Book Human Ochratoxicosis and Its Pathologies

Download or read book Human Ochratoxicosis and Its Pathologies written by Eric Edmond Creppy and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 1993 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the various mycotoxins affecting man, OTA -- involved in the renal disease endemic in the Balkans -- is thought by the International Cancer Research Centre (ICRC) to be a potential carcinogen. The question facing the international ochratoxin-A specialists was whether endemic renal disease in the Balkans was still restricted to this geographical region. A careful study of human ochratoxicosis and other possibly associated pathologies in under-developed countries could enable future developments of the problems to be forecast in other parts of the globe and hence allow means of preventive action to be sought.

Book excerpt: Toxicological Aspects of Drug-Facilitated Crimes provides readers with an overview of the field of DFC: its history, toxicological effects, analysis, interpretation of results, the roles that age, gender and race may play, and clinical presentations of these drugs. The most commonly used drugs in DFC are addressed (alcohol, cannabis, MDMA, and cocaine), as well as an emerging range of pharmaceuticals (benzodiazepines, hypnotics, sedatives, neuroleptics, histamine H1-antagonists, or anesthetics), which are becoming more widely used, but are more difficult to detect. Download or read book Medicine and the Saints written by Ellen J. Amster and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The colonial encounter between France and Morocco took place not only in the political realm but also in the realm of medicine. Because the body politic and the physical body are intimately linked, French efforts to colonize Morocco took place in and through the body. Starting from this original premise, Medicine and the Saints traces a history of colonial embodiment in Morocco through a series of medical encounters between the Islamic sultanate of Morocco and the Republic of France from 1877 to 1956. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources in both French and Arabic, Ellen Amster investigates the positivist ambitions of French colonial doctors, sociologists, philologists, and historians; the social history of the encounters and transformations occasioned by French medical interventions; and the ways in which Moroccan nationalists ultimately appropriated a French model of modernity to invent the independent nation-state. Each chapter of the book addresses a different problem in the history of medicine: international espionage and a doctor’s murder; disease and revolt in Moroccan cities; a battle for authority between doctors and Muslim midwives; and the search for national identity in the welfare state. This research reveals how Moroccans ingested and digested French science and used it to create a nationalist movement and Islamist politics, and to understand disease and health. In the colonial encounter, the Muslim body became a seat of subjectivity, the place from which individuals contested and redefined the political.

Book New Trends in Genetic Risk Assessment

Download or read book New Trends in Genetic Risk Assessment written by G. Jolles and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Trends in Genetic Risk Assessment is based on the Fifth International Round Table of the Rhône-Poulenc Santé Foundation, held in Nice 1987. The conference was an attempt to review the latest theories and mechanisms stipulated for the various aspects of genotoxicity; it was above all an open forum to discuss the new trends, the new tests, and the new battery of tests for assessing the genetic risk of chemicals and especially drugs. This volume is actually not a proceedings of the meeting but a monograph specially edited to report the reviews which were presented and the discussions which took place; it was designed to provide a better understanding of the knowledge obtained in the most recent years and to help in the practical choice of approaches or tests for the prediction of the various forms of genotoxicity. The main subjects of this review concern molecular analysis of mutagenesis, detection of DNA damage, gene mutation, clastogenesis, aneuploidy, and germ cells. Each theme is preceded by a short overview summarizing the state of the art and the contributions of each author. Finally, special attention was given to the personal views of some leading toxicologists as to the battery of tests presently available or recommended.
