Book excerpt: Scholarship on ethnicity in modern Latin America has traditionally understood the region’s various societies as fusions of people of European, indigenous, and/or African descent. These are often deployed as stable categories, with European or “white” as a monolith against which studies of indigeneity or blackness are set. The role of post-independence immigration from eastern and western Europe—as well as from Asia, Africa, and Latin-American countries—in constructing the national ethnic landscape remains understudied. The contributors of this volume focus their attention on Jewish, Arab, non-Latin European, Asian, and Latin American immigrants and their experiences in their “new” homes. Rejecting exceptionalist and homogenizing tendencies within immigration history, contributors advocate instead an approach that emphasizes the locally- and nationally-embedded nature of ethnic identification.

Book excerpt: One of the problems facing Europe is that the building of institutional Europe and top-down efforts to get Europeans to imagine their common identity do not necessarily result in political and cultural unity. Anthropologists have been slow to consider the difficulties presented by the expansion of the EU model and its implications for Europe in the 21st Century. Representing a new trend in European anthropology, this book examines how people adjust to their different experiences of the new Europe. The role of culture, religion, and ideology, as well as insiders' social and professional practices, are all shown to shed light on the cultural logic sustaining the institutions and policies of the European Union. On the one hand, the activities of the European institutions in Brussels illustrate how people of many different nationalities, languages and cultures can live and work together. On the other hand, the interests of many people at the local, regional and national levels are not the same as the Eurocrats'. Contributors explore the issues of unity and diversity in ‘Europe-building' through various European institutions, images, and programmes, and their effects on a variety of definitions of identity in such locales as France, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Belgium.

Far from the commonly held romantic view that hunter-gatherers continue to exist as isolated populations living a traditional lifestyle in harmony with the environment, contemporary hunter-gatherers – like many rural communities around the world - face a number of relatively new ecological and social challenges to which they are pressed to adapt. Contemporary hunter-gatherer societies are increasingly and rapidly being affected by Global Changes, related both to biophysical Earth systems (i.e., changes in climate, biodiversity and natural resources, and water availability), and to social systems (i.e. demographic transitions, sedentarisation, integration into the market economy, and all the socio-cultural change that these and other factors trigger). These rights are defined and agreed upon internationally, but must be enacted at regional, national, and local scales. Can the global movement to promote Indigenous Peoples’ rights change the experience of communities at the local level? Or are the concepts that it mobilizes, around rights and political tools, essentially a discourse circulating internationally, relatively disconnected from practical situations? Are the categories and processes associated with Indigenous Peoples simply an extension of colonial categories and processes, or do they challenge existing norms and structures? This collection draws together the works of anthropologists, political scientists, and legal scholars to address such questions. Examining the legal, historical, political, economic, and cultural dimensions of the Indigenous Peoples' rights movement, at global, regional, national, and local levels, the chapters present a series of case studies that reveal the complex power relations that inform the ongoing struggles of Indigenous Peoples to secure their human rights. Si les Twas dans leur ensemble souffrent de discrimination, de marginalisation et d’extrême pauvreté, combien plus les femmes twas en souffrent-elles. Cette situation a été récemment exacerbée par le violent conflit qui a secoué la région. Dorothy Jackson possède de nombreuses années d’expérience et de travail aux côtés des communautés twas de la région et des femmes twas en particulier. On devine clairement les voix des femmes twas dans ce rapport, qui plaident pour des changements et la reconnaissance de leurs droits – en tant qu’autochtones et en tant que femmes. Malgré la discrimination et la pauvreté qui sont leur lot quotidien, elles sont pleines d’énergie, d’idées et de courage, ce que ce rapport suffit à démontrer. La question foncière est aujourd’hui de premier ordre pour les femmes comme pour les communautés twas. Les Twas étaient traditionnellement dépendants des forêts et des territoires sur lesquelles ils vivaient. Or aujourd’hui, la plupart des Twas sont sans terre. Leur culture et leur existence même sont en danger. Qui plus est, les changements profonds qui affectent aujourd’hui leurs sociétés sont en train de remettre en question le statut traditionnel d’égalité entre hommes et femmes. Ce rapport présente les politiques gouvernementales et les instruments juridiques internationaux relatifs aux droits humains que les Twas et les organisations qui les soutiennent pourraient utiliser au Burundi, en Ouganda, en République démocratique du Congo et au Rwanda. En guise de conclusion, le rapport offre des recommandations aux gouvernements de ces Etats et aux organisations de développement.
