Book excerpt: Official Publishing: An Overview is an international survey and review of the role, organization, and principles of official publishing. More specifically, it examines the organization, development, and effectiveness, including the economics, of state publishing as a means of communication between government and public, together with its relationship to the wider field of official information and communication activities. It also makes a broad comparison of the organization of publishing in the United Nations and its main agencies as well as some non-UN international organizations, particularly the European Communities and the OECD. Comprised of 32 chapters, this book opens with an introduction to the scope and importance of official publishing, followed by a discussion on official publishing in various countries such as Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, and India as well as Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Norway, Britain, and the United States. Official publishing in international organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank, OECD, NATO, and the European Communities is also considered. Subsequent chapters focus on various aspects of official information, including growth, framework, machinery, objectivity, accessibility, finance and economics, and control. The book also describes information centers and specialist entrepreneurs before concluding with an assessment of future prospects for official publishing. This monograph will be a useful resource for librarians, bibliographers, researchers, students, and other major users of the end-products of official publishing.

Book Women s Work in Britain and France

Download or read book Women s Work in Britain and France written by Abigail Gregory and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-01-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's Work in Britain and France is a ground-breaking retheorization of what constitutes 'progress' in gender relations. The book shows that French women, although having more full-time and continuous careers and greater social policy support, retain as great a responsibility for unpaid domestic and caring work as their British counterparts. It replaces the conventional focus upon encouraging women's increased insertion into employment as the principal strategy for achieving progress in gender relations with a new focus on changing men's work patterns.

Book Twa Women Twa Rights in the Great Lakes Region of Africa

Download or read book Twa Women Twa Rights in the Great Lakes Region of Africa written by Dorothy Jackson and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2003-11-10 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twa, as an indigenous people in the Great Lakes region of Africa, are shunned by many other ethnic groups. If Twa communities as a whole suffer from discrimination, marginalization and extreme poverty, then Twa women suffer this and more. This situation has been exacerbated by violent conflict in the region. Dorothy Jackson has many years experience of working with the region’s Twa communities and Twa women. Twa women’s voices can be heard clearly in this report, calling for change and for recognition of their rights – as indigenous people and as women. Despite the day-to-day discrimination and poverty, Twa women are resourceful and resilient, as this report shows. Central to the issues facing Twa women, and their communities, is land. Twa have traditionally been dependent on their forests and land but today most Twa are landless. Their culture – and even their existence – is under threat. Added to this, the changes that are happening within Twa societies are overturning the relatively equal relationship between women and men. This report considers government policies and international human rights law that could be used by Twa organizations and support agencies in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. The report concludes with a set of recommendations aimed at these states’ governments and at development organizations.

Book Employment and Citizenship in Britain and France

Download or read book Employment and Citizenship in Britain and France written by John Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: One of the most significant features to emerge in the world of work during the past decade has been the change from long-term employment, often with one employer, to a pattern of short-term, flexible working arrangements involving short-term contracts, frequent spells of unemployment, rapid movement into and out of employment and greater labour mobility. This text examines the social and economic consequences of this employment flexibility. The book derives from the 2nd Anglo-French Conference on the Transferability of Social Policy held in 1998, which focused on the problems created by employment flexibility and the appropriate policy responses, it also presents commentaries on the consequences of flexibility in Britain and France. It brings together British and French perspectives on such policy questions as the impact on families and their ability to plan in an atmosphere of economic insecurity, the manner in which French and British welfare systems are adapting, the impact on citizens' rights, the need, in both countries, to make pension arrangements more adaptable, and the potential for a "European citizenship" approach to the problem.

Book Femmes twas et droits des Twas dans la r gion africaine des Grands Lacs

Download or read book Femmes twas et droits des Twas dans la r gion africaine des Grands Lacs written by Dorothy Jackson and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2003-11-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Social Justice and the World of Work

Download or read book Social Justice and the World of Work written by Brian Langille and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, leading international thinkers take up the demanding challenge to rethink our understanding of social justice at work and our means for achieving it – at a time when global forces are tearing the familiar fabric of our working lives and the laws regulating them. When fabric is torn we can see deeply into it, understand its structural weaknesses, and imagine alterations in the name of resilience and sustainability. Seizing that opportunity, the authoritative commentators examine the lessons revealed by the pandemic and other global shocks for our ideas about justice at work, and how to advance that cause in the world as we now find it. The chapters deliver critical re-assessments of our goals, explore our new challenges, and creatively re-imagine trajectories for progress on two global fronts - via international institutions and by a myriad of other transnational techniques. These forward-looking essays are in honour of Francis Maupain, whose international career and scholarly writing are inspiring models for those who, in a changing world, seize opportunities for creativity in the pursuit of global justice at work.
