Ainsi, l’association d’une obésité abdominale, d’une hyperglycémie, d’une dyslipidémie et d’une pression artérielle élevée caractérise ce syndrome. Sa présence chez un individu signe l’augmentation du risque cardiovasculaire et du risque de diabète de type 2. Les mécanismes physiopathologiques en cause dans l’installation du syndrome métabolique sont très complexes et non encore élucidés, mais les conséquences cardiovasculaires de sa présence sont en revanche bien démontrées. C’est pourquoi sa prise en charge thérapeutique revêt une importance particulière et doit être la plus précoce possible. Au-delà du traitement pharmacologique de chacune des anomalies métaboliques, cette prise en charge consiste en l’instauration de règles hygiéno-diététiques et repose essentiellement sur la prévention et l’éducation thérapeutique du patient. C’est dans ce cadre que le pharmacien d’officine tient un rôle majeur en réalisant notamment l’analyse et le commentaire des prescriptions médicales, en organisant des actions de prévention du risque cardiovasculaire, en participant à l’éducation thérapeutique du patient par le biais d’entretiens pharmaceutiques pendant lesquels il élabore une fiche-patient nécessaire au suivi de celui-ci, il propose l’analyse du relevé alimentaire, des conseils personnalisés, des explications sur les mécanismes de la maladie et sur ses traitements ...

Le dépistage des différents facteurs de risque (tabagisme, alimentation déséquilibrée, sédentarité, surpoids et obésité, stress, dyslipidémies, hypertension artérielle, diabète, syndrome métabolique) est donc primordial. De nombreuses études à travers le monde ont été réalisées sur le dépistage des maladies cardiovasculaires au sein de pharmacies d'officine. Elles ont permis de mettre en évidence un véritable rôle du pharmacien dans la réalisation de ce dépistage notamment par un nombre important de réorientation chez le médecin généraliste. De plus la pharmacie d'officine présente un certain nombre d'avantages permettant un dépistage d'une grande proportion de la population. Le développement d'outils peut aider au dépistage et à la communication du risque par le patient. L'âge cardiaque, nouvel outil de dépistage du risque cardiovasculaire permet de déterminer l'âge des artères coronaires alimentant le coeur. Il semble contribuer à une amélioration de la communication du risque vasculaire et donc une amélioration des facteurs de risque. L'utilisation de ce nouvel outil à l'officine peut donc encore améliorer la prise en charge du patient à risque vasculaire.
