Elles vivent maintenant comme une minorité négligée et marginalisée, souvent dans des zones conflictuelles ou post-conflictuelles éloignées. Bien que les adultes et enfants Batwa de la région aient identifiée l’éducation comme leur plus importante priorité, une grande majorité a très peu de, si ce n’est aucune, chance d’aller à l’école. La pauvreté, la faim, et les longues distances qu’ils doivent souvent parcourir pour se rendre à l’école, empêchent les enfants d’accéder à ce Droit de l’Homme fondamental. L’identité Batwa est historiquement déformée dans les programmes scolaires de la région, et ceci continue de nos jours. Au Burundi, les enfants Batwa rapportent que les professeurs leurs disent que, parce qu’ils sont Batwa, « ils ne valent rien ». Pour les Batwa, l’accès à l’éducation signifie des changements au niveau le plus basique, c’est-à-dire pouvoir lire des panneaux et affiches publiques. Elle apporte l’autonomie et améliore le respect de soi ; elle offre la possibilité d’entreprendre des formations techniques ou d’accéder à l’emploi, tout ceci aiderait le peuple Batwa à combattre la pauvreté dans laquelle il vit. Le bien-être des minorités au sein d’un pays a des répercussions sur le bien-être du pays dans l’ensemble. Si l’exclusion sociale et politique des Batwa touche à sa fin, il est évident que les opportunités en matière d’éducation doivent considérablement s’améliorer à chaque niveau. Le rapport comporte une richesse de recherches de première main provenant du Burundi, de la république Démocratique du Congo, du Rwanda et de l’Ouganda qui montre clairement qu'une action plus positive est nécessaire de la part des gouvernements, des organisations de sociétés civiles et de la communauté internationale.

They now live as a neglected and marginalized minority, often in remote conflict and post-conflict areas. Although Batwa adults and children across the region have identified education as their most important priority, the vast majority have had little if any chance to go to school. Poverty and hunger, and the long distances they often have to travel to access schooling, prevent children from enjoying what is their fundamental human right. Batwa identity has been historically misrepresented in school curricula in the region, and this continues today. Batwa children in Burundi report being told by teachers that because they are Batwa, they are ‘worth nothing’. For Batwa, access to education means change at the most basic level, such as being able to read public signs and notices. It allows self-sufficiency and promotes self-esteem; it offers the potential to undertake training in technical skills or access to employment, all of which would help Batwa people combat the poverty they live in. The welfare of minorities within a country has repercussions for its welfare as a whole. If the social and political exclusion of the Batwa is to end, it is clear that their education opportunities must improve dramatically at every level. This report contains a wealth of first-hand research from Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda which clearly shows that more positive action is needed from governments, civil society organizations and the international community.
