discipline's development to broader socio-political and economic changes, traced across a heterogeneous set of national contexts. Different definitions of the SoW in each country often reflect variations in the focus of analysis, and these chapters link the subject definition and focus to other social science disciplines, the state, as well as social class interests and ideologies. The book contends that the ways in which the sub-discipline makes sense of changes in work is itself a response to the type of society in which the sub-discipline is practiced, whether in the post-war social democratic West, the Soviet East, or today's societies, dominated by variant forms of neo-liberalism. It will be of use to scholars and students interested in the transnational history of the discipline of sociology, with a specific focus on the nexus between the sociology of labour, ideology, economics and politics.
Download or read book Paradoxes of European Legal Integration written by Anne Lise Kjær and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on paradoxes and tensions of European legal integration, this book investigates four complex and inherently contradictory processes - constitutionalization and democratization, institution-building and market-making, cross-cultural communication and European discourse, and cultural exceptionalism and normalization - to offer a new framework for understanding contemporary European integration. The volume features contributions from some of the biggest names in European legal philosophy, to include Neil MacCormick, Yves Dezalay and Bryant Garth, Pierre Legrand, Heikki Mattila and David Nelken. It presents a timely, interdisciplinary approach to an important and topical area and will be of interest to those concerned with the place of socio-legal processes, language and culture in the continuous advancement of the EU project.
Download or read book The Economics of Economists written by Alessandro Lanteri and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The profession of academic economics has been widely criticized for being excessively dependent on technical models based on unrealistic assumptions about rationality and individual behavior, and yet it remains a sparsely studied area. This volume presents a series of background readings on the profession by leading scholars in the history of economic thought and economic methodology. Adopting a fresh critique, the contributors investigate the individual incentives prevalent in academic economics, describing economists as rational actors who react to their intellectual environment and the incentives for economic research. Timely topics are addressed, including the financial crisis and the consequences for the discipline, as well as more traditional themes such as pluralism in research, academic organizations, teaching methodology, gender issues and professional ethics. This collection will appeal to scholars working on topics related to economic methodology and the teaching of economics.

Download or read book Pierre Bourdieu written by and published by Djoef Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special English language issue of the Nordic periodical Retfærd (Justice) is dedicated to the sociology of law and one of the great social theorists of the late 20th century, the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002). In his extensive catalogue of publications, Bourdieu provided the outline of sociology of the legal field. Moreover, in his many studies of other social fields, and especially in his in-depth analyses of the State, he addressed law and the legal profession as key elements of the development of modern society. Yet, as pointed out in the first article, Bourdieu's encounter with law remained, for a number of reasons, a somewhat unfulfilled research program, which has provided grist to the mill for a growing number of socio-legal studies. The table of contents include: Pierre Bourdieu: From Law to Legal Field * An Intellectual and Personal Encounter * Sociology of the Internationalization of Law * The Double Game of the Patricians of the Indian Bar in the Market of Civic Virtue * The Construction of a Dominant Position in an International Field of Legal Assistance * National Divisions and Transnational Strategies * On the Accumulation of Cosmopolitan Capital: A Comment on Bourdieu and Law
