Book The Economic Turn

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven Kaplan
  • Publisher : Anthem Press
  • Release : 2019-01-16
  • ISBN : 1783088575
  • Pages : 881 pages

Download or read book The Economic Turn written by Steven Kaplan and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mid-eighteenth century witnessed what might be dubbed an economic turn that resolutely changed the trajectory of world history. The discipline of economics itself emerged amidst this turn, and it is frequently traced back to the work of François Quesnay and his school of Physiocracy. Though lionized by the subsequent historiography of economics, the theoretical postulates and policy consequences of Physiocracy were disastrous at the time, resulting in a veritable subsistence trauma in France. This galvanized relentless and diverse critiques of the doctrine not only in France but also throughout the European world that have, hitherto, been largely neglected by scholars. Though Physiocracy was an integral part of the economic turn, it was rapidly overcome, both theoretically and practically, with durable and important consequences for the history of political economy. The Economic Turn brings together some of the leading historians of that moment to fundamentally recast our understanding of the origins and diverse natures of political economy in the Enlightenment.

Book Comparative Theory and Political Experience

Download or read book Comparative Theory and Political Experience written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through his influential writings integrating the heritage of classical political theory with the perspective of modern comparative politics, Mario Einaudi has demonstrated how the twentieth-century political scientist can advance the eighteenth-century philosopher's pursuit of institutions that ensure freedom and civic virtue. Editors Katzenstein, Lowi, and Tarrow have brought together essays illuminating the creative tension in Einaudi's work between the theorist's belief in constitutions as the site for democracy and the realist's understanding of the frailty and contrariness of ordinary people. Eight distinguished scholars here explore the themes that constitute the core of Einaudi's contribution—the interdependence between Europe and America, the role of the comparative method, and the centrality of eighteenth-century theory. Taking individual writings by Einaudi as their starting point, the chapters address a rich diversity of topics.

  • ISBN : 9780521527064
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Preserving the Monarchy written by Munro Price and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-29 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comte de Vergennes is best known as one of the great foreign ministers of modern French history, but for much of the 1780s he was also first minister in all but name. This 1995 book was the first to deal in depth with the critical part he played in French domestic policies on the eve of the Revolution. It studies Vergennes' role in the context of the debate on the nature and future of the French monarchy in the two decades before the Revolution. His financial reforms, fully examined here, were the last attempt to restructure the monarchy in accordance with its traditional principles. The failure of this undertaking accelerated the final collapse of the royal government. Preserving the Monarchy is based on archival research, as well as reinterpretations of the established sources. The result is a significant study, not merely of Vergennes but of the end of the ancien régime.
