Book excerpt: La plupart des travaux sur le développement des connaissances temporelles étudie ces constructions indépendamment des outils culturels qui les rendent possibles. Cette recherche a pour objectif de montrer que le processus de repérage temporel repose sur l'utilisation de divers outils qui évoluent, se transforment au cours du développement de l'enfant. L'étude porte sur la construction du temps social en référence à l'appropriation de divers outils de localisation temporelle chez 200 enfants de 4 à 10 ans. La capacité à localiser des événements dans le temps est étudiée au cours d'un entretien et la capacité à ordonner des événements pour construire différents cadres temporels (quotidien, hebdomadaire, et annuel) est étudiée lors d'une tâche d'arrangements d'images. Les résultats montrent que les outils utilisés par l'enfant pour localiser et ordonner des événements dans le temps changent avec l'expérience scolaire : les enfants les plus jeunes ont recours à des localisations relatives ou scripts (des événements lui servent alors de moyens de repères) alors que les plus grands utilisent des localisations conventionnelles (les jours, les heures, les mois deviennent alors des outils de repérage). De plus, l'enfant utilise les outils conventionnels pour localiser des événements avant de les utiliser pour ordonner différents événements dans une même séquence temporelle. Ces outils fonctionnent tout d'abord comme des localisations isolées avant d'être intégrés dans un système de repérage. Différentes étapes développementales sont mises en évidence et confirment le rôle structurant et restructurant des outils psychologiques dans le développement cognitif

Book excerpt: L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier, chez les enfants de 3 à 8 ans, la mémoire à long terme des durées, dans 2 types de tâches d'estimation du temps: 1) bissection temporelle, qui relèverait plus d'une tâche de mémoire explicite, et 2) reproduction d'une durée apprise par imitation-copie, qui relèverait plus d'une tâche de mémoire implicite. En bissection temporelle, une tâche interférente ou un allongement de l'intervalle de rétention provoque un oubli des durées standard chez tous les enfants. Néanmoins, cet oubli est moins sévère à 3 qu'à 5 ans, et à 5 qu'à 8 ans. En revanche, avec un apprentissage implicite des durées, les enfants ont un meilleur maintien de celles-ci en mémoire à long terme. À 5 ans, ils se rappellent de la durée apprise par imitation après 6 mois, tandis qu'à 3 ans, ils montrent des signes d'oubli après 24 ou 48 heures. Ceci serait dû à un début d'explicitation des connaissances temporelles apprises par l'action chez les enfants de 5 ans.
