Book The Representation of Place

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work considers how myth, collective memory and history interact in the construction of place-based identities in the city, and how such identities become crucial stakes in determining the future of particular areas, neighbourhoods and districts. By analysing two case studies of public protest against urban planning projects, the author looks at how dominant discourses promoted by urban elites have been challenged by groups with little experience of participating in urban governance.

Book The New Security Concept and German French Approaches to the European Pillar of Defence 1990 2000

Download or read book The New Security Concept and German French Approaches to the European Pillar of Defence 1990 2000 written by Siret Hürsoy and published by Tectum Verlag DE. This book was released on 2002 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historic opportunity without precedent is gradually becoming reality in the 21st Century with the chance taken to pave the way in the period 1990-2000 towards the organisation of defence in Europe. The corresponding conditions have been brought about by concrete steps taken at the Masstricht, Amsterdam, Cologne, Helsinki, and Nice European Council meetings. In the end, the EU/WEU is developing into an 'equal' partner to the US by assuming greater responsibility in the security and defence sphere. The French and German bilateral relationship - which is the driving force behind every European integration process - is the historical force behind this development of the ultimate desire to reach a robust European 'Pillar of Defence' through reconfiguration of the transatlantic relationship. This book provides the first comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of German and French approaches to the European 'Pillar of Defence' from the view of 'Europeanisation' emanating from the process of integration.

Book Systems Analysis in Urban Policy Making and Planning

Download or read book Systems Analysis in Urban Policy Making and Planning written by Bruce Hutchinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1980, the Special Programme Panel on Systems Sciences of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) sponsored an Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on "Systems Analysis in Urban Policy-Making and Planning" which was held at New College, Univer sity of Oxford, from 21st to 27th September. This week-long meeting brought together 35 invited delegates from most countries of the NATO Alliance to discuss the impact which syst~ms analysis has had and is likely to have on urban affairs. The manuscript was submitted to the publisher in June of 1982. Although the goal of the ARI was to assess the impact of urban systems analysis as seen through the eyes of those closely involved in such work, the meeting also addressed opportunities for future research and development, and therefore in this book we have attempted to synthesize discussions at the meeting with this in mind. But before we describe the structure of this book, it is worth recounting in a little more detail the intentions and organi zation of the meeting, for this has had an important effect on the type of papers produced here, the way they have been written, and the issues they address.

Book The European Union and National Defence Policy

Download or read book The European Union and National Defence Policy written by Jolyon Howorth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a surprising gap in existing studies, this book addresses many of the unanswered questions surrounding the role of european integration in shaping national defence policy. The impressive array of contributors consider the pressures on state policy emanating from the process of integration. The book is divided into three distinct parts: * an outline of the tortuous history of attempts to link defence with European integration * a study of the four larger member states - France, Germany, Italy and the UK as well as a chapter on The Netherlands; * an analysis of the effects of the nuclear weapons and arms procurement policies. This, the second book in The State and the European Union series, sheds light on an increasingly important and topical aspect of contemporary European security and will be essential reading for those studying European Politics, Public Policy and International Relations.

Book The French White Paper on Defence and National Security

Download or read book The French White Paper on Defence and National Security written by France. Commission du Livre blanc sur la défense et la sécurité nationale and published by ODILE JACOB PUBLISHING CORP. This book was released on 2008-07-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French White Paper on Defence and National Security sets forth a detailed roadmap for defending the nation’s territory and security interests in a globalised world. It also describes how France can contribute to a wider and more effective role for Europe on the international scene. Upon being elected President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy appointed a wide-ranging Commission to appraise France’s defence and security strategy. The resulting White Paper surveys today’s uncertain world and addresses key questions in the field of international security. It embraces European developments, the transatlantic partnership, the evolution of the United Nations and the changing position of the Western world and its relations with the Asian and African powers. It tackles key changes in French defence and security policy in the coming years, and the essential role of knowledge-based security and intelligence gathering, nuclear deterrence, the protection of citizens, as well as of French and European territory, and future operations abroad. The book considers questions that lie at the heart of modern military and political strategy. Issues dealt with include Jihadist-inspired terrorism, proliferation of ballistic missiles, preparing for massive cyber attacks, the future shapes of warfare, and the tools for building peace that globalisation affords. This White Paper will interest everyone concerned about international security and the role of citizens in contributing to their own security.
