Book Animality and Humanity in French Late Modern Representations of Black Femininity

Download or read book Animality and Humanity in French Late Modern Representations of Black Femininity written by Elodie Silberstein and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the evolution of the depictions of black femininity in French visual culture as a prism through which to understand the Global North’s destructive relationship with the natural world. Drawing on a broad spectrum of archives extending back to the late 18th century – paintings, fashion plates, prints, photographs, and films – this study traces the intricate ways a patriarchal imperialism and a global capitalism have paired black women with the realm of nature to justify the exploitation both of people and of ecosystems. These dehumanizing and speciesist strategies of subjugation have perpetuated interlocking patterns of social injustice and environmental depletion that constitute the most salient challenges facing humankind today. Through a novel approach that merges visual studies, critical race theory, and animal studies, this interdisciplinary investigation historicizes the evolution of the boundaries between human and non-human animals during the modern period. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual studies, critical race theory, colonial and post-colonial studies, animal studies, and French studies.

Book Louis Malle

  • Author : Christopher Beach
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2022-06-15

Download or read book Louis Malle written by Christopher Beach and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A filmmaker whose work exhibits a wide range of styles and approaches, Louis Malle (1932–1995) was the only French director of his generation to enjoy a significant career in both France and the United States. Although Malle began his career alongside members of the French New Wave like François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and Claude Chabrol, he never associated himself with that group. Malle is perhaps best known for his willingness to take on such difficult or controversial topics as suicide, incest, child prostitution, and collaboration with the Nazis during World War II. His filmography includes narrative films like Zazie dans le Métro, Murmur of the Heart, Atlantic City, My Dinner with Andre, and Au revoir les enfants, as well as several major documentaries. In the late 1970s, Malle moved to the United States, where he worked primarily outside of the Hollywood studio system. The films of his American period display his keen outsider’s eye, which allowed him to observe diverse aspects of American life in settings that ranged from turn-of-the-century New Orleans to present-day Atlantic City and the Texas Gulf Coast. Louis Malle: Interviews covers the entirety of Malle’s career and features seventeen interviews, the majority of which are translated into English here for the first time. As the collection demonstrates, Malle was an extremely intelligent and articulate filmmaker who thought deeply about his own choices as a director, the ideological implications of those choices, and the often-controversial themes treated in his films. The interviews address such topics as Malle’s approach to casting and directing actors, his attitude toward provocative subject matter and censorship, his understanding of the relationship between documentary and fiction film, and the differences between the film industries in France and the US. Malle also discusses his sometimes-challenging work with such actors as Brigitte Bardot, Pierre Blaise, and Brooke Shields, and sheds new light on the making of his films.

Book French Catholicism

Download or read book French Catholicism written by S. Tippett-Spirtou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-01-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents authoritative and comprehensive analysis of the role of the Catholic church in France over 50 years of social, political and theological change. The impact of social secularization, of the changing role of women, attitudes to sexuality, of dramatic political change - from Algeria, the 1960s, the Mitterand era and the rise of Le Pen - and of battles over education are presented in historical context. The church's responses to challenges to its authority, its teachings and structural resources are analysed. The conclusion asks 'Wither the Catholic Church?' in modern France.

Book A Self conscious Art

Download or read book A Self conscious Art written by Akane Kawakami and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Self-Conscious Art' deals with the formal complexities of Modiano's work, by reading 'against the grain' of his self-professed ingenuousness. A detailed examination of his narratives shows the deeply postmodern nature of his writing. Parodying precursors such as Proust or the nouveau romanciers, his narratives are built around a profound lack of faith in the ability of writing to retrieve the past through memory, and this failure is acknowledged in the discreet playfulness that characterises his novels.
