Download or read book Education Class Language and Ideology RLE Edu L written by Noelle Bisseret and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an analysis of the ‘essentialist ideology’, which is inherent to class-based societies. The author argues that essentialist ideology is efficient through its unconscious component and is imposed on everyone. It guides school selection and imposes on each class a language specific in its reference to concrete domination relations. It even unbalances the scientific objectivity of researchers in the social sciences, not only among those who abide by the theory of natural aptitudes, but also among its sharpest critics, such as Basil Bernstein, Pierre Bourdieu and J C Passeron, whose work is considered in this book.
Download or read book French Today written by Carol Sanders and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-04-08 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Today is a profile of the French language in its social context. British and French linguists examine trends in French throughout the French-speaking world, and address issues around prescriptivism, gender and language, and regional languages and dialects. The collection includes overviews of work done in particular areas and deeper analyses of sociolinguistic questions. One theme is how to represent and interpret data relating to language varieties that have been marginalised. Another concerns the ways in which French is adapting to the future, whether as a language of new technology, or as a vehicular language on the continent. All chapters of this book are in English, with examples and quotations in French, and a mixture of references given in both languages. At the end of each chapter, there are also texts in French, serving as illustration and as pointers to further reading.

Download or read book Claude Duneton Chroniqueur at Le Figaro written by Mary Munro-Hill and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claude Duneton was a French literary figure of note (1935-2012) and a versatile and prolific writer, whose Parler croquant (1973) first brought him public acclaim. He enjoyed most of all the weekly language articles he wrote for Le Figaro littéraire, from 1994 to 2010, when his life as a writer was cruelly cut short by a severe, disabling stroke. When Claude Duneton succeeded Maurice Chapelan (Aristide) as resident chroniqueur du langage at Le Figaro, he was not without experience in the field, having successfully composed such pieces for the women’s magazine Elle during the late 1970s. That period served him well as a preparation for his sixteen years at Le Figaro. The title of his articles, Le plaisir des mots, was perfectly fitting, since his work as chroniqueur brought him the greatest delight and satisfaction, les mots, words, their meaning, their etymology, their often amusing history, their every aspect, being his grande passion.
Download or read book Studies in Medieval Literature and Languages written by William Rothwell and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As son of the second president of the United States, father to the minister to the Court of St. James, and grandfather to author Henry Adams, John Quincy Adams was part of an American dynasty. In his own career as secretary of state, President, senator, and congressman, Adams was an actor in some of the most dramatic events of the nineteenth century. In this biography, Lynn Hudson Parsons chronicles the life of one of America's most absorbing figures. From the day in 1778 when as a boy he accompanied his father on a diplomatic mission to France, to his last years as an eloquent opponent of his country's foreign and domestic policies, Adams was rarely detached from public affairs. And yet, this biography reveals Adams as a man never truly at home anywhere - in Washington he was stubborn and reclusive, in Europe he was a phlegmatic ideologue, a bulldog among spaniels. His story parallels America's own.

Download or read book The Representation of Parisian Speech in the Cinema of the 1930s written by Michaël Abecassis and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is based on an analysis of videos and transcripts of five films Fric-frac, Circonstances atténuantes, Le Jour se lève, La Règle du jeu and Hôtel du Nord. These films are examples of planned and artificial language. The book looks at the evidential value of these data and assesses the extent to which stereotyped and scripted language can contribute to an understanding of spoken Parisian usage by looking at phonetics, syntax, discourse, lexis and pragmatics. By comparing traditional research carried out by scholars in the nineteenth century and earlier with Parisian data collected and analysed by twentieth-century researchers, the work attempts to identify the salient features that both script-writers and actors in these films considered to be characteristic of social-group differences at that time.

Download or read book The Pragmatics of Left Detachment in Spoken Standard French written by Betsy K. Barnes and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Left detachment constructions (LDs) (e.g. "un buffet de campagne, c est un meuble") are examined in a corpus of informal spontaneous conversation between educated native speakers of French. The overwhelming majority of these constructions are shown to have a clearly pragmatic motivation. The author s observations support a view of LD in French as a particular type of paratactic structure which should be seen primarily as a feature of unplanned discourse. The analysis partly builds on views expressed by Knud Lambrecht in an earlier contribution tot this series.
