De manière plus précis, un langage plus complexe (le langage élaboré: expression des capacités métalinguistiques) nécessitant une réflexion sur la langue se développe à l'adolescence. Il est nécessaire pour les acquisitions et les apprentissages au collège. Nous avons alors étudié le retard de langage oral chez l'adolescent (en particulier le langage élaboré) qui aurait des nombreuses conséquences influençant les sphères sociale, familiale, scolaire et psychologique. A partir de cette étude, un matériel de rééducation pour les adolescents âgés de 11 à15 ans et présentant un trouble de l'expression orale a été élaboré. Ce jeu a été mis en pratique auprès de quatre adolescents afin d'apporter des éléments de réponses aux hypothèses suivantes: Le travail sur le langage oral permettra-t-il d'amoindrir les conséquences des difficultés d'expression orale et ainsi d'améliorer les différentes relations de l'adolescent dans ses milieux social, familial, scolaire et sur le plan psychologique? De plus, le jeu est-il adapté à une population d'adolescents (tranche d'âge, centres d'intérêts...) et permet-il de développer le langage oral et en particulier le langage élaboré? Grâce à cette manipulation, les conclusions laissent penser que le jeu est adapté à l'âge et aux goûts des adolescents choisis. Il a aussi participé à développer leur langage oral élaboré (à savoir le lexique, la syntaxe, une curiosité langagière...). Concernant les aspects relationnels, psychologique et scolaire, la mise en pratique a joué un rôle positif sur la vie de certains de ces adolescents (confiance en soi en particulier).

Book excerpt: Malgré les travaux déjà réalisés à ce jour, l'avenir des enfants dysphasiques reste une question à laquelle il est difficile de répondre. Il existe en effet peu d'outils d'évaluation concernant spécifiquement les adolescents dysphasiques et ces outils apprécient peu l'utilisation quotidienne du langage et, par conséquent, la gêne résiduelle réelle de ces jeunes. L'étude conduite ici concerne 20 jeunes dysphasiques âgés de 10 ans 11 mois à 15 ans 7 mois, ayant reçu le diagnostic de dysphasie à l'hôpital Clocheville de Tours et ayant suivi une scolarité ordinaire. Elle s'inscrit dans la continuité des travaux de Tanguy (2004) et Carmès (2005) et s'intéresse, cette fois-ci, à une population plus jeune, jamais explorée jusque là en ce qui concerne le langage fonctionnel. Elle vise, d'une part, à identifier les difficultés langagières persistantes à l'adolescence et les éventuels moyens de compensation développés, et, d'autre part, à estimer l'utilisation que les jeunes font du langage, oral et écrit, dans des situations réelles. L'évaluation est réalisée grâce à l'utilisation d'une batterie classique, «processuelle» de tests étalonnés pour cet âge, et, d'une série d'épreuves fonctionnelles, également proposée à des jeunes témoins de 11 ans et de 14 ans. Les performances aux épreuves fonctionnelles sont confrontées à celles sur les tests standardisés ainsi qu'aux variables cliniques recueillies pour chaque sujet afin d'évaluer ce qui est lié à la mise en œuvre des capacités linguistiques en contexte. Les résultats aux épreuves fonctionnelles sont également comparés à ceux des sujets témoins de manière à appréhender l'incidence des séquelles langagières des adolescents dysphasiques sur leur autonomie, par comparaison à des sujets tout-venants. Ce travail contribue à mieux définir les troubles caractéristiques de cette population et à apprécier dans quelle mesure les épreuves écologiques apportent des informations complémentaires et offrent de nouvelles pistes de rééducation adaptées à cet âge, comparativement aux épreuves classiques.

Even though not explicitly stated. these reports are concerned with the question whether or not some orthographies are easier to learn to read and write than others. One dimension on which orthographies differ from each other is the kind of relationship they bear to pronunciation. The orthographies examined in this book range from the ones that have a simple one-to one grapheme-phoneme relationship to those which have a more complex relationship.

Acquired aphasia in children, albeit rare, is a unique circumstance in which to study the relations between language and the brain during cerebral maturation. Its study further contributes to our understanding of the recovery processes and brain plasticity during childhood. But while there is a great amount of information and experimental work on brain-behaviour relationships in adult subjects, the literature about the effects of focal brain lesions in children is both exiguous and scattered throughout scientific journals and books. We felt it was time to organize a meeting where scientists in this field could compare their experiences and discuss ideas coming from different areas of research. A workshop on Acquired Aphasia in Children was held in Sintra, Portugal, on September 13-15, 1990, and attended by 44 participants from 13 differents countries. The atmosphere was relaxed and informal and the group was kept small to achieve this effect. It was a very lively and pleasant meeting. Some consensus was indeed arrived at concerning methodological problems, definition of terms, and guidelines for future research. It is hypothesized that tools such as games, virtual reality, or applications for smartphones may foster learning, enhance motivation, promote behavioral change, support psychotherapy, favor empowerment, and improve some cognitive functions. Computers and games may create supports for training or help people with cognitive, emotional, or behavioral change. Games take various formats, from board games to informatics to games with interactive rules of play. Similarly, computer tools may vary widely in format, from self-help or assisted computerized training to virtual reality or applications for smartphones. Some tools that may be helpful for mental health were specifically designed for that goal, whereas others were not. Gamification of computer-related products and games with a numeric format tend to reduce the gap between games and computers tools and increase the conceptual synergy in such fields. Games and computer design share an opportunity for creativity and innovation to help create, specifically design, and assess preventive or therapeutic tools. Computers and games share a design conception that allows innovative approaches to overcome barriers of the real world by creating their own rules. Yet, despite the potential interest in such tools to improve treatment of mental disorders and to help prevent them, the field remains understudied and information is under-disseminated in clinical practice. Some studies have shown, however, that there is potential interest and acceptability of tools that support various vehicles, rationales, objectives, and formats. These tools include traditional games (e.g., chess games), popular electronic games, board games, computer-based interventions specifically designed for psychotherapy or cognitive training, virtual reality, apps for smartphones, and so forth. Computers and games may offer a true opportunity to develop, assess, and disseminate new prevention and treatment tools for mental health and well-being. Currently, there is a strong need for state-of-the-art information to answer questions such as the following: Why develop such tools for mental health and well-being? What are the potential additions to traditional treatments? What are the best strategies or formats to improve the possible impact of these tools? Are such tools useful as a first treatment step? What is the potential of a hybrid model of care that combines traditional approaches with games and/or computers as tools? What games and applications have already been designed and studied? What is the evidence from previous studies? How can such tools be successfully designed for mental health and well-being? What is rewarding or attractive for patients in using such treatments? What are the worldwide developments in the field? Are some protocols under development? What are the barriers and challenges related to such developments? How can these tools be assessed, and how can the way that they work, and for whom, be measured? Are the potential benefits of such products specific, or can these additions be attributed to nonspecific factors? What are the users’ views on such tools? What are the possible links between such tools and social networks? Is there a gap between evidence-based results and market development? Are there any quality challenges? What future developments and studies are needed in the field?
