Book excerpt: Italy in the Middle Ages was unique among the countries of Europe in recreating, in a changed environment, the urban civilization of antiquity - the society, culture, and political formations of city-states. This book examines the origins and nature of this phenomenon from the fall of Rome to the eve of its consummation, the Italian Renaissance. The explanation is sought in Italy's singular `double existence' between two contrasted worlds - ancient and medieval. The ancient was characterised by the total predominance of the landed aristocracy in economy and society, enforced through a peculiar system of city states embracing town and country. The new medieval influences were marked by the separation of town, country and aristocracy, by the identification of towns with trade and a mercantile bourgeoisie, and by commercial and proto-industrial revolution. Italy shared in both worlds. It remained a land of cities and of an urbanized ruling class (except in the Norman South) and re-established territorial city states; but the staes were very different from those of antiquity, the city leaders in the commercial revolution, and Italy itself seen as a nation of shopkeepers, birthplace of capitalism. In this fascinating and ground-breaking study, Philip Jones traces in detail the tension and interaction between the two traditions, civic and patrician, mercantile and bourgeois, through all phases of Italian life to their culmination in two rival regimes of communes and despots.

With particular reference to The Book of Walls, an historical discourse of Islamic law whose primary subject is the wall, the book determines the meaning of a wall and then uses it to analyze the space of Fez. One of a growing number of studies to address space as a category of critical analysis, the book makes the following contributions to scholarship. Methodologically, it breaks with the tradition of viewing Islamic architecture as a well-defined object observed by a specialist at an aesthetically directed distance; rather, it inhabits the logic of this architecture by rethinking it discursively from within the culture that produced it. Hermeneutically, it sheds new light on one of North Africa's oldest medinas, and thereby illuminates a type of environment still common to much of the Arab-Muslim world. Empirically, it brings to the attention of mainstream scholarship a legal discourse and aesthetic that contributed to the form and longevity of this type of environment; and it exposes a preoccupation with walls and other limits in premodern urban Arab-Muslim culture, and a mythical paradigm informing the foundation narratives of a number of historic medinas. Presenting a fresh perspective for the understanding of Muslim urban society and thought, this innovative study will be of interest to students and researchers of Islamic studies, architecture and sociology.

Il progetto nasce da una serie di accordi bilaterali che dal 2015 l’Istituto di Studi sul Mediterraneo Antico e il Dipartimento Scienze Umane e Sociali, Patrimonio culturale del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche ha intrattenuto con il Ministero della Scienza, il Ministero della Cultura del Montenegro e l’Historical Institute dell’Università del Montenegro. Oggetto della ricerca è la città romana di Doclea e il suo territorio: fondata come municipio romano nel I sec. d.C. in una pianura circondata da colline e delimitata da tre corsi d’acqua, si trova a circa tre chilometri dall’attuale capitale del paese, Podgorica. Scavata soprattutto alla fine del XIX secolo e solo in parte nel corso del XX secolo, fu la seconda città importante per dimensioni della Dalmazia romana. Ancora oggi sono visibili un grande foro, terme, templi e case private, tre chiese di epoca medievale oltre a un imponente circuito murario. Alcuni discutibili interventi moderni, quali la costruzione di una ferrovia che negli anni ’40 ha tagliato a metà il sito archeologico e la mancanza di una vera politica di conservazione e valorizzazione, stanno mettendo a rischio l’integrità e la capacità di fruizione del sito, che rappresenta uno dei monumenti più importanti per l’identità culturale della nazione montenegrina. Dalle ricerche di archivio e bibliografiche alla ricognizione archeologica, fino all’applicazione di nuove tecnologie di indagine, il testo è il risultato di un dialogo interdisciplinare che ha lo scopo di conoscere e valorizzare il sito e il suo paesaggio. Dal 2018 l’ArcheoLab Italia Montenegro è divenuto Progetto di Grande Rilevanza del Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale con il titolo “Il Futuro del Passato: studio e valorizzazione dell’antica Doclea, Montenegro” (2018-2020).
