Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unite d'Habitation at Marseilles is a key building of the twentieth century, and a seminal work in Le Corbusier's oeuvre. A precursor of buildings in Nantes, Berlin, Briey-en-Foret and Firminy, it established, in built form, Le Corbusier's ideas of public housing that had existed only on paper for more than twenty-five years. David Jenkins argues that the Marseilles Unite stands out as a powerful and convincing testament of Le Corbusier's fundamental humanism and his faith in the principles of the Ville Radieuse and the Brutalist medium of rough cast concrete which in other, less able hands, have since been called into question.

Book excerpt: the Unité in Marseille (1945-1952) was a pioneering achievement at a time when social housing in the post WWII years posed an immense problem. Freed from restrictive regulations for the first time Le Corbusier was able to put into practice his concept of modern social housing. A milestone of modern architecture and subject of controversial debate, the Unité in Marseille continues to attract numerous visitors and students of architecture. This volume is the latest addition to Birkhäuser's series of guides to Le Corbusier's most acclaimed buildings, and includes an additional chapter on his Unités in Rezé-les-Nantes, Briey en Forêt, Firminy and Berlin. The author, a practising architect and well known le Corbusier specialist, lives in Marseille and teaches at the Ecole d'architecture de Marseille-Luminy.

Book excerpt: Whilst focused primarily on the Unite d'Habitation in Marseilles, built between 1945 and 1952, this guide also encompasses an overview of the four other unite blocks built by Le Corbusier in France and abroad. In many ways, it represents the culmination of Le Corbusier's research into housing - a period of studies and writings that lasted almost half a century. Over the fifty years of its existence, the Marseilles Unite has continually kindled intense debate and interest. It is now ranked among the world's greatest architectural works, proving - should proof still be required - Le Corbusier's belief that housing is an essential ingredient of architecture and vice versa.

Download or read book Le Corbusier written by Stanislaus von Moos and published by 010 Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in Germany in 1968, this first comprehensive and critical survey of Le Corbusier's life and work soon became the standard text on the architect and polymath. French, Spanish, English, Japanese and Korean editions followed, but the book has now been out of print for almost two decades. In the meantime, Le Corbusier's archives in Paris have become available for research, resulting in an avalanche of scholarship. Von Moos' critical take and the basic criteria by which the subject is organized and historicized remain surprisingly pertinent in the context of this recent jungle of Corbusier studies. This new, completely revised edition is based on the 1979 version published in English by the MIT Press but offers a substantially updated body of illustrations. Each of the seven chapters is supplemented by a critical survey of recent scholarship on the respective issues. An updated edition of this acclaimed book, an essential read for students of architecture and architectural history.

Book Towards a Public Space

Download or read book Towards a Public Space written by Marta Sequeira and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Le Corbusier is well-known for his architectural accomplishments, which have been extensively discussed in literature. Towards a Public Space instead offers a unique analysis of Le Corbusier’s contributions to urban planning. The public spaces in Le Corbusier’s plans are usually considered to break with the past and to have nothing whatsoever in common with the public spaces created before modernism. This view is fostered by both the innovative character of his proposals and by the proliferation in his manifestos of watchwords that mask any evocation of the past, like l’esprit nouveau ("new spirit") and l’architecture de demain ("architecture of tomorrow"). However, if we manage to rid ourselves of certain preconceived ideas, which underpin a somewhat less-than-objective idea of modernity, we find that Le Corbusier's public spaces not only didn't break with the historical past in any abrupt way but actually testified to the continuity of human creation over time. Aimed at academics and students in architecture, architectural history and urban planning, this book fills a gap in the systematic analysis of Le Corbusier’s city scale plans and, specifically, Corbusian public spaces following the Second World War.

Book Le Corbusier

Download or read book Le Corbusier written by Jacques Sbriglio and published by Actes Sud. This book was released on 2009 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More in love with the alluring properties of cement than he is with his girlfriend, Frunz’s overriding ambition is to become the next legendary architect. If only life was that simple. His father, known as Mr. Cement, is a builder in bed with the autocrats who run Yerevan, the capital of post-Soviet Armenia. As father and son team up to transform the city into a post-modern mecca of Trumpian high-rises, outraged citizens rise up in Revolution against them and Yerevan’s corrupt regime. Will Frunz and his father realize their architectural dreams or come crashing down to Earth in the chaos of the Revolution? Written by Viken Berberian with his signature originality and verve and drawn with audacious compositions, delirious colors, and a kinetic expressionistic technique by the acclaimed painter and illustrator Yann Kebbi, The Structure is Rotten, Comrade is a formally innovative and politically resonant work, by turns prescient, punchy, cautionary, and fearless.

Book excerpt: If there is one building by Le Corbusier that represents a synthesis of his basic concepts it is certainly the Unite d'habitation built in Marseille in 1946-52. This building is now very popular with the people who live in it. Le Corbusier used his architectural resources atmospherically and scenically to give the Unite d'habitation a succinct coherence that also forms the basis for individual lives within its rooms and spaces. Precise observation and description reveal the mechanisms of these effects.
